I think it's because if you do a straight cut on the tip it will have a natural curve and leave the silicon with a better consistent finish as apposed to having bulges running it back the normal way. When running the normal way you cut the tip at an angle which this video shows after tip 2. Tip 2 can cause you to judder on wood or rough surfaces, he used this method on smooth tiles which wouldn't judder and provides a better finish with a straight cut tip being used. Hope this answered your question 👍🏻

Actually if you look at the tip it is properly angled in no 5 therefore there is no need to compensate for wrong cut or hole too big. Which is the point of the lighter trick too, but if no flamage is to be had, then you can still fall back to no 2. Especially if someone else cut the tip because that’s the way they’ve always done it!!! Would have saved me a lot of rework

quick important message for all of you out there DO NOT USE A HEAT GUN ON YOUR TILES,BATH OR SHOWER ! if you go this far I'll tell you why. Tiles crack with heat differentials, adhesive on tiles de-bonds(have fun re-tiling), cast iron baths/ trays crack, fibreglass baths / trays deform, enamel cracks, epoxy cracks . DO NOT USE HEAT TO REMOVE SILICONE

First of all the reason you get uneven bead is you’re using the cheapest caulk gun you can buy. Secondly only putting down dotted lines to make a smooth bead is wrong because when you do that you create air bubbles which will make the silicone fail faster. How do I know? I’m a professional caulker with 30+ years experience. I’ve waterproofed the outside of high rise buildings that are still sealed after 20 years.

@@emrecenkers9721 the reason why urethane always fails is the center of the bead has a stronger adhesion in the center and the edges pull away. After cleaning the substrate lay a tiny bead of silicone into the corner. Let dry then run a bigger bead over top of the silicone. Remember to be very neat because the urethane will not adhere to the silicone therefore the edges are stronger than the center. It’s called a bond breaker.

Umm..why did you apply less caulk on the second bead.? And why are you not using your finger or a tool to push caulk into the gap? Don't cut such a big hole in your tip , use a wet rag to wet your fingers to help to reduce friction...The only time you're gonna lay a bead that you don't " finger " is if it's big gaps on exterior oil based caulk . Check your tip periodically to make sure the angle hasn't worn away, ...

I don't see where anything was "made" to look wrong. I did see someone taking the time to address beginner problems with solutions that may help those that don't have "talent" but at least have some interest in becoming better at something that does take a little time acquiring the coordination and skill to lay down a bead of caulk that bridges the legs of both joints. Real talent does quality work with least amount of effort and material waste. The "proper way" is all perspective cause anything can be made to look good on the outside, yet covering the mistakes made on the inside. How many walls, windows, doors, showers, are replaced because a 35 year talented professional didn't lay a bead of caulk properly by code? Or better yet didn't use the correct type for the application. Come on now, instead of being negative why not add some positive feedback to the person trying making an effort to help others become more confident working with sealants. Have a good day and be safe out there.
@justinmills3852
@justinmills3852 Жыл бұрын
@@andremartinez5127 this didn't solve a problem or make it easier. There is less caulk in that joint and I'm sure it's so thin if there is any movement in material that it would Crack or separate. The reason some things are done the way they are is maybe not because it's the "right way" but it's the necessary way of laying down a sufficient bead of caulk and getting the most longevity out of the application. Most videos like this solve little problems and muddy the waters with people who think they know how to do something but have no clue.

Example one is always....squeeze out WAY too much caulk and two is squeeze out about the right amount. YEP...works better every time putting down the right amount and straight. But the REAL Key to Caulking - from one whose done Marble Tubs/Surrounds and Home painting/building for years...is of course to choose the right size cut on the nozzle, squeeze out the right amount as you move the caulk gun along first, but then....MOST IMPORTANT ---- Use a rag and the right solvent and keep your finger clean as you press the bead home into the joint and clean up any excess - FROM your FINGER. For Latex Caulk, all you need is a H2O/Damp Rag to wipe your finger on as you run you a finger over the caulk. Keeping ur finger clear of any excess caulk allows you to press in and clean up the caulk perfectly every time. But wipe 10-15 inches, then clean your finger as it builds up, then wipe another section and clean the finger again...repeating until done. Any Excess - if it happens, can be wiped up with the clean end of the rag to ensure you have Zero over smear (if that happens at all which it won't if u get 1st part half way right and don't put on WAY too much like in this video). For Silicone Caulk, replace the H2O damp rag with Acetone and also use a spray bottle of Acetone. Use an acetone damped rag in one hand like described above, but in addition before you wipe with finger you also spray a light mist over the bead/work before you Run your finger down across the bead. It keeps the Silicone from sticking to area outside your bead and keeps your Finger clean as you wipe small sections, as you wipe rag to keep finger clean of excess. So Wipe/Clean Finger then Wipe/Clean Finger as you caulk with both Silicone and Latex and you get Perfect Beads every time. It is all about using the right solvent and a rag handy as u push the bead in to ensure it stays perfectly clean

