The idea is to encourage people to either take public transport or buy an EV, however with the sales of new cars at around 28% EVs and the current fleet of EVs on our roads at just 3% ULEZ has been introduced way, way, way too early.

It's ok, I'm going to use an escooter when ULEZ comes to my area, to avoid the charges and help reduce pollution and congestion...oh wait, they aren't legal and the government hasn't bothered to make them legal, even though this would help with the above. So is the government really concerned about pollution or is ULEZ just another way of taxing the people it's supposed to represent?

Hi Lee, The disparity in range estimation between your car (which reduced) and Jeff's (which increased) is because your range (the EV) is measured on power reserve in the battery, which is a reasonably accurate reflection of the actual power reserve. In an ICE, the estimated range is based on accumulated past driving performance, and is not very accurate: if previous driving performance used a lot of litres per mile (driving fast or in stop-start conditions) and current driving performance is more efficient using less litres per mile you can very often recover (increase) estimated range on the current tank of fuel - I see it all the time. So, in an ICE, if you did a lot of constant fast driving for 100 miles (chewing up a lot of fuel), your current range will be estimated on this. If you now do a further 100 miles at a constant 30 mph your range will be adjusted / increased to reflect this. This is simple engineering. Basically, the range estimate in an ICE is a poor guess, whilst in an EV it is a more accurate reflection of battery reserve, but it is still dependent on how you are now going to drive the car - even in the EV you will reduce the range as you increase the speed. That's why when EVs sense they are low on power they reduce your speed to extend the range. So, no mystery here!

Wbat gou said makes little sense. An ICE vehicle measures fuel left in tank and some estimate of future mpg based on both past mpg and current fuel flow rate. An EV essentially does the same based on current battery charge and an estimate of charge depletion based on past usage and present measurement of electrical current flow. The only reason for the range estimate to be better on one type of vehicle vs. the other simply has to do with the accuracies of the sensors employed and the sophistication of the equation used to calculate the remaining range.

I work on all types of cars EV's ICE etc, there is no doubt an electric motor has torque making the car faster on take off than any I.C.E.,Yes its a thrill and I like that too, but still you are limited by speed limits, speed camera's and other road users, so there are certain limitations, Once you are up to speed the only benefit is faster over taking, on a good long run that speed advantage goes in away as you sit charging while the ICE waves goodbye. I love Geoff and the deep thinking he does, he's a very intelligent and honest man, if only the people running the country were as smart and honest as Geoff, so thanks Lee for having Geoff on, that has to be the longest MacMaster I've ever watched and I loved it.

Not even that, it's ok for me to drive my classic V8 without a catalytic converter. No issue at all and ULEZ exempt. Because it disproportionately affects the fewest cars of those on the lowest incomes, on that basis alone, it's somewhat unfair.

When a container ship burns out of control for 2 weeks then this happens last March, "The cargo ship Felicity Ace carrying thousands of cars, has sunk due to the fire onboard which occurred in mid February. The ship carried a large amount of electric cars, and the burning lithium on board is thought to have made extinguishing efforts much worse".
@15bit62
@15bit62 Жыл бұрын
This is actually a lot of misinformation. Earlier this summer I talked with the guy in charge of dealing with fires on a long distance car ferry. He said, very bluntly, it doesn't matter what kind of car catches fire - they have no really effective way to extinguish it. They have zoned water sprays, and in principle some guys can go onto the car deck with hoses. In practice he told me that they will just use the water sprays to suppress the fire long enough to get everyone off the boat and then let it burn out. The one fire he has seen was a diesel generator that overheated, and the fire spread to some cars and that was it. The ship was scrapped.

EV's are the biggest scam in motoring history. Also, if anyone thought that they would get cheap motoring in an EV are living in cloud cuckoo land. Some people have bought EV's on the back of this and I'll bet they regret that now that the cost of electricity has risen so much and of course they are to be taxed before long. In terms of restrictions, it is definatey to get us off the roads and limit our freedom of movement. I have no doubt about that. I live in Wales and the 20mph restrictions are absurd. I was out in the early hours recently and did 20 in a restricted zone. No-one about, no cars and it was absolutely ridiculous. But no-one is taking any notice of it anyway and a recent report into the effects of the 20 zones found that although there was a slight drop in speeds initially, that has dropped off now so goes to show that it is being ignored.But we have the power Lee. We must be careful who we vote for.

As a Dane I have lately seen the wreck (pictures) of a burned out EV, I think a Tesla? And it wasn't much of a problem, as it hardly left anything to be disposed of, but a black spot on the ground, maybe to be restored for fire damage at a time? Really a clean vehicle in every way! And an electric fire can't be stopped, so the one "Danish Rescue Service (Falck)" has lately bought 4 iron boxes for EVs to be pushed into, while burning out, without being a hazard to the surroundings as long as it may last. I do hope of course, that I will never be on a ferry with a burning EV (They are not able to extinguish a fire in an EV, even by cutting of the supply of oxygen on one of the decks)? Luckily the one major Ferry Operator in Denmark are soon to be replaced with a tunnel for cars and trains for 18 km, below the water (Hopefully an EV won't start to burn during the passing of that?). Finn. Denmark 🤨

With regards to Geoff's comments about estate cars I preferred MPV. I bought one of the first Renault Espace in the country. I ordered one at the end of 1985 and took delivery on a D Plate in 1986. I finally got rid of it 16 years later after covering 336,000 miles of comparatively trouble free motoring. Replaced it with a late Phase 3 model which was a bit of a nightmare because it was a mix with lots of Phase IV parts fitted instead of Phase III, so trying to get parts was very hit or miss. My last one was the 3.0 litre V6 Grand Espace. If I get the chance I would love to get a good low mileage one. I believe that Renault still make the Espace but only in lhd but there are 4 different models made in India, two under the Dacia name.

