I took Chemistry via Distance Education. The two things I did differently than traditional schools do was (a) Focused on that subject exclusively. This allowed me to complete the courses in about a month each. Not easy, but this made it possible to take the final just a few days after the midterm, which made midterms a breeze; and. (b) Memorized the Periodic Table. This made it so much easier to work with all the formulas and equations, and make my general understanding so much clearer. After doing these two things, I really had no need for the telephone tutoring they offered. I did call in from time to time, just so they wouldn't start wondering whether I'd fallen off the face of the earth or the instructor wouldn't start feeling excessively lonely, but other than that, all I needed was my textbook and Study Guide they sent with the course. Yeah it's a bit overwhelming at times. I get this manic energy sometimes where I'm highly motivated to self study but I can't decide what to study. I just want to learn everything but that obviously isn't possible. When I am in this state I can get alot done if I decide on something but usually it is wasted energy.

I feel the same way! What I did to actually get rid of this energy waste by having to decide what to study all the time is by creating a plan. I have huge interests in sciences and mathematics as well as economy and so on. Since mathematics is the very foundation of all sciences I have devoted myself to studying mostly mathematics at first until I have a thorough grasp of calculus , proof-writing and statistics (relevant to interpret studies). Then it will be a lot easier to think logically and recognize structures even when attempting to understanding physics equations. Since chemistry doesn't require that much mathematics as physics (of course physical chemistry is another topic) I also study chemistry simultaneously. I have a few books that I am using to study both; but I am not deciding what to study and with which book. I am asking a random number generator (1 is chemistry/ 2 is mathematics) and then I choose the book by the same principle. @@jacobharris3002

"Chemical Structure and reactivity" By Wothers and Keeler is a really great book for first year-second year chemistry (bachelor's level).

I have a question. How many textbooks have you gone through from front to cover? Every textbook I have seems like it would take a a year or two or at least a few months to go through from front to cover if your also working through the problems so I''m just curious. If you don't finish a textbook how do you know when you're ready to move on to another book?

I recommend the textbook by Tro. Good explanations and plenty of practice problems, with great pictures/diagrams.

I got Tro, you're not lying, recommended by my chem prof in community college. Chang was unreadable, Tro took care of that.

This is a fantastic book. This book is great at providing examples and a strong foundation in chemistry, and it looks like it goes very in depth into some subjects. However, chemistry is a broad field with many different specialization. There are parts of chemistry not mentioned in the book. For example, most of modern analytical chemistry (FTIR, NMR, most of Chromatography, spectroscopy, etc...) is not included. Depending on the field of chemistry you want to specialize in, mathematics might also be useful. Knowledge like calculus, Fourier transform and group theory. (These are the only one which I know of which has an application in chemistry) If you want to become a master at chemistry, don't stop at this book. Things have progressed immensely since '87. And also do some lab work.

@@madman27985 If you're just starting out, (try to read the all general chemistry books before jumping to a chemistry field of your choice) For beginners, I would recommend For general chemistry: Chemistry & Chemical Reactivity, 10th Ed (2019), Kotz/Treichel (KT) Silberberg, Chemistry: The Molecular Nature of Matter and Change 2018, 8e Elements of Physical Chemistry, 7th Ed (2016), Atkins For analytical chemistry: Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry (9th Edition) by Douglas A. Skoog For Inorganic chemistry: Inorganic Chemistry 5th Edition by Gary Miessler For organic chemistry, I'm not very sure which book is great. maybe Organic Chemistry 8th Ed., John E. McMurry And for physical chemistry: Atkins' Physical Chemistry 9th Ed. by Peter Atkins , Julio de Paula Edit: if the general chemistry books are still too hard, you can try: Chemistry Matters GCE 'O' Level (2nd Edition)

As a physics major I was exposed to NMR through one of my lab courses. It is absolutely fascinating. I doubt I'll ever study it again except maybe for fun in my free time but that was unexpectedly my favorite lab in that course.

I don't think there are, but there should be statistics on how much the smell of any book contributes to your actual gaining knowledge from it. I think it would be a high ratio on avg. Some of them smell acrid and like household cleaners, so it makes me put it down for fear of lung damage. I had one blank journal that smelled like gasoline. But, if scientists could study odor paired with memory research to track which smells perform this overdue function and arrive at the right chemical compound, we could have books with the highest smell to knowledge transfer ratio known to man.

For me Chemistry doesn't become interesting until I understand the physics behind it. Without that I feel I'm just memorizing facts instead of actually learning anything. After I master quantum I feel like I'll finally be equipped to give Chemistry a go.
