As a Steve player i agree with everything except the tier placement. I fully agree with that steve's guard break is completely unessesary. it could be removed imo. Altough in my opinion he's missing alot of important tools to be considered to be as strong as the other top tier chars like jin and dj for example. in T7 it's so important to be able launch punish, since combos do so much damage. also he doesn't have a perfect throw game like jin and no fast hopkick. and not to mention an unseeable launching low. A correction on Steve's lows (or possibly clarification) - d/b+2 became -12 (down from -15) on the release of Tekken 7 (not season 2), trading off its guaranteed knockdown for a CH only knockdown. The same occurred for ALB d+2. I agree with you on that move, it's too generous, -14 or -13 would have been a fairer trade for losing the knockdown. PAB d+2 has been a CH launcher since at least Tekken 6, if not earlier. The difference is that before T7 release (not season 2) it was always a FUFA launcher, making it inconsistent on non-big characters. It's now a FUFT launcher making it incredibly consistent on everyone. Additionally, PAB d+2 was better frame wise in T6, being only -10 on block. In TTT2 it was changed to -12, where it has remained ever since. Both moves are in the reaction time zone, which isn't terribly great, but obviously online or against someone who's sleeping, the story can change. The biggest problem with his low game as of S2 is that he lacks a genuinely scary low that makes you want to duck on a read in the open. In older Tekken games, that move was d/b+3,2 but with T7's new backwalk system, its efficacy is severely reduced in open ground. S3's trailer appeared to be giving Steve a brand new low that looks vaguely similar to his long run 1, we will see if that fills the gap of scary low. If it does, then I think Steve will very firmly be in the "Too good" tier.

Steve is an example of a high skill floor + high skill ceiling character, IMO. His toolkit is enormous, but coming fresh into Tekken and choosing Steve is a nightmare. You'll go online and get launched all day by hop kicks, standing launchers, hell sweeps, and wonder "what am I doing playing this character when I can just play Katarina, Claudio, Josie, King, or just about any other instead?". Trading kicks for evasive stances sounds cool as heck, until you eat demoman / magic 4 / junkyard /snake edge #3000, and get punished seemingly every time you use weave or sway. This kind of experience will probably continue well into yellow ranks, when you start to develop some of that "instinct" that TMM also mentions. Even when you get there and start to understand Steve's poke + CH game, using stances and DCK cancels require trail and error upon trail and error, as any string spamming Nina or unga Asuka brainlets have frontal cortices developed enough to react to an EXT DCK, and much like sway+2, you do it more for style points and to break the confidence of your opponent and contribute to their self-hatred and low self-esteem for letting it happen. Steve, contrary to popular belief, cannot be carried to Tekken God Prime with b+1, and in order to reach some respectable ranks, you gotta get intimate with just about 90% of his 130-ish movelist, the numerous mix-ups, the execution barrier, and practice the same fundamentals as everyone else. The reason people moan about Steve, is because he's an unorthodox character that demands you to learn how to counter certain mechanics of his, just like we all have to with blocking snake edge + WS punish at some point. The difference here is that snake edges are the same across many characters, but Steve is Steve, and imagine focusing all the frustration you have ever had towards snake edges onto one character. It's the same reason I disliked King, as the moment his chain throw begins, I'm putting my faith in lady luck that my button mashing will break me free before the third, as I (to this day) haven't put in the effort to learn how to counter it. With that said, Steve *is* a strong character and does not need buffs. When we enter pro levels, like Knee, Nobi, etc, he's a no-brainer pick; nobody is gonna be surprised that you picked Steve in a tournament. Most of us are not pros however, and the reason you get messed up by Steve is not because he's overpowered, it's because the Steve you fought played better than you did for those rounds. (I'd say the sonic fang rage drive is the closest thing he has to something being broken or overpowered. That move has saved me more times than I can count)

Also I know db3,2 is only good at the wall, but Steve is so good at pushing people there that it becomes a factor more often or not. he basically said steve has pros and cons. then the pros he complains about like guard break doesn't even come close to being abused in top level play. what about mid tier play? well steve is hardly considered an annoying/difficult character to play against there. in fact, i've never felt that steve was cheaply overpowered character. and why didn't he mention that steve is a known difficult character for comebacks? the way he said steve could just rush u down makes it sound like steve is both a defensive and offensive fortress. and steve also isn't a top tier character with endless 50/50 vortex like kazuya. you won't get clipped by flickers if you wait it out, and u can beat his mid homing since it's slow. kazuya can counter hit steve's mid as well. imo, steve is a very reasonable top tier character with tricky execution and complex game plan. therefore, if you aren't calling your biased characters OP, then don't pick on steve. also, many characters look like they will be buffed in season 3. steve is fine as he is right now. why are u asking to only give steve a useless new move? that sounds like you are asking for an imbalance, which then would need to be patched when everyone has new useful moves and steve suffered cause u asked for it.

Armorkings b1 is better than steves. Better range, it is safe and it is also faster at 12frames. The combo is not 100reliable always, but with some practise you will land it almost all the time. The move also has mid extension that sets up giant swing on hit and knocks down on counter hit to a guaranteed shoulder.
@MaskedGuyCh5 жыл бұрын
Steve's b1 is extremely safe at -1 with cancel, even on whiff it's hard to punish.

Steve is one of the toughest characters to play. 3 different stances. He also lacks kicks which makes him easier to read and reduce his range. Theres a reason why not many people play steve. I'd like to see you try and beat good players while u are steve and theyre playing as law, hwoarang, Lilly or anybody else but steve. Ur obsession with hatred for Steve has u blinded.
@dantemeriere58904 жыл бұрын
Law is also hard to play, particularly in high level. Hwoarang is also extremely hard to play and has more stances than Steve, being as complex if not more complex to play while actually being weaker. Lili is simply weak and doesn't even make sense in that comparison. Unless you are comparing Tekken to 3 bar online Tekken, that really doesn't make much sense.
