I live in a city of over half a million people in Canada and as far as I can tell, only one church offers it here. I've watched some Novus Ordo masses on TV, some of them are still traditional with singing, but to my Orthodox ears, it's dull, plodding, and lacking the feeling of transcendence or warmth. As much as anything, I think a church service should feel like something reverent and special, not like day-to-day life but with Christian themes (Protestant churches are the worst for that, of course). There definitely seems to be more animosity from the Orthodox to the Catholics than the reverse, so I feel bad when Popes make overtures of kindness only to be met with hostility, yet at the same time I understand it. Francis has done some unusual things, but even John Paul II kissed a Quran, which is inexplicable to me.

Find an Orthodox church and go there. They haven't sold out to modernism. Greek Orthodox will sound the most ancient. Russian Orthodox is more like music from the 16th to 19th centuries (also very beautiful).

I had a similar experience with an ancient still functioning Benedictine monastery. As I walked through the alcoves, the sun beams shone through and the monks sang Gregorian chant and prayed from a hidden area. It was so peaceful. Time ceased . It was so pure and beautiful. God bless 😊

I listen to these chants . To sleep but to soak in, to do something just and to not close up completely. I listen to these chants to keep him with me still, and i only crack the door slightly with his welcoming lite still present. I listen to these chants thinking it will bring my step dad out of aftermath stroke conditions, for he is in hospice at his home. And it is a sad thing to see a mighty once man of 6.3 sometimes .4, at filled body and soul of good nutrients and things to make his body alive and well. That smiled and greeted every one every morning of his life , for this mighty man never needed an introduction for he was king where he reside, for a very very very long lifetime of day and nite.That now lays in a bed unable to walk those tall limbs that carried him everywhere, that is unable to feed himself, or even simply cleanse himself, that cant greet you anymore but he knows you are there, and he still has his smile and those captive brown eyes and blondish red hair. And his tone of voice is still present but of course his speech is kept at " some water" and " why". This is why i listen . Thank you Highlands Man . My brothers and sisters if someone got in him or on her a demon, on listening these HOLY SONGS continuously the demon will quit because: purity and impurity cannot stay in one place . For those who do not yet know the early original chants (Gregorian, Mozarabic, etc.) , this is a wonderful introduction and bridge. I hope it will interest you in finding and listening to early chant from the Medieval and Renaissance periods. Original chant is unadorned - only the voices, no electronic enhancements, no drones, no other instrument but the voice. It is also beautiful and deep. Pope Gregory who caused 'Gregorian' chant to be collected and written down) is believed to have stated that "To sing is to pray twice". Bless ALL the world.
