Large Great White Sharks Near Shore in Cape Cod

In August, I was able to spend a week in Cape Cod with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy observing and learning about the local white shark populations. The first thing I noticed is that white sharks on the coast here tend to be a bit larger than the juvenile sharks I observe in Southern California. At one point, I filmed a shark approximately 12-14 feet long just 25 yards from shore. This video is part one of a series I'm releasing about sharks in and around Cape Cod.
We spent a few days on the water monitoring, observing, and tagging white sharks. It was very much a learning experience and I was very happy to share my knowledge of drones with scientists in the area to help in scientific research and public safety.

I remember visiting Cape Cod in 2002 and going to Nauset beach. I saw a seal pop upright next us and immediately wanted to get out of the water. My buddy said there were no sharks. I told him if there were seals there were sharks. It may have taken 8 or so years but the sharks definitely showed up. Within 10 years Cape Cod went from having almost no GW sharks to being one of the hot spots in the world.

I used to fish for bluefish off the northern tip of Nantucket island (30 miles off Cape Cod). Up until the early '90s, you never saw seals on the beach and only occasionally in the water. In 2012, the last time I was there, I couldn't even land a fish there without a seal stealing it off my line. The beach was covered with them -- the island had 15,000 of them. A comeback indeed.

The reason they are more cautious on the cape is because the sharks in general are much larger and they are actively hunting and feeding on seals within feet of the shore.

I learned to swim on Nantucket Island, off Cape Cod, and as a kid went out 100 yards or more into the ocean to body surf and surf. Then "Jaws" -- which was filmed on Nantucket and nearby Martha's Vineyard -- came out. I don't know how I convinced my mother to let me see it, but I wish I hadn't. Great film but It took me 2 years before I felt fully comfortable in the water again.

JAWS was filmed on Martha’s Vineyard, not Nantucket. I’ve read dozens of books and interviews about the making of JAWS and never read anything about Nantucket filming.

The difference between Cape Cod and everywhere else is that the seals are actually right on the same beach that the people are. The shark are hunting mammals in the surf. In California they hunt seals more offshore. It is not safe to swim or paddle out on Cape Cod. If people did that, there would a lot of accidental attacks.

I jumped off jaws bridge. One hell of a current. The ferry is a mile from my house to go to the cape islands. It's a really beautiful place and I was their in May. The water is warmer here in August than in California and the water is way clearer here

can confirm. was swimming out there about 25 yards out just past breakers 5-6ft of water and out pops a seal head 5 feet from me. I got out right after that bc I kind of look like a fat seal and didn't want Jaws thinking i was one too

I swam off of the Cape all the time in the late 70s, before the seals made a comeback and the Cape turned into a snack bar for Great Whites. Not going back out there now!

Many years ago I would go surfing off the coast of Wellfleet and be only slightly worried about sharks. Now I wouldn't do it, especially after the fatal attack there.

You have to remember that millions of people go swimming in Wellfleet each yr and other parts of the outer Cape, and since 1837, there have only been 2 deaths and 15 interactions with Great whites! Now, given seals were hunted into extinction, and only until 1960, they banned killing seals, and since then, there's a little over 100k between Grey and Harbor seals! Now people swim in Cape Cod all summer without any provocations! But still worldwide, there's an average of 10 people dying from sharks! Only in 1936 and 2018 have there been deaths from a Great W?white there!

Was just out in Chatham a few weeks back and took a seal boat tour just behind North beach. We saw 2 spotter planes and could hear them talking to the Research boats calling out the shark locations.

I think there’s more caution on the Cape because 1.) they’re relatively new and 2.) the water is warmer and there are more casual swimmers. You don’t need a wetsuit, eg.

My hometown or area i should say. We love our White Sharks here. They have been plentiful over the past 10+yrs. Especially, with the Gray Seal population surging. I'm glad you covered our area on your channel. The more we can learn about these massive fish the better. And more importantly protect our summer bathers from any "potential" harm. We did have one attack here and it was fatal i believe back in 2018 but it's VERY rare. We haven't had one since 1936...!!! But i feel the more seals and people in the water the likelihood of attacks going up might be. So you have too be vigilant about when and where your swim.

Great point on "caution". We have MUCH larger sharks here then in California at least in my opinion they are. I've seen them even BIGGER than 14ft. We've had a couple in the 16ft range and one that was 18ft...!!! So yes these are mature adults not juveniles.

Thanks! There's definitely not bigger sharks there than in California. I'm not saying it as a competitive statement, I'm just saying it as a fact. 14-18 footers are very common in our waters. The only difference is that in Cape Cod, the population center is closer to the where the big sharks are, whereas here, much of the populated beaches are near nurseries. I've filmed a 15 footer in the surf just 20 yards off shore here. The areas that mirror Cape Cod in California are very much inaccessible by humans due to either being protected waters or private land. Luckily I have access to these areas now and I'll show you 20 footers pretty soon.