I thought the NEC Birmingham had its own train station! It must have a car park for other cars and cars that don’t need charging! Also, trying to encourage us to use public transport! Needed a bit more on the NEC. Great video, your mate has good delivery.

I live in Walsall, not far from the town center, on the 13th the floor of a block of flats, in a complex of five blocks of flats in it, with an est 350 flats in them, with 123 parking spaces over three estate car parks. Locally, I know of only two, yes TWO, public charging points for EV's, them being at a Morrisons supermarket. So were you to consider the number of cars potentially in the flats. plus other local people needing to charge, there would be a system collapse, and I believe it could possibly lead to public disorder. This Sunday, I will be travelling to Hull on a day trip. At the moment my car, a hybrid, has 244 miles available, but I will just pop two mins down the road to my local garage, spend about another two minutes and put £30 in the tank, and that will probably give me a full tank, from which I will get over 500 miles. I agree that this EV drive is a form of traffic and social control, again from which i can see more public disorder.

A fast hybrid would give you instant talk as the battery kicks in first. I have a hybrid and from a stop the battery moves the car off and power is instant. Hopefully the future is efuels and hybrid or hydrogen. It's the lithium that's the issue.

I understand the pros and cons of EV, sadly there has never been any joined up thinking when it comes to what is actually required to be in place. Firstly, our roads have been left to fall into ruin. There are potholes all over the place. EVs are vulnerable...UNDERNEATH. So, maybe a heavy investment in keeping the roads useable would have been a good start. But, that doesn't bring money in. Politicians only want things that bring money in for themselves, friends and family, (in my opinion.) One of the benefits that EV drivers will tell you is how cheap per mile their journey is. But, I have always worked on the fact that you will keep a vehicle for a number of years, so divide the purchase price, running costs (service, tax, insurance etc) by say 10 years. That will give you the real costs per mile (plus add the 20K needed to replace the battery pack). I usually buy a car at about 3 years old. But would NEVER buy an EV. Why, because I want car that I can maintain and keep on the road for a reasonable rate each year, I don't want to be waiting for the 20K battery change to suddenly hit me. Our PM is fine, 5M a year would make me confident in splashing out on a new EV...but need a 7 seater...and that's another problem. Keep up the good work, great to see you link with Geoff as he is sound as a pound too.

A question for all EV owners; would you consider sitting directly above a bundle of sticks of gelignite when you drove your vehicle along public roads? Well, if you don't already know that is the scenario beneath the floor of your lovely EV. Beneath the carpeting, thebseating of these EVs, there is a floor void. Bolted within this void or space is a vast quantity of individual battery cells neatly tucked away, which is referred to as the battery pack. Should the occasion arise that a short-circuit should occur within this battery pack - leading to full-blown fire - no fire brigade or firefighter can so much as put such a fire out. This by reason there is no way of externally gaining access to this battery pack, not without the entire vehicle being lifted off the deck, that is. Because of the tremendous heat generated by such a shorted-out battery pack (this being in the order of some two thousand plus degrees Celsius). First, to ignite will be the floor carpeting this then followed by the seating; all of which are positioned directly above the inferno below being generated by the battery pack. This is the main reason firefighters find themselves helpless to assist with this sort of vehicle fire, plus the fact water cannot be under any cirrmstances be used on any electrical fires. I trust the no individual should find themselves trapped in such a given situation, I shall hold on to my twenty year old car or nag untill it or I go first.

I suggest you consider what would happen if you threw a lit match into your fuel tank 😂 What a load of hysterical baloney! You know, too, that firefighters have to deal with electrical fires all the time? I've been trained which fire extinguisher to use on electrical fires. Every care home, every hospital, every workplace has CO², foam and water extinguishers. You talk as though no one had ever encountered a fire in electrical equipment before EVs 😂

Sadly EV batteries can burn, not just as common electrical fires. The real problem of Lithium Ion battery fires is they can not be extinguished like pure Electrical fires. The battery burns feeding it own oxygen. Conventional fire extinguishing smothers fire by water, foam, dry powder depending on fire type, EV battery fires CAN NOT extinguish by those methods as they feed fire own released oxygen. Presently an EV fire must burn out on its own producing very hazardous fumes, as battery after battery of the hundreds in a pack light up under heat of other burning cells. A EV can burn for over a day, with fire fighters at best keeping surroundings from catching fire. Many EV vehicles have destroyed road surfaces, other near cars, buildings. Another problem is EV cars lightup fires just standing not even while driven. Most ICE car fires are during driving and in accident circumstances, and able to be extinguished by existing fire services, and diesels DO NOT EXPLODE OUTWARDS like petrol.

Just a point Lee. You say that if you charge your EV up at home it’s much cheaper. However what your not considering is on the mileage that you must do that £12 a full charge is likely to be per day so that’s £60 a week. I’d put money on any petrol/diesel car would still be going the following week so it isn’t cheaper to run an EV.
@theoneandyt
@theoneandyt Жыл бұрын
Terry it's £s per mile though... So think of it as £12 gets you approximately 300 miles (just going from what was quoted). It doesn't really matter how far you drive. You won't get that with petrol/diesel.
