There is a myriad of things he COULD have done in that moment, but he did what his brain decided was best and I mean... he still got to snap his fingers.

Uru isn't indestructible, just ask Hela. If she can break Mjolnir made of Uru but the infinity gauntlet can't touch it, then Hela would be stronger than Thanos even with the Full Gauntlet. And she was beaten by Surter, which would make him a being stronger than the being who could overpower a metal that beat a full Infinity Gauntlet.

@@jefferickson8493Uru is used specifically to harness the stones. Not to beat Hela. Her being able to destroy Uru metal is irrelevant. And that logic doesn’t work, the metal is designed to be able to harness the stones. It’s not meant to be indestructible. Hela destroying that metal doesn’t equate to her being stronger than the stones or whatever you just tried to say. That would be like saying Batman is stronger than Superman because he can destroy kryptonite, and kryptonite can easily kill Superman.

Because stormbreaker was supposed to be a myth, the gauntlet wasn't a myth, Odin had a replica in hit vault. So if the Gauntlet was already known, and stormbreaker was supposed to be the strongest weapon, then I definitely think it's alot strong than what ppl thinks, plus it has powers from groot aswell that no1 seems to think about too. So I think we will find out more about stronbreaker in later movies. We'll I hope atleast.

To be fair he destroyed the ship Thor was on in a attempt to kill him. The surviving half of the Asgardians already were allowed to leave the ship. Thor was on Thanos' personal list of who he should kill. Where Thanos wanted to kill Thor repeatedly Hulk and Loki temporarily stalled him. Thanos believed the destruction of Thor's ship and the cold vast of space would be enough to kill Thor but was unaware that the GotG showed up to save him.

That and maybe he thought killing Loki might break him a bit? Sure they had a tough relationship, to put it mildly, but it obviously hurt Thor when he died in front of him. Thanos seems to slip from balanced death to focused punishment from time to time(toying with Starlord/The Guardians, replacing Nebula's parts, and torturing her in front of her sister). It may not be wanton killings but still somewhat sadistic. Also cuts into the indifferent theory slightly, trying to kill Thor and actually killing Loki, but they do have history

I have an alternate theory. In the comics, Thanos says he will give his enemy 1 chance to win. In the film as even you point out, he could have destroyed any and all of the Avengers, at any time. He chose not to. He even tells Thor, "You should have gone for the head." Thanos is the master of gamesmanship. He gave Thor one chance. Thor failed.

Okay but if it was a "you get one chance" that would mean that Thor used that chance to defeat thanos by firing at Thanos first. Since he didn't defeat Thanos in "one chance" then it wouldn't make sense that Thanos would "hold back" He almost lost the gauntlet during the fight on Titan. I don't see how, having 4 stones - facing the Guardians and some of the Avengers and almost losing the Gauntlet...he would "hold back" even if he picks them off one-by-one. He always does that. Everytime he attacks 1) he doesn't kill unless attacked 2) he has others kill and genocide for him 3) he knew Odin was a threat and it wasn't until he died...And... 3a) a "civil war" *Hela vs. Thor* lead to Ragnarok that Thanos could overpower the survivors of Asgard ...3b) Hulk attacks first - Thanos puts him down. Hulk is saved by Heimdall. Loki attacks first and gets his neck snapped ..3c) crushes James Rhodes Ironman suit...Hulk isn't anywhere near a threat. BASICALLY - He knows how to assess a situation or set of events well enough that..he gets all 6 stones 🤦‍♂️ 4) Just because the gauntlet and Stormbreaker were made from the same material does not explain how that spacemetal could withstand the what we see *multiple stones used to create a beam of energy to obliterate Thor. I think that because it can summon the bifrost, that's what "beats" Thano's beam. The bifrost would have to be made of the energy of all stones 1) space (to traverse the universe) 2) time (to traverse space) 3) mind (heimdall thinks it, person goes there...Thor thinks it, Thor goes there) 4) soul (to be able to locate persons across the universe) 5) reality (Asgard gets its strenth/power from persons who believe in them/their legends. Thus, Odin - being able to create a dimension (Hel) to trap Hela in would cresting a "type" of reality *a pocket dimension* ...As belief is tied to Asgard is toAsgard Odin is to Creator Figure...Thus, the Rainbow bridge/Bifrost would be capable of traveling dimensions 6) power (if this one needs to be explained..) Soo...if we see the bifrost/rainbow color shield barrier Stormbreaker has as Thano's beam hits it Wouldn't that be closer to how Stormbreaker could have beat the might of multiple stones ? (Remember Thanos used 2 stones to break up a planet and teleport it at the same time. So it's not like he would just use one stone or think "I only need *x* to beat Thor when he knows the stuff I said lol

Going to go with the bifrost theory and that thanos didn't have full knowledge about how to use all the stones to their fullest. Not to mention its hard to tell how fast storm breaker was being thrown. Just because it appears not that fast to the audience of the movie doesn't mean Thor didnt throw it at mach 5-100. In the comics he throws it so fast he able to fly at light speed. I know the mcu is different but still.