This is my shark backyard! Or was, lol. My family owned a house in Eastham right on the beach (Cook’s Brook) for years, and we always played with horseshoe crabs and swam with grey seals as kids. Growing up we knew the sharks were around and I found them thrilling-still do-but yes the local population is much, much more fearful and reserved about them, which makes sense. Lots of mature males and females doing hunting cruises. Still it’s wonderful to see them pass the buoys on the app and people get excited too! Fear and love can go hand in hand, and certainly does out on the Cape sometimes. Thank you so much for sharing.

I lived in Marshfield, Massachusetts, back in the early 60s. Marshfield is a beach town on the mainland and is directly across from Provincetown at the tip of Cape Cod. I remember all of the beaches being shutdown for several weeks one summer because of Great White Shark sightings in Cape Cod bay. Back then, it was not common because of the decline in the seal population.

Perhaps another reason for the more cautious reaction to Great Whites on Cape Cod beaches compared to California, is that they are fairly recent arrivals as you indicated in the video, because of the rebound in the seal population. California has a much longer history with them so maybe beachgoers in CA are just more used to having them around. There was also a fatal great white shark attack near the area you filmed a few years ago, as well as a few other non fatal attacks over the last 10 years or so.

To be honest I grew up going to the beach very often and now with the increasing shark attacks and then they are now so close to shores; before I knew of hammer and tiger sharks close but still further out and I could go in the ocean up to 6 feet or less. But after seeing so many getting close on drones. In my younger years we had to be careful with underwater pressure that would take you further out or into the water at certain beaches that we already knew and sometimes it moves you way to the sides. By seeing that amount so close there’s no way I’m swimming in the ocean and now because people bringing alligators as pets then threw them in an area that it was awesome to go to the restaurants on the ocean and then at the end of the row of restaurants there is an area you could go swimming but in 2 decades after they adapted and reproduce now you can’t swim there or even out of the water in a shaded area of palm trees you can’t even go picnic , grilling or swimming. They are spread out the fishermen that picked the fresh seafood at the restaurants have gone out of business and dangerous fishing and the parking lots of the restaurants now you can’t even go and have an evening dinner. We never had this trouble and another thing is we never had poisoning snakes or like anacondas type of snake. People too in illegal trafficking brought them. Let me tell you it was awesome to go hiking at the rain forest and even that has changed. So now enjoy swimming in a pool.

Amazing footage! Nothing beats the beauty of the outer Cape beaches. Water gets deep fast and seals are hunted very close to shore. Sometimes you get lucky to witness predation, but most of the time you walk up on a beached dead seal with a massive hole punched out.

There is a video on youtube where a great white comes up to the boat, creepily stares for a few seconds than swims away. The video is called something like giant shark encounter cape cod 2017.They showed the video to coast guard and was verified a white shark over 22ft

I was traumatized by the Jaws movies as a kid. I won't even go thigh deep in the ocean anymore lol.. but these videos are really cool. I appreciate sharks and any living creature for that matter. but I just can't get down with swimming in the ocean. These videos have certainly helped to lessen the fear of sharks and to see how beautiful and important they are. but I still choose to have my feet on the shore haha. thanks for sharing!

We all got traumatized by jaws but you don't need to be scared, I've dived with sharks, it's one of the most beautiful experiences one could ever do in your life. Being in the ocean swimming doesn't mean there's a great white next to you, you just need to respect the environment don't go out when light is low or no one else is around, stay within the flags and enjoy

Great to see more of you from Cape Cod, Carlos! Very different sharks (mature ones, actively hunting seals) and vibe from the population, not least because the peninsulas big business as a summer destination. That part hasn't changed from Benchley's Jaws.... I've had the Sharktivity app for 2 years now and frequently check it in season - even though I'm in Europe! You don't just see pings of the tags and spotter plane warnings but also sightings and photos from the general public, including occasional predation photos and videos. It's really cool. I wouldn't travel to US again nowadays, with the unstable political climate, restrictions on women's autonomy, daily gun violence and the many horror stories about ordinary, harmless foreign tourists and business people harassed by TSA (massively increased since 2016). But I hope some day it'll be better again and I can go see the Cape Cod great whites for myself 🤞🏻

I think that it's smart to stay away from the water when sharks and seals because you know that is a feeding ground yes just as long as they report it. Don't go to the water where seals are. I hope that you put buoys out for large waves such as tsunami even though we are not like that of the ring of fire I think everyone had a scare when lapalma volcano went off.

The Cape... One of the greatest places in The US... The best beaches... The best sun rise! But they do not kill seals here for 50 years. Sharks eat seals... Huge supply of food for sharks.. Don't swim dawn or dusk, ever

Excellent you were able to come to MA with your artwork! Hope you were able to go to Stellwagen bank to see the diversity of species we have! But the World's biggest population of seals are at Sable Island Canada. I read somewhere that where they are so many they group together and chase the White Sharks away!
