I like how up to the 2 minute mark the fractal seems to get more surreal and alien the deeper you get. Certainly I did not expect such complexity at lower levels from the great self-similarity of the beggining.

Five years late, but the reason it becomes more complex is simply because the video creator changed the fractal at that point to continue rendering smaller iterations as a Menger Sponge instead. That's why, for a period, there are squares among broken and cut-off triangular 'terrain', which then becomes simply squares as we leave the triangle iterations behind. Had he not done this, the self-similarly with triangles would have continued forever.
