Happy Birthday to the Southwest Corridor (opened May 4, 1987)!
To celebrate, TheMBTADog presents a reverse cab view ride on the Orange Line from Downtown Crossing to Forest Hills!
STATION STOPS:
Downtown Crossing (Washington)
Chinatown (Essex)
Tufts Medical Center (New England Medical Center)
Back Bay/South End
Massachusetts Avenue
Ruggles Street
Roxbury Crossing
Jackson Square
Stony Brook
Green Street
Forest Hills
Before the present day Southwest Corridor, there was a stone railroad embankment along the same corridor. There were railroad stations at Back Bay Station, Chickering, Roxbury, Heath, Boylston, Jamaica Plain, and Forest Hills. All of the Orange Line Southwest Corridor rapid transit stations were built near the sites of the railroad stations.
The Southwest Corridor was planned to be a highway extension to connect Route 128 with Interstate 95. The stone embankment and adjacent houses were demolished to make way for the highway. Residents protested against the highway and won. The highway project was canceled and the corridor was designated to be reused for the new Orange Line to replace the Washington Street Elevated. There is a sign about this outside of Roxbury Crossing.
Although not part of the Southwest Corridor, the MBTA decided to rename Washington to Downtown Crossing, and also rename Essex to Chinatown, with the opening of the new Orange Line. Essex also had a bad reputation because of the Combat Zone and needed to be rebranded.
New England Medical Center was originally to be called South Cove. It was renamed Tufts Medical Center in 2010. The Tremont Street side is referred to as Don Bosco because of the former school and is also located by the site of the Pleasant Street Incline.
The present day Back Bay/South End Station is the third incarnation of Back Bay Station. Before the Southwest Corridor, the original Back Bay Station was solely a railroad station with no subway connection, except for the Green Line at nearby Copley Square. A vestige of the original NYNH&H Back Bay Station can be seen next to the exits on Clarendon Street.
Massachusetts Avenue is very close to Symphony and is the closest subway stop for Boston Medical Center. Martin Luther King Jr lived in the apartment building near the station when he studied at Boston University, but this station was not here at the time.
Ruggles Street Station was intended to replace Dudley Street Station, but Dudley Square proved to be busy enough that Dudley Station could not be replaced. Ruggles is the closest Orange Line station to the Longwood Medical Area and is used by many hospital workers who ride the Commuter Rail. There are many bus routes at Ruggles. Ruggles is also the site of the South End Grounds and is within the campus of Northeastern University.
Roxbury Crossing is close to Dudley Square and John Eliot Square, the historic center of Roxbury, as well as Roxbury Highlands and Mission Hill. There are many nearby schools.
There is a vestige of the old railroad embankment near Roxbury Crossing.
Jackson Square is close to Egleston Square, which it replaced.
Egleston Square does not have a station anymore. Jackson Square also has bus connections and is close to Bromley-Heath, Hyde Square and Centre Street - Avenida de las Americas.
Stony Brook is the name of a major watercourse in Boston. The Boston and Providence Railroad was built along the valley of Stony Brook in 1834.
The railroad station here was called Boylston. The MBTA opted not to name this station as Boylston to avoid confusion with the Green Line station. There was a contest to see what name to give this station and the name "Stony Brook" won. There are a few pictures of ticket stubs on the platform at Stony Brook, one of which says "Boylston" on it as a reminder of the original railroad station that was located here. The Samuel Adams Brewery is near this station.
Green Street is just a block away from the elevated station of the same name that it replaced. It is also the site of the Jamaica Plain railroad station.
Forest Hills is the last stop with many buses that go to Roslindale, West Roxbury, Hyde Park, Mattapan and more. Arborway on the Green Line was supposed to make a connection at Forest Hills again, but the 39 bus took over and Green Line trolleys have not served Arborway since 1985. The Arnold Arboretum and Forest Hills Cemetery are notable nearby places.
There is also a park and bicycle path on the surface of the Southwest Corridor. The path begins right in front of Back Bay Station on Dartmouth Street and you can walk, jog or ride a bicycle all the way to Forest Hills and beyond. You can watch and listen to the Orange Line, Commuter Rail and Amtrak while you walk.
All stations on the Southwest Corridor also have artwork and monuments with poetry engraved on them.
