Dear Sir: Being an admitted math hack would you not agree that in your right-angled triangle example that the angles of all three sides must all add up to 180 degrees? Well, when you assume to round a right-angled triangle’s solution then you are either arriving at a number less than 180 degrees or greater than 180 degrees. Pythagoras is likely rolling in his grave. Answer #01 = 5 feet (WRONG); Actual answer to the height of the ridge board above the top plate is: 4 feet, 11 - 5/8 inches. In carpentry speak you are long by 3/8 inch. Answer #02 = 11.5 feet (WRONG); Actual answer to the height of the ridge board above the top plate is: 11 feet, 6 - 9/16 inches. In carpentry speak you are short by 9/16 inch. No harm in being a math hack, but please don't pretend to be a carpenter; it already remains enough of a challenge to build structures plumb, level, and square. By definition, the right-angled triangle has one 90 degree angle and two acute (< 90 degree) angles and the sum of the angles of a right-angled triangle is always 180 degrees.

What if you have the pitch instead of degrees like a 4/12 how do you compute that?

4/12 are the lengths of the opposite and the adjacent of a triangle representing your roof pitch (see kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYXZgXlqjsqmoLs). If you want the degrees, you can use SOH CAH TOA to calculate that, using the TAN function (actually the arctan or tan-1). By my calculations, your roof would have a ~18.5° pitch.
