Alexander Courage wrote the theme without lyrics. Gene Roddenberry wrote them-not expecting them to be sung, but so he could be registered as the lyricist-and claim half the performance royalties. Gene was quoted as saying, "Hey, I have to get some money somewhere. I'm sure not gonna get it out of the profits of ." Courage left the show, doing incidental music in the second season, and scoring two episodes in the third. But never got over what he thought was Roddenberry's unethical conduct.
