Great White Sneaks Up on Family: My Drone Alerts Them of the Shark

This is footage I captured recently of a 9' juvenile great white shark curiously lingering near a family, which included two kids. This shark followed the yellow kayak for approximately 100 yards. The family sees my drone above the shark and huddles together to appear larger. After a couple passes, the shark eventually appears to lose interest and disappears into the deep. Unlike most encounters I've filmed, these folks did not pursue the shark after the initial encounter. Although the shark remained nearby for a few minutes, it never returned to the kayakers.

I encountered a very large bull shark while kayaking east Florida. It was ata least as big as the boat. It swam behind me then parallel to me for 15 min while I struggled exhaustively against waves to get back to my location origin. I sensed it behind me before I saw it, it was a very menacing presence. Really freaked me out. But I’ll never forget it. FYI, sharks favorite color is yellow, so don’t ever wear yellow or use yellow kayaks.

Had a bull shark about 6 ft long cruise right at me while I was wade fishing off a sand bar down in Ft Myers. It was near sunset and I was the only one in the water and it was calm as glass. Luckily I saw his fins break the water about 30ft away from me and I turned tail and highstepped it back to shore in lighting speed. I still replay that moment in my head all the time at night in bed and I am just grateful he decided to break the surface of the water when he did. Any close and I probably would have froze like a dear in headlights

@@oscarcat1231 well I was only about 150 from the shore at that point. And it was the Sebastian Inlet, which is very popular for paddle boarding and wind sailing . Even kids do paddle boarding. Isn't shark vision primarily monochromatic, I think they only have one type of cone photoreceptor in their eyes, so they see in shades of grey and ae attracted to bright contrast, yellow is pretty light, though, especially if paired with a darker colour.

@@AuRowe Only when you lose a loved one. Will you understand irresponsible parenting. Yes there are risks everywhere. There are risks jumping into a lion Cage. But no one in there right mind would do that now would they. But then idiots argue, you got more chance to die in car accident or lighting bolt. Well I would rather get killed in a car or lighting strike then to die being killed mawled by a shark and terrified. You only live once in this world. So life shouldn't be a gamble. Unless new technology comes to avoid a 100% shark attack, ill never jump or kayak in the ocean especially in the deep. The furthest I'll go, is if I can see the bottom and no more then 1 to 1.5 meters Max. Of course you can even get attacked there but very less likely. But then you have people going way beyond that, that's just insanity. When we ride a car we put on a seat belt. What protection you have in open ocean?

The calmness of the parent reminds me of my dad teaching me how to swim. Number 1 rule, dont panic, especially when tired or swallowing water, keep cool, keep moving. He would get my sister and I to gently hold onto his shoulder in the deep end and force us to use one hand to paddle so we dont make him sink. Ill never forget those days and i carry that calmness through self defence, corporate stress & other life dramas that come my way. Calm, well planned & decisive moves, no matter that is in front of you. Amazing footage, glad they stayed safe.