I would be more inclined to believe the theory where Thanos wanted the snap to decide who died over the other because, when he snapped, he seemed just as surprised as Thor that the gauntlet was damaged and smoking. If he were afraid of damaging it, he probably would have expected that.

That person would be Tony Stark because Doctor Strange made sure Thanos gave his word to spare Tony Starks life. I like this theory. Thanos embraced a 'holy' war after he got the space stone. He removed his armor and was no longer engaged in a battle to kill and massacre. Assembling the stones would take away the effort of going planet-to-planet as Gamora so rightly said. But, I do still wonder juat a little if he fully.grasped the extemt of power at his hand, and how to use it. To alter reality by snapping away half of all life is a tremendous feat, which literally roasted the gauntlet. So, yes, maybe, he withheld that power as he dealt with the Avengers one by one, little by little. I'm not so sure that Stormbreaker, wielded by Thor, can overpower all 6 stones.

@@wh0_odat644 throughout his quest, he undoubtedly learned what each can do. On Titan, he was at their mercy with 4 stones in hand. If Peter was able to keep himself in check, likely Thanos would have been done. At the moment he got the mind stone, he barely had a moment to embrace that surge before defending his conquest. Whether he threw everything he had into defending himself from Thor and/or Stormbreaker remains questionable to me. How do you defend yourself against a God and a weapon never before used in the universe? He may have had a bit of predicament to react instinctively and effectively. Stormbreaker didn't kill him then, but the stones almost did when he tried to destroy them. We might never know what he was trying to achieve at that moment against his adversary who "he never fought twice". Yet, Thor was certain enough that he needed this weapon to defeat Thanos... who had only two stones in hand by that time.

@@wh0_odat644 the writers and producers are just brilliant throughout the entire series of films, in how they bring everything together. You never really know for sure who is going to shine. Thor stole Infinity War. He went on a quest to see who was behind the motivation to collect infinity stones and willed himself to do what was necessary after losing everything. In the opening scenes after Thanos killed Heimdall, he said "You're going to die for that." He would land the last blow of the avengers at the end of the film, with the words, "I told you... you'd die for that." Didn't miss his mark in the beginning of Endgame. No mistakes repeated. And in the final epic battle, he would say, "Let's kill him properly this time." Nothing deterred his ferocity. But he did get an ass-kicking, though, when the Trinity fought Thanos alone.

In the back of my mind I have always had a theory that stormbreaker wasn't overpowering the stones themselves but rather the gauntlet. The dwarf king designed and created both the gauntlet and stormbreaker, it would make sense that he would create some kind of hidden weakness within the gauntlet (think, exhaust port in the death star), and then created stormbreaker to be able to exploit this weakness. Just a theory.

this is basiaclly word for word what i said about it; the dwarf seemed to be very sure stormbreaker WAS THE most powerful weapon he'd ever witnessed... and the fact it hadnt been crafted yet screams that odin + dwarf KNEW this fact and purposefully let the universe THINK the gauntlet was the most powerful, when in reality; stormbreaker would have amplified odins power... which would have made odin powered up on levels perhaps he KNEW he'd need someday against LARGER enemies (hints at galactus). idk if odin knew for sure if he'd need to sleep BEFORE all of that though, maybe he did indeed let his guard down and thats how this all unfolds, but in the end; odin and dwarf were Scheming Rune powered cosmic weapons since the beginning so stormbreaker being a "fail safe" incase SOmEoNe* goes nuts.

I think it’s simpler than what you said. The gauntlet is made from Uru in order to contain the power of the stones and allow the user to manipulate its power. Therefore Uru has properties that the stones cannot harm (until they’re used in full power). Therefore Stormbreaker (made of Uru) is resistant to the power of the stones, naturally. So as long as Thanos didn’t use them at full power like he did in Endgame, stormbreaker would have always beat the stones.

There has to be a resistance factorto it. Just like electricity flowing through a circuit, it has to go somewhere unless it is contained. If the gauntlet can contain the energy then there has to be a resistance factor involved. But that all if we are talking logically which none of this is. It's all fantasy, so people can come up with as many different ideas as they want.

