Season 2, Episode 14: When Dr. Peter Levine began studying trauma in the 1970s, he noticed that humans react to stress differently than every other mammal. So, how did that discovery inspire his best-selling book Waking the Tiger? And what can learning about an animal’s response to trauma teach us about healing the wounds in our own minds?

I started this therapy and it was really helping. I got an injury and couldn’t afford the therapy sessions anymore. The medical bills were too much.I was paying $125 a session and doing two a month until the injury.I have insurance and they won’t pay for Somatic Experience. It’s truly sickening to find an therapy that helps and then denied it because of money.Any society that places profit above the health of their people is insane. I can’t recommend this therapy enough.I suffered a lot of violence as a small boy and so far this therapy has been the only thing to touch it. Good luck to everyone out there suffering from trauma.Prayers and hugs for you all.🙏🤗❤️

There is a book called "Healing Trauma", by Peter Levine. It's available on KZbin as a free audiobook. There are many exercises explained in it that you can try on your own. Best wishes :)

Unless you’re demanding work from a machine, you’re not allowed to enslave people to work for you. If people have to give their time and skills to you they are to be paid. Just because your parents decided to have a little fun & couldn’t support you does not entitle you to demand the slavery of another person. Your problems belong to you. It’s up to you to get them fixed. it’s not about “money” or “profit” these are people’s lives, time and expertise you’re demanding for free. Most of the doctors servicing you are probably using a good portion of the money they earn to pay back the loans they took out to Learn to service you.

Finding this information has transformed my understanding of my body and how it reacted to violence and abuse. It's not a stretch to say it may have saved my life.

I'm over the moon right now, I bumped into Levines book online few weeks ago but could not remember the title nor writer after loosing the online preview. Hearing his story took me back to one of the interesting and rich books I've previwed recently, placing an order right away! 😊

Thank you for airing this podcast.👏👏 Dr. Levine presents an easy to understand view of, and suggestions of moving through trauma. I can especially appreciate the body's natural shaking response. And any assistive guidance for therapists and/or survivors to help one embrace the transformation of true Healing.

The example of the rabbit and cayote, is different to trauma where there is prolonged exposure continual threat..so the body remains in that state and perhaps that time creates strong stubborn neuropathways.

Good episode... many concepts are similar in my emotional work. But while animals may store their energy in the body... for any opportunity to escape... humans store it in the subconscious MIND... in memory, and not just our bodies. Shock is a disruption. Shock is disabling. Shock knocks a person out. Shock is PARALYZING... An animal may FAKE DEATH, even if injured, as a survival strategy... shock a sheep it can fall over and be paralyzed and appear dead... people don't do that... unless to fool a BEAR!!! Humans don't always need to fall down and play dead when injured. Even Dr. Levine...did not play dead when hurt to look for escaping a predator.... though he was injured. The technique I discovered in 2009, gets at that subconscious, emotional content...the Emotional Charge.. and gets at the psychosomatic elements of trauma... this is what I do with my own PTSD. The 5 channels he mentions... are emotionally charged up aspects: Sensations, Images, Feelings, Emotions, etc... "Meaning" is then affected as an effect of that. Based on the emotional level a person ends up in...if that is stress...like his Rage..."Damn kid..."... or Anxiety... like "No place is safe"... and Depression..."I am undeserving"...because they FAILED to do something and feel guilty about it. "Undeserving of love...Deserving of punishment"...The meaning came out of the emotional level and state as a reaction. He had enough cognizance to stop that and put it towards conserving his energy, and his training and knowledge helped. But many people collapse and crash and burn, as there is no one there... we don't always have immediate help from the right people as he did... especially LATER!!!! That is when the trauma really forms, and the PTSD's DELAYED reactions kick in and become psychosomatic. There was a term when I was studying back in the mid 70s... that is.... "Traumatic Charge"... this would be, the ENERGY in, of, and behind the trauma. The technique I discovered works on this Emotional Charge component, and it works with... 'This is Trauma Charge"... as a concept... that can be done with the technique... I am a 12 year emotional researcher with PTSD. I live this on a daily basis, this is how I stop my episodes. By targeting my emotions, which are the source and cause of those signals...they can STOP... It is not the signal... it is the content IN, of and behind the signal. When he was talking about the lady and her deep anxiety issues... I knew I was looking at a psychosomatic event, and her symptoms were psychosomatic... Listen to my podcast on psychosomatic events, and how to get at them with the technique, there are many techniques that can get at this... mine does it by targeting the emotional disturbances that cause them.... give a listen: anchor.fm/steve-barham/episodes/Happiness-Is-No-Charge-0018---Psychosomatic-Events-eo81ro For PTSD issues...listen to this one: anchor.fm/steve-barham/episodes/Happiness-Is-No-Charge-0020---Target-PTSD-e10ns1f

Is the shaking not due to physical over exersion and or adrenaline rush ? Although still an interesting interview. I would have liked to hear...This is what you have to to when.. He never really said how he dealt with his accident. What was his thinking for the hour or two after it happened, in the ambulance, at the hospital ? Did he even go to hospital.

I have yet to hear an "expert" talk about the deep C-ptsd that weaves its way in randomly & destroys daily functioning. They always talk about it from the OUTSIDE. Pete Walker has a great book: "From Surviving to Thriving with C-ptsd". Pete talks about it from the INSIDE as he is a survivor & has learned to thrive.

He differentiates between domesticated animals and animals living in the wild. According to his observations, the latter get traumatised less often but it still depends on how much fear they are in. He talks about it in one of his books.