When you said "they're not panicking" I had to laugh. They dealt with the situation really well but I'm sure they were internally panicked. It's incredibly cool though that you are able to subtle alert people to potential dangers. I wonder if in the future it would be possible to use drones to communicate verbally. It's important to note that this is genuine Curiosity from the shark not aggressive "I'm eating that behavior" Another great thing you'll notice is the entire time the shark is following his Pectoral fins are cast out wide - this indicates the shark does not feel threatened and does plan on quickly accelerating towards the family - its just the shark going "I have no idea what the hell this floating thing is or why it keeps splashing like a seal" When you are in a sharks space/ the shark deems you are threatening its personal space, or you have startled a shark you will see their Pectoral fins lower down into almost a 45 degree V shape - this is the shark saying " I don't feel comfortable with you being here and you are making me nervous" ( I know, imagine the SHARK being nervous right?) Great work on lowering the drone to the surface to alert the family, they did the right thing by huddling together, alternatively, if you find yourself along on a paddleboard or kayak and notice a large shark curiously circling you, orientating yourself to face the shark can often make the shark think twice about approaching you as anything that is ovular or fish-like in shape the shark will interpret as the body, so if you face your kayak to the shark it will second guess coming much closer due to sharks inherent nature of attacking most prey from underneath or from a side profile, if it assumes your kayak, surfboard or paddleboard is "watching it" it can delay the opportunistic instinct to bite. Alternatively, if you ever find yourself in the water and there is a large shark circling, you may feel the urge to swim as fast as you can, this is probably the worst (albeit instinctive reaction) many people have, the correct thing to do is to orientate yourself vertically in the water (that is upright, not lengthways) a lot of recent research has suggested that remaining vertical in the water column often intimidates sharks because you don't look like a species of fish. if the shark continues to get closer to you or begins to dive underneath then prepare to hit in the nose. many sharks ( about 7 of the top 10) responsible for accidental shark attacks on people will do an "exploratory bump" before "investigatively biting" you. So whilst a shark coming towards you might be the last thing you want to put your fist near, remember that the shark is probably going to bump or closely pass you before he thinks about biting almost all sharks have extremely sensitive electromagnetic structures along their nose lines (incredibly oversensitive in the hammerhead family) and a sharp bonk on the sharps nose will immediately tell most juvenile sharks "nope" Source : 8 years in the field as a marine biologist & marine science researcher.

I have dreams of floating deep in the ocean ( drowning). In this reoccurring dream there is always one, then two great whites powerfully coming at me. I can’t see my body because my attention is fixed on the shark. - and I have no energy to move or defend myself... just drifting. Who knows! Maybe I had fallen off a ship after being shot or blasted off by some type of 💥 explosion? I think this dream can END now. I feel less effect. When it arrives I look at it and punch it square in the nose though the water causes resistance. I will keep in mind that if its fins are horizontal he is just curious

Basically I look at it like this. If you’re that far off into the ocean, you know what you’re getting yourself into. If you like the beach atmosphere then stay by the beach on the shallow part. If you like to swim, go to a pool ffs. Ocean is not a playground. Sharks aren’t monsters but an “investigation bite” from a shark can kill you. Then if you start to bleed, which you will, the shark might gets “hungry”.

You'd be surprised, sharks are very docile creatures, I have been right next to a shark myself while surfing. Living on the shore, you will come to understand that sharks have no intention of harming you, unless the sharks are Tiger, Great White, or Bull, then I typically stay in the water. Kayaks can also resemble dolphins if maneuvered correctly, I have heard stories of people trying to act like a dolphin to get the shark to leave. Your narration and music is calming and it highlights the calm beauty of the natural world that you are documenting. Honestly, you have created a little niche in the shark conservation effort that is informative and beautiful! Keep up the good work! It's also interesting to be made aware of the disappearing kelp. What a great interaction. The family was smart to stay together like that and the Dad kept facing the shark. Great job!!!

@@ClaimClam It is scary, but I was simply pointing out that they handled the interaction in the best possible manner. There are so many interactions that do not involve predatory behavior or exploratory biting. When we enter the ocean, we are subject to encounters with wildlife. It is no different that camping in the woods.

It might be displaying normal "curious" behavior, however, the vast majority of shark attacks on humans are also a result of normal and curious shark behavior. Some sharks see a potential food item and before they launch into a full-blown attack they give it a "gentle curious bite" to identify it and determine whether or not it's an appropriate food item for them. Bull sharks, Tiger sharks, and Great Whites are the three most common species responsible for attacks on humans. They are all more than capable of biting an adult human in half as well as cleanly and easily biting off arms and legs. These "curious test bites" are why so many shark attack victims survive and receive serious but only superficial wounds.

I just recently got back into surfing. About my 3rd surf back after 8 years off, a great white glided past me, just 3 metres forward of where I was sitting. I got all the swimmers in and i got out the water. It really is a different experience seeing a shark, but it was on its way somewhere else and seemed to have no interest in coming in for a closer look. Absolutely fascinating animal 👍
