Great review. I knew most, but not, all of these. The idea of holding a key then pressing the other is what I needed to hear. When using 3 keys simultaneously, I always try to hit all at the same time. Now I can relax. Thanks Dylan. As to the power tip, I recently learned that you can use the mouse to directly select an app rather than having to cycle through the list.
@TheMacWhisperer
@TheMacWhisperer 6 ай бұрын
Yeah, learning NOT to try and hit them all together is a BIG lesson. And I like the mouse trick also... but I figured for the average user 3 levels of the Power Tip was plenty. It has also been mentioned that you can quit apps right from the App Switcher (which I also use frequently). Thanks for watching! I love it when POWER USERS check out my videos!!!

Thanks. Power tip level 4 - command - SHIFT - tab will select the next app on the overlay going right to left. Same with command - SHIFT - tilde will cycle through the open windows in the opposite direction. Both are helpful if you overshoot where you want to go, you can just back up instead of going through them all again.

Hi Dylan, I have to admit I have a huge pile in Notes and in Photos and I would love to clean it up. In the notes, I have x-1000 thoughts and essays or screenshots which I would like to tidy up, sort - but also delete unnecessary stuff. What is the best way to do this? 2. over the last 12 years I have stored well over 250,000 photos on my Apple iCloud (6TB)!!!! And this is simply getting too expensive. How can I download all the photos efficiently - even over a weekend or two - and store them on an external SSD? So keep collecting them locally...? Thank you for your lessons - they are absolutely great and as a Swiss, not knowing perfect English, I very much appreciate your top class and clear explanations! (You became my best English teacher!!!) ;-). Simply fantastic!!

Yes, the Yellow (Minimize) button is frequently used to get things out of the way because most people don't know how to manage their windows properly... The Cmd+Tab sequence will save a billion hours a day.

⌘ + works differently in different apps. Which app are you currently in? If you select something in Notes and use ⌘ +, it'll make things bigger or smaller. But if you are in Mail or Safari and use ⌘ +, it will increase the entire screen.

Thanks for the review; didn't know that the [cmd+N] and [cmd + ~] were global keyboard commans - I was a little confused on [cmd + ~] vs [cmd + `] ... so I had a brief conversation with OpenAI and this was their response... On a Mac keyboard: Cmd + ~ : This shortcut triggers the Spotlight search [⌘ + Space bar according to [2]. The tilde (~) key is located next to the number 1 key. **Cmd + ** : This shortcut invokes the “Show Previous Window” function [2]. The backtick key (), also called the grave accent key, is located above the Tab key on your keyboard.
@TheMacWhisperer
@TheMacWhisperer 4 ай бұрын
Glad the review helped! 😊 It’s easy to get confused with the tilde (~) and backtick () shortcuts. On a Mac, **Cmd + ~** is used to switch between open windows of the same app, while **Cmd + ** (the backtick) is for cycling through apps. If you’re into shortcuts, we cover a lot of them during our live broadcasts-join us sometime and bring any questions you have! 😊

A propos “instead of running through all windows again and close them individually...”. Is there a hot key to close all the apps together so that the Mac shuts down? Thank you! Rolf
@TheMacWhisperer

Sure, go to the Apple menu in the upper left-hand corner and click shut down or restart. It will close everything for you. Unless you leave the box check that says open windows back up when you restart… But don’t do that.

Is there an equivalent key on the iPad keyboard for the command key?
@cifrancgx
@cifrancgx Ай бұрын
If you are just using an iPad by itself (and not an accessory keyboard like a Magic Keyboard) there is no Command Key. You don't need one on the iPad because the iPad uses a touch interface. So if you want to cut, copy, paste text for example, you just double tap the first word of the text you want and drag to highlight the text, and when you release your finger from the screen you will get a menu with cut, copy, paste and other options. Also, when you select text from the screen on the top left of the iPad's virtual keyboard you will see icons for cut, copy and paste that you can also use. If you were to buy the Apple Magic keyboard those do have the Command, Option, Ctrl and Globe modifier keys which allows you to cut copy and paste just like on a Mac.

All of this is true and completely accurate. ✅ Thank you for posting it! 😊 If you are using a keyboard case or even a Bluetooth keyboard, you can utilize the command key on the iPad. However, you cannot use the command key on the iPad natively if you don't have a keyboard. ⌨️

I don't use Chrome; I use Safari. However, I believe the same (or similar) shortcuts work on Chrome. I avoid Chrome unless absolutely necessary. 🚫💻

I know this will sound pedantic, but ... key codes are numerical representations of the pressed key used by the OS to determine what you typed and in scripts to send key presses to the OS. For example, 49 is the space key and 39 is the double quote. Better terms are keyboard shortcuts (Apple's preferred term), key combo, combinations, hotkey, and similar. This might be important for some because any search for more shortcuts using "keycodes" may not yield desired results. Just sayin'.

Is there a keyboard shortcut equivalent to the Windows V in Windows to bring up all the items in my clipboard?
@TheMacWhisperer

So, unfortunately, on Mac the clipboard only holds one item at a time. I use a third-party app called Paste to give it greater functionality... but it's not built-in on the Mac.

I am curious why you called them “key codes” in the video, but used the more common term “shortcuts” is in the video title.
@TheMacWhisperer
@TheMacWhisperer 6 ай бұрын
Yeah, that was a difficult choice. Shortcuts mean many different things, from Siri Shortcuts to text shortcuts and more. Keycodes only mean one thing, key combinations. I didn't want to use both in the video, so I rolled the dice and decided to use the proper term keycodes, but then hedged my bet, adding the word shortcuts to the title. I went back and forth on that a lot. I may have made the wrong choice, and may adjust the thumbnail to use the other name to see if it improves the video's traction. Thanks for asking, great question!

Your pneumonic for copy and paste, seriously, dude. Cmnd + C = Copy/Cmnd + V = Paste ……it’s next to C. Jesus.That’s much easier than trying to remember some horse shit about a dog.
@TheMacWhisperer
@TheMacWhisperer 27 күн бұрын
Different strokes for different folks. 🤷‍♂️ The shock to me is how few people recognize that Z, X, C, and V are all right next to each other. 😲 They're constantly struggling to remember which one means what... mostly because they expect paste to be Command P, which it isn't. It's great that you have an easy way to remember it, but the reality is that many people forget that V is paste. Knowing that it is just like a caret that you use to append something you've written by hand has helped many of them. It's great that you don't need that... but some people do.
@MullyShaves
@MullyShaves 27 күн бұрын
@@TheMacWhisperer Apologies for being so rude in my comment. Just that the dog thing confused me more than just remembering that V is next to C. hahaha!!