One theory I'd like to further enhance this is that Etri could have also put a flaw in the Gauntle.The Gauntle won't work as well against other Uru weapons. That may explain why when he was fighting Carol, he separated the Power Stone to knock her back, even with Tony's Gauntle.

In my opinion, the infinity gauntlet basically acts like the Bifrost mechanism Asgardians use for intergalactic travel that's why Stormbreaker was able to overpower it. Following the theory, Thanos meant to banish Thor from Earth by using the Bifrost generated by the gauntlet but unknowingly failed because of the capabilities of Stormbreaker. The Bifrost was constructed because dark energy, which fueled the transportation, causes much strain to use by both the conjurer and the traveler alike. Asgardians constructed the rainbow bridge and Himinbjorg to act as catalyst for effortless and harmless travel using the Bifrost. This very same principle was used by Eitri in the construction of the gauntlet, much like how Tony miniaturized the arc reactor, Eitri did it to the gauntlet; a miniaturized Himinbjorg. It could be because Stormbreaker was fully forged, this combined with the unlocked full power of Thor made Stormbreaker capable of standing up to the power of that blast and stick into Thanos. For those who are not following, Mjolnir was never fully forged in the Norse Saga, as Loki sabotaged the forging process. Mjolnir was intended to be a a two handed war hammer, but it wasn't fully forged and as a result became a one handed war hammer. This could be true for the MCU, if Mjolnir isn't a fully forged war hammer, then if someone fully forged Mjolnir again, it could be twice as strong, perhaps able to summon a Bifrost or create vortex portals if fully forged. We've also seen what happened when all the stones are used at once, Thanos had it fused to his hand after he used all 6 stones to destroy each other, so it is also possible when Stormbreaker was cutting through the energy beam that beam wasn't a result of all the stones being used.

I think it had to do with the FACT that STORMBREAKER was specifically designed to defeat the power of the stones. Remember that Thanos killed all of the other dwarfs and demolished Etri's hands in order to prevent them from creating a weapon, STORMBREAKER, that could defeat the power of the gauntlet. The dwarfs were designing STORMBREAKER as they were being forced by Thanos to build the gauntlet. That's why there was a cast readily available. STORMBREAKER had the ability to absorb that energy, plus it was being propelled by the full might of Thor's power. Thor was hell-bent to keep his promise for the death of his best friend, Heimdahl.

Less than beasts, mere flies to be swatted aside. He reacted so strangely when Cap stopped his hand, because Cap didn't use Mjolnir, or magic bands, or alien vines, or plasma blasts. Cap just stopped the mighty, inevitable hand of Thanos with "mere mortal" hands. Once Thanos recovered from the shock of this, he put Cap down like the rest. When Thanos was fighting on Titan, he was ambushed, he was grieving, and he barely had control of the Stones he was using. Even as soon as Wakanda, that had all changed. He put aside his grief, he refocused on the goal, and he better understood the power at his disposal. Everything the heroes threw at him on Titan, he had an answer for in the stones. Only Strange, whose powers rivaled the Stones, and Stark who refused to go down until the bitter end, could even resist him. Then comes a total surprise attack from Stormbreaker. A weapon that did not exist until Thanos already had most of the Stones. A weapon forged to be wielded by a King and used to kill gods. When this suddenly comes hurtling out of the blue at full power, Thanos does not think of it as a fly to be swatted. He is afraid. He forgets the power of the Stones. All that goes through his head is fear and rage of something truly powerful. Could the Stones be used to portal it away, move it out of phase, or turn it into bubbles? Possibly. But not by him at that moment. When he partially remembered how powerful the Stones could make him, he blindly turned their full, raw power toward repulsing the attack in the way of his older, original training. He met an unstoppable force in kind, thinking that would be enough. Hoping it would. He had already lost the battle in his head.