It all has a functional shelf-life. Even unopened caulk will eventually spoil. Open caulk spoils much faster, no matter how you seal it. Nothing is askew with any of this. It eventually dries out. That's just life. If there's a "long time" between needed uses, you just have to purchase another tube.

Doesn't matter which method you apply caulk as long as it works for you. The reason is that there are many variables, but the main one is level of control of the pumping hand as the rate of caulk flow is key.

I'm sorry, but a lot of these methods are Bullshit, especially since when you show the "messy" way you very obviously fuck up the bead and make it look like shit (inconsistsnt pressure on the trigger, and speed). Then your "hack" looks a bit better because you actually took your time to do it right. The "hack" where you make the tip flat with the lighter is plain dumb, just cut a small 60 degree angle on the tip and you're good to go. Also, a good quality caulking gun goes a long way for consistant beads.

I've been a home builder and remodeling all my life , caulking can't be done backwards on wood , rough surfaces as it will get caught on splinters, holes ,nails ECT. It has to be pulled . Maybe smooth surface . But it real just takes a lot of doing it to know how much to push out and the speed you move . Plus you have to run your finger down it anyway for it to be correct. Silicone is even tricker. As it is sticker than painters caulk. Practice practice.

So pulling the caulking gun instead of pushing it is the “incorrect” way to do it. Then the very next tip is you PULLING the caulking gun instead of pushing it!!! Way to not even follow your own advice that you literally shown right before abandoning it, lol.

Useless! Nothing in here is useful. You’re better off spending a few bucks on some cheap silicone, find some scrap materials and practice. You’ll get better results practicing than taking these tips. There’s no explanation as to why these methods are better other than taking someone’s word. Just go practice.

Wait,. You forgot the futuristic tech disco trap music set at 10 points higher than our speakers can withstand. You also forgot to perform the unboxing of the products shown in the video and one last thing. Where is all the mindless life story ridden dialogue?......oh wait.......my bad. This is a well executed and thought out instructional video aimed at critical thinking adults. Smh. I get so confused these days. Lol.

I work in the aircraft industry and the 2nd way is how we get taught to seal fuel tanks, fuselages etc as it fills the potential void areas better. I'm inclined to agree the 2nd way is better.

Pushing the caulk gun tip forward is generally a terrible idea, but caulking two perfectly smooth solid slabs without any joint is the most controlled scenario and it turned out alright. I'll definitely try it next time! However it doesn't help for most real world applications. Cutting the tip properly and coordinating the movement of the gun with the flow of caulk is the best way to ensure a good product. Nice video

Yah this. the comparison shown in this video is ridiculous. careless application with a poorly cut tip vs a purposefully and carefully applied bead.
@donbrownist
@donbrownist Жыл бұрын
When you pull the caulk it spans the joint and then you have to tool the caulk to force it into the joint. When you push the caulk you force it into the joint and leave a little excess on top. If it were possible the best caulking job would fill the gap with no leftover exposed caulk.
@jnicemiz
@jnicemiz Жыл бұрын
@@donbrownist Not true. You can get the joint filled when pulling the caulk just fine. Proper hole side, proper tip cut angle, proper application angle, speed, etc will give a bead that requires little to no tooling, and a higher quality bead than pushing the caulk. Of course, any truly professional quality joint will require tooling anyway unless it's an exterior caulking that specifically states not to tool.

@@donbrownist check out the technique I outlined in a post above. GUARANTEES zero over run, GUARANTEES filling the joint ... You can keep going over it applying pressure on the caulk. GUARANTEES the most professional, highest quality joint better than ANY pro can achieve with a gun, including invisible joints if required (only really viable on an initial install) I have the results to prove it!

I’ve been caulking for well over ten years, and this video is very deceiving.. you must cut the tip to a 45* . No matter how good the caulk bead looks you must always tool it in both directions in order to create a perfect seal

Hysterical that they first show that you should "push" the caulk into place, but then in the techniques that follow they show the wrong way to do a small bead by "pulling" the caulk gun.
