Today we are trying some common British foods - with help from suggestions by you. :) We previously tried beans on toast, but when we did we got a lot of suggestions of how to make beans on toast better, so we are going to try some of those suggestions as well as some other foods we picked up at our local British store.
Every week we share unique and geeky places from all around the world - make sure you check out the rest of our videos and subscribe. Please leave us a comment to let us know where you’d like to see a video from next!

re: baked beans. If you fry them in a pan (very little fat is needed, but be careful to use a low heat and keep it moving so it doesn't dry and burn), then the sauce gets a lot thicker and you can find it works better that way, because a lot of the time the tomato sauce makes other things squidgy and negates the texture of those foods (e.g. crunchy toast). Also works well as extra ballast and flavour with potato fries (thicker sauce helps you combine the two) or with mashed/boiled potatoes with sausages or bacon or gamon ham, etc. Try using the phrase knife and fork, because "forkanknife" can sound rude...

Totally different taste hot & cold. You must remember the myth of English food being bad come from American troops in England during World War 2 when we had rationing and food had to be really basic and pretty flavourless.

From what we can tell a large majority of the UK foods taste better than ours. That myth is busted as for as we're concerned.
@leea8706
@leea8706 3 жыл бұрын
Yes this is correct! British families were under extreme rationing and had to put together weird and wonderful combinations just so they could eat. Also, because we couldn’t import spices during that time the food was pretty bland. The families still invited the GIs for dinner, and shared what little they had. GIs who returned to America were full of stories about how bad British food was, because it was at the time, and the stereotype stuck. The nation’s favourite food according to most polls is curry, so we’re definitely not afraid of food that’s full of flavour, plus we invented loads of our own curries that are served in Indian restaurants around the world. On the topic of stereotypes, the one about us having bad teeth is weird too, especially as the U.K. and Germany are joint first place for having the healthiest teeth in the world. I think the stereotype comes from the fact we care more about health than whiteness and straightness (although that’s changing a bit, and we’re more likely to get braces etc now).
@G1NZOU
@G1NZOU 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, barely any spices cause seaborne food shipments needed essentials rather than costly spices. We grew vegetables and meat and sugar was always guaranteed to be available but just in limited quantities, so the meals were very healthy and filling, but sometimes rather bland due to the lack of seasonings and exotic ingredients. Nowadays curry is our most popular dish and I find British candy to be tastier than US candy that tends to just taste of corn syrup and not of actual chocolate or fruit like British candy.

All Ginsters stuff are disgusting and over-priced. I've never really been to Cornwall but there's a Pasty bakery in Chichester (my grandmother used to live there) that did all sorts of amazing pasties. I don't even know what Ginsters are trying to emulate half the time.

I remember going to Wadebridge a few years back and while consuming some cider at the local pub I saw a massive queue outside the local bakery. I asked the barman - why was there such a big queue and he said it was because of their pasties. Needless to say I joined that queue and was rewarded with one of the greatest pasties ever. To even mention a Ginsters pasty in the same breath is a travesty.

The sugar in baked beans has been gradually reduced over the years to make them healthier. Beans on toast is such a normal thing that I’m amazed it isn’t a thing everywhere. I ate it a lot as a student when I was on a really tight budget and I remember as a child it used to appear more often on my plate when it got close to payday and mum was running low on housekeeping money.

I'm a belgian who moved to the UK and one of the big reasons a lot of Belgians think english food is terrible is the presence of beans (though obviously not the only reason) XD I personally do not know a single belgian person that actually LIKES baked beans in tomato sauce. @@Stephneechan It's probably an acquired taste. Children seem to like them and then it becomes a comfort food later on in life. Personally, I find them a bit too sweet but a few drops of Tobasco sauce or similar makes them acceptable once in a while, especially if you dress them up a bit as they did here. I don't like to rubbish other people's food. There's food I like and food I don't like from any cuisine.

@@TheMagicGeekdom Well Ginsters are the ones that are sold in most fish and chip shops, along with "Pukka Pies", but really the best pies are those that you get in sit-down cafes here, which you would call a "diner". Just a working man's place to eat. The other alternative are the pie's in the famous London "Pie and Mash" shops. You should also try a proper Cornish pasty from Mevagissy in Cornwall. They were originally made by wives for tin miner's (like in Poldark), with a "wall" inside the pasty. One side had meat, turnips, potatoes, and carrots in, and the other side had jam in. ☺️

A traditional Cornish Pasty is made of beef and vegetables in one end and a pudding, apple and custard for example in the other; you hold it by the thick crust around the edge, this was because when mining tin your hands are contaminated with arsenic and if you eat the thick pastry you will slowly poison yourself and eventually kick the bucket.