With the Power Stone, Thanos no longer lacked the raw force needed to finish his task. Any planet he went to could simply be destroyed, if he so chose. But Thanos had to reckon with that change in his strength. That's why he tested himself against Loki, Thor, and Hulk. Next, Thanos acquired the Space Stone. Now he could go to any planet in an instant, and I believe it was even confirmed the Space Stone acted as a homing agent to help him find the other Stones. But Thanos had to reckon with the smallness of his world. No more spaceships were necessary, no more running, no more flying. He could just be where he wanted to be, and Thanos took a while to grasp that. That's where Knowhere comes in; he realized he could get there and take the next stone before anyone could stop him. Then he got the Reality Stone, and I think that's where Thanos really started to break. He had had Power and Space before the stones, just not the totality. He had had the Power to invade and raze worlds. He had had the ability to travel great distances through the universe via his ships. But Reality was always a grappling contest he lost. Whatever he did, he had no more control over what was Real than anyone else. Once he got the Reality Stone, had the Power to make those delusions real, and the Space Stone to further enhance his control, Thanos could not possibly have a concept of limits. To him, he could do anything, which had to have caused some choice paralysis. He played out an entire alternate scene in which the Guardians defeated him, made it unreal, and prevented them from actually stopping him. Later on, after the next Stone, he'd even change reality to bring Titan back to how it was. Only to change it back because he'd long since accepted the reality of that, embraced it. With Power, Space, and Reality alone, Thanos could eventually overcome the whole universe with his will like Ego had planned. But he craved more. So he got the Soul Stone. And no Power could bring Gamora back. No Space would reveal her to be hiding from him, nor allow him to escape his crime. Not even the power of Reality could change back what he had done. Gamora was gone, forever. Even when he got the next Stone from Strange, going back would not give him back HIS Gamora, the one he sacrificed. And I don't think Thanos ever fully appreciated what the Soul Stone could do. He used it for three things: to reveal which copy of Strange was the real one, to failingly oppose the Stormbreaker, and to perform the Snap.

But after he bested Stark and the indomitable Doctor Strange, and put down all the lesser allies found on Titan, he gained a power we never saw him use properly: save for once. The Time Stone. Thanos allowed the Mind Stone to be swiped from right under his nose, and only when he saw the consequences did he realize "I have the power to make this never happen." All of Time, all cause and effect, had been laid open to him. And yet Thanos carried on in the present, looking to a future even he saw as inevitable. But he was held back by pride: he wanted the universe to know him and be grateful. Finally, the Mind Stone. And I think this sealed the Stormbreaker encounter, and the subsequent destruction of the Stones. With this final stone, Thanos understood in totality what he had done. And when the god-breaking Stormbreaker came plummeting toward him, hurled by a wrathful God of Thunder who had little left to lose, I'm sure the Mind Stone pummeled the Mad Titan's already unstable mind with screaming thoughts of "OH NO WE'RE BONED!" explaining to him the many vast powers of the Stormbreaker and how royally screwed he'd be if the weapon hit him. If it took off his arm, if it took off his head, he would be denied of his goal. He had no focus to out-strategize Thor, even if a Stone could have given him all the Time he needed. But...maybe the Gauntlet did. Maybe the Mind Stone influenced Space and Reality, so that instead of killing Thanos, the weapon landed somewhere he could survive it. So that it could not physically land anywhere else. I don't know if that was at all Thanos' doing, but it sounds like something the Mind Stone can and would do.

Stormbreaker didn’t overpower the gauntlet. Thanos fired his blast *at* Thor. Stormbreaker has the power of the bi-frost. Thor threw his Stormbreaker *at* the beam that Thanos fired at *him.* The bifrost caused this energy to be teleported away. Bifrost is a form of teleportation. Thanos might have done many other things with the Gauntlet: He could have turned Thor into ice and shattered him as he did in the comics. He would have turned Stormbreaker into ribbons like he did to Drax. But he wasn’t aiming at Stormbreaker - he aimed at Thor. So give Thor credit for a desperate and brilliant strategy in an impossible situation. Ultimately all of Thor’s efforts were doomed as Thanos had the reality stone, the time stone, and the soul stone making him effectively invincible. I know the ‘fans’ hate that fact but it’s true. At the end of the film Stormbreaker simply reversed out of Thanos chest and fell to the ground while he teleported away. In the last scene it is clearly shown that Thanos has no damage to his chest. The damage is reversed in time - same as with Dr. Strange and Dormamu. You can’t defeat 6 Infinity Stones with an Axe - no matter how powerful. Per Etri - the purpose of the axe - was to *kill Thanos* - not over power the Infinity Stones.

It does make a lot of sense. Plus it adds on to what we see in Endgame where thanos is displaying his full power without the infinity stones. He essentially has all the power but only uses it to get what he needs, even if that involves sparing his enemies. He is a warrior and a good one, but he did get a bit complacent with his power, thinking he just needed to use it against everything instead of getting out of the way, which why stormbreaker hit him in the chest.

