We're putting on our lab coats this week to conduct a test for you all... Does yeast make that much of a difference? This is the question we often get asked and decided to put to the test!!
We brewed a 40lt batch of beer using the Grainfather G40, split it into 2 fermenters and added 2 different dry yeast strains from Mangrove Jacks to test this out! M36 Liberty Bell and M66 Hop Head...
The beer is an America Pale Ale using Summit T90 hop pellets and the malt bill is 46% Heidelberg, 46% Pale Ale Malt, 5% Carahell & 3% Light Crystal. We added hop additions at 60min, 7min and 2mins as well as a dry hop after primary fermentation was complete. The full recipe for both beers and a 40lt batch with both yeast options is available on our website here:

I like most of the Mangrove craft yeast range, my favourites are the M76, M21, M66.

I’d have guessed LB would have had more malt character whereas the HH with added enzyme would have made for a drier thinner mouthfeel. Liberty Bell getting added to my next order!

Thanks for this coincidently I did a summit pale with willamette for bittering using s04 yeast, nice taste but finished very dry 1.003. Liberty bell and warmer mash next time

OG was low 1.065 instead of 1.075, 2 packets to start, just added a Nottinhill and it’s on its was, not sure what the hold up was, but they say it happens to everyone at some point, but hey I’ve got it out of the way now, I hope:-)

Great video, I've just got back into brewing after 30 years, kit at the moment. Didn't realise you could use different yeasts.

A great experiment is to switch the yeast on a kit! Makes a world of difference!! What style kits are you brewing? IPA/Pale Ale/Bitter?

I’m surprised with your verdict, when I heard you say that sample A had more malt I thought instantly “that’s the Liberty Bell”!!! I have a pack waiting for a brew next weekend - judging from the video do you recommend pitching directly into the wort and fermentation temp of 20 degrees? It’s going into medium hopped English amber ale.

Yes that’s what we did with this batch, cooled to 14 for the dry hop! Let us know how it goes! 👍🏻

Great suggestion. We wanted to asses appearance as well as flavours but that’s a good shout for future comparisons 👍🏻

It surely does make a difference... It also helps when the yeast doesn't take 10 days to reach you when you order it unfortunately...

Absolutely! We get asked a lot though about how much of a difference it makes and it’s always good to experiment! Are you in Europe buddy?

@@themaltmiller8438 I am indeed. Ordered on Sunday and on your end you did, usual a great job and my order left your warehouse on Monday. Unfortunately, despite heavy custom cost and other DHL fees, my yeast is still sitting somewhere in a DHL warehouse in France. Having been a big customer before brexit I still love buying my stuff from you guys but lately it’s been catastrophic for deliveries in France…

Interesting.....putting these yeasties on my next shopping list. Just goes to show what you get ain't always what you might expect. Case in point; I just did my last order from you , and finally it's time to sup ! I did 5.5 kg Maris Otter, 65 degrees for 1 hour , 70 for 5 mins , 60 min boil with 20g Citra at 30 , 20g at 20 ,20g at 10 . 1 pack US 05 , rehydrated , ferment at 19C , 40g Citra dryhop for 7 days. Blow me , if it isn't a cast-iron estery Belgian Blond tasting thing. Not what I expected , not unpleasant , and a bit random . Suggestion for future taste testing? Any chance you could maybe liken brews to commercial ones we may be familiar with ? It would add to the already descriptive notes , for a fuller picture. Unless toy can email me samples! Still waiting on THAT technology ........

Haha! So many commercial beers that it makes it hard to call tasting notes against examples unless it’s a direct clone. The emailed samples would be amazing though!! 👍🏻