@@TheMagicGeekdom A reasonable way to describe a Cornish pasty to someone whos never had a real one is to make a "meat and two veg dinner" (beef, potato and swede in this case) in the normal manner, then put it on a pastry base (not sure what kind of pasty but NOT flaky), fold it over and bake it. You shouldn't add any sweeteners of any kind and no cheese. It won't be a real Cornish pasty but its still closer than a Ginsters.

@@TheMagicGeekdom The Yorkshire Pudding (which is basically egg, flour and fat) is an accompaniment to roast beef. Originally it would be served, with gravy, before the meat and the rest of the meal so that people would fill up on the Yorkshire pudding and gravy, so wouldn't binge on the more expensive meat part of the meal. It's a real working man/woman's food, and is really, really good. I never get it right. It always collapses in the middle. Never mind, I'll keep trying (even when collapsed it still tastes good...)

Steak and kidney is most definitely the animal kidney. Usually the kidney is chopped into small pieces and mixed in with the chopped up steak. Most butchers sell raw steak and kidney. Kidney and liver are both popular types of offal. “Devilled” kidneys used to be a popular breakfast dish, but not so much these days. They are basically fried and seasoned with salt and pepper. Liver and onion served with mashed potatoes is very good. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! I know Americans are a bit dubious about offal. I understand that haggis cannot be imported into the states.

However, this does not take away from the quality of food, IMO. There may be smaller local family chain`s in certain parts of the U.K. also.

Really enjoyed your review guys! Thank you. Ginsters is a decent brand HOWEVER! If you're over in the UK go to a 'traditional bakery' shop and try their own food, you'll love it. Suggestions: Food in the UK is quite regional, so to get the best of British I'd suggest trying local food. Cornwall cornish pasties are the best, there's nothing pre-prepared that comes close, in my opinion. You'll definitely love our British Pub food, it's usually local food prepared and cooked on site by cooks that are passionate (chef's are well. . . . too chefy, great for posh nosh (high class food), but if you want a taste of Britain, you need cook's food, passionate, local and made with love). Hope you manage to visit guys! Kind Regards from Mold, North Wales UK 🧡

I ate it ever Monday tea time. see how you go. on a Sunday save some of your mashed potatoes back and put it in the fridge. a day in the week take the potato out and fry till a golden crust appears. you don't need to fry it with oil, just dry fry them. using buttered toast spread the fried potato onto the toast. not thick just normal about 2mm. sprinkle with salt and its good to go. great with ketchup. enjoy

The part about the disposable pastry handle is because what they were mining in Cornwall was tin, and because they were handling the tin ore and did not have adequate washing facilities down there in the mine they needed that extra pastry handle so that they could eat everything else on the pasty and not be in any danger of eating the toxic ore dust.

With beans, try dropping chopped garlic into olive oil, add chopped bacon. Then simmer until bacons cooked abit, and add the beans. Then simmer on low heat about 20mins and stir often. The texture will thicken alot and will stick unless your careful. Its awesome with a bbq, but would work on toast too.

He recommended cheese and onion pasties over corned beef pasties?! I mean they’re ok but if you want really good go for the corned beef pasties. When it comes to toast beans and cheese yes! But give cheese and Worcester (careful how you pronounce that) sauce on toast. Amazing. Add the sauce at the same time as the cheese, stick under the grill until the cheese melts, beautiful.

Here in the UK if you're right handed the fork pretty much always stays in the left hand. Also a traditional Cornish pasty is filled with beef, diced potato and swede (also known as yellow turnip) and as for your Baked beans tasting throw in some sausages black pudding (optional) and a good strong cup of tea with your toast, eggs and bacon and you would have had yourselves a full English breakfast.

The kidney in steak and kidney pies is actual kidney from a cow/pig/lamb. Other offal/entrails we sometimes eat are lamb's/pig's hearts, black pudding which is a sausage made mainly from pig blood, and of course haggis, which involves pig's lungs and stomach lining. All taste amazing when cooked and made right.
