You hit the nail on the head, Toby will never beat a home made roast or even a good pub roast, but when you take into account the price, the amount of food you can get, the fact there's almost every possible side for you to pick and choose and how much easier it is than making one yourself, that's when Toby really shines.

Sunday roast every week. Bubble and squeak with a slice of meat on monday. Left overs with mash Tuesday. Meat stewed up with veg Wednesday. Soup Thursday. Fish and chips Friday. Maybe sausage and mash Saturday. Edit. This was the routine in the 1950's, not everyone could afford to waste food. My nan grew her own veg so the food budget was carefully managed. No freezer or refrigerator and tinned goods were a luxury. The Sunday roast was the main meal of the week with a big piece of Yorkshire pudding so that you didn't eat too much meat. We would have the rest of the pudding the next day, cold with marmalade on.

American ex-pat here, i have lived in the UK for 8 years now and can help! I worked as a cook in a pub and you can make perfect roast potatoes without goose fat or beef drippings, its just a LOT of oil, and dry, par-cooked potatoes. a hot oven, an occasional toss, and the time to let them really crisp up. The stuffing here is VERY different than the Stove-top stuff, a bit drier, denser and often has sausage meat in it. Its amusing to see and hear Americans react to the food here, now that i have become very accustomed to it. I almost wish you had someone very British with you on these excursions to say the things we are all yelling at the screen that you can't hear!

Way down here in the South West, its like a whole different country, and many chains never made it down this far, so i haven't seen a Toby in decades! They were ubiquitous for me growing up in the Midlands though, along with Wimpys and Harvester with its epic salad bar. Pretty sure the Wimpys and Harvesters are all long gone, but i am so glad Toby's are still a thing and im glad you enjoyed your meal

Macaroni and cheese is a new one on me for the Toby menu. I don't think I'll be adding it to my plate just yet. 😂. You definitely need to try the breakfast at the Toby. Go there when they first open and try and sit as near to the hot plates as possible so you see when the chef brings out all the fresh stuff.

The thing that Americans get wrong with our Sunday roast is that they assume we have a roast with all the trimmings. In our house we have one type of meat with potatoes and two veg. My mum has her Yorkshire puddings as well, plus she has the cold ones with jam! 😉💖

Toby Carvery is my definite favourite place. I order the children’s veg dinner . Love the stuffing. Carrots are usually soily and I have sometimes had sliced potatoes with what might’ve been in garlic butter

Toby's is when you're craving a piled plate of roast stuffs but can't be arsed making one yourself. But if you can find a half decent home cook willing to have you over for a roast, it'll be better. Or there are better carvery options which aren't chains - but often they don't offer it every week and you'll struggle to get a sitting without booking.

Britons have been eating roast dinners since the reign of King Henry VII, 1457 -1509. The iconic Yeoman of the Guards, nicknamed “beefeaters”, were so called because of their love of eating roast beef. The French also call us Roast Beef and we call them frogs because they love to eat frogs with garlic. I know what I’d rather be eating. The Sunday Roast is an intrinsic part of our culture.

The Beef to me is normally the best. Mother used to have a roast every Sunday. The meat was so tender and oozing with juices. Added with really tasty gravy made from the juices.