Thanos was holding back the whole time. He never in his entire career went around just killing everybody. He fought when there was resistance and then randomly executed half the population. He was never shown to be a cold blooded killer. His "work" was, in his mind, designed to save life and make people live happier lives. It was not personal for him and he even says exactly that. His energy beam attack was aimed at Thor, not Stormbreaker, and therefore can be deduced it was intended to disable Thor, not stop a flying Uru axe or destroy it. None of Thanos' attacks damaged the gauntlet short of the snap, so it's easy to determine the amount of power being channeled was not enough to overcome the integrity of Uru and cause any damage to Stormbreaker.

There is one detail I would like to bring up that kinda contradicts your theory. It seems Thanoss' snap was not entirely unbiased, since Nebula and Tony Stark survived, and earlier in the movie Thanoss made deals with Gamora and Doctor Strange to keep both alive. The infinity gauntlet isn’t designed to release energy beams instead each stone is an aspect of the of the universe such as time, space, reality and the rest so it didn’t overpowered gauntlet it over powered energy beam which isn’t as impressive. the only stone that is designed to release power/energy is the power Stone so already we can say that Stormbreaker didn’t overpower the gauntlet but rather just An energy beam from the power Stone. It's not the stones themselves but the Gauntlet. Thor says "[I]t's all inside your head." Meaning Eitri knew how to build a weapon to counter the power of the Gauntlet, not necessarily the stones themselves. Stormbreaker is made specifically to fight the Gauntlet as that is the only way a being could wield multiple stones. If six individuals used all six stones against Stormbreaker at once, it would lose.

As another already commented, Stormbreaker was able to divert the gauntlet's power blast elsewhere. That's because its wielder can command the Rainbow Bridge, a reality warping means of transport. In fact, if you look closely, not only do you see the main thrust of the gauntlet's power blast, but you can see a rainbow-like coruscanting of power where the hammer meets the gauntlet's power beam. You can also see along the outer edges of the beam the power signatures of the individual stones. Conclusion: Thanos wasn't properly using the gauntlet. After being slammed by Thor's uber-powerful lightning blast, augmented by the hammer, Thanos panicked and just blasted at Thor with a largely uncontrolled power beam (the evidence of this is the individual power signatures visible along the edges of the beam, as noted). If Thanos hadn't panicked, he could have used the stones in any number of ways to stop the hammer before it got even close. But he fell back on brute force in his panic instead of using more subtle means.

This makes perfect sense to me. It seems very obvious looking back that Thanos was not fighting to his full potential in infinity war. Especially at the final fight scene in endgame where Thanos was not at all concerned with saving anyone from this universe, he appears to unleash his much more brutal fighting ability on the big 3 avengers. I like these theories. Makes me excited about upcoming films and the continued marvel saga altogether.

I agree with the fact that thanos held back and was also taken by surprise but I don't care this is an unrivaled feat in the mcu, thor overpowered a blast with 6 infinity stones man

wasnt the bitfrosst used as a weapon in thor 1?and someone even mentioned that the bitfrost uses massive amounts of energy to use. Its possible that instead of absorbing the energy away, stormbreaker is actually using the bitfrost itself as a weapon to counter the atack.

A bit off topic… but seeing Thor fight next to Cap made me realize that in big fights, heavies like Thor and Hulk would probably be more effective is the squishy Avengers like Cap, Widow and Hawkeye werent on the field. They could just unleash without having to hold back.

It didn't actually look to me like a singular beam. Looked like he was firing all of them singularly alongside the others. Whether they coalesce down the beam doesn't mean the beam at that point is more powerful. And we've seen all kinds of things deflect singular beams from infinity stones. We know Vibranium can withstand a direct blast, and whatever metal Corvus spear was made from can deflect one. It's not that crazy to think a godly weapon like that could blast through 6 beams.

I think it was a bit of all of them (Except the Bifrost thing...that one make no sense.) BUT also Thanos not wanting to damage HIMSELF in the process. He knew the power of the stones could destroy the gauntlet so he didn't want to use the full might of it so that the gauntlet wasn't destroyed, but also that he wasn't killed by the effects before he could snap.

Another thing to consider is the handle. It's made of Groot's arm, who 'sacrificed himself' (just with some pain) to complete Stormbreaker. I wonder if the Soul Stone responded to Groot's will, similarly to how Steve Rogers was able to stop Thanos' strike, and negated it or something. idk I like the bifrost theory though.

Asguardians knew what they were doing same with petrie they made it resistant to the infinity stones in some degree

Stormbreaker can open the bifrost , Dark energy is above light , by the way bifrost and 6 infinity stones have the same colors so probably Stormbreaker can be used against infinite energy as it possesses Dark energy. Thor still does not know about the Thor force which is passed to him after Odin past away . So may be we get to see super powerful Thor in the near future.
