The greater roadrunner is the biggest cuckoo bird running around in the American Southwest. There are plenty of these birds in Southern California and they are relatively brave in front of humans. I have seen these predators run around on roads and hop on backyard fences; one time while I was in Riverside I even saw one in a backyard eating a sparrow. They can run up to 32 kilometers per hour, more than the 24 kph I credit them with in the narration, and jump to catch flying prey. Coyotes can run to up 69 kph, and roadrunner bones have been found in their feces, so in this case life does not imitate art. It is true that coyotes are less maneuverable and cannot fly or fit into small spaces that roadrunners might be able to go into, but coyotes are much faster, can hunt in packs, and can match the jumping ability of the roadrunner.
True to their cuckoo form, the first to hatch within a clutch of 3-6 greater roadrunner eggs have a first-mover advantage and will hog up all the food and cause the younger siblings to starve if there is not enough food; sometimes the younger siblings will be fed directly to the older ones to ensure the survival of the older chicks.

Birds are actually dinosaurs. Both species have the same skeletal structures and also many birds have beaks similar to Oviraptor. Their stubby tail is from the dinosaur Epidepteryx and dinosaurs and birds posess feathers with similar colour actions. And ignore anyone saying “But since birds have beaks they are different species.” That’s not how evolution works. In order to be a completely different species, MANY of your traits have to be different. What do birds have? A beak, fused fingers and a stubby tail. That’s it.

@@thelonewolf6425 This also means that birds are reptiles which is cool. Crocodiles are more closely related to dinosaurs and birds than snakes and lizzards.

you know, I have roadrunners near where i sleep at night, (i am a homeless man in california) and coyotes too. I have watched them outsmart coyotes REPEATEDLY. they will run through overgrowth at extremely high speeds.. the will run straight up adobe (or just earthen poured materials). they will run straight up trees and run down the branches, sometimes upside down.. never seen a coyote catch one yet. the road runner is symbolic of Justice btw, and that is the meaning of the red and white mark behind its eye. it eats that which has a forked tongue. tons to say about these fantastic prehistoric chickens.

Good post. Informative. I have always admired these birds, tenacious and tough. Rattlers beware! Coyotes are no match in the real world, and so "Looney Tunes" had it right. Beep, beep! Hope you have found a home, a good woman and a soft pillow.

Grew up with these in New Mexico. As far as outwitting a coyote; it is entirely true as roadrunners can fly. They may not be able to fly very well, but they can reverse direction while running at full sprint by taking to the air to perch on a cactus which the coyotes will not mess with at all. Huge chamisa bush at the end of the drive of my childhood home was home to generations of these guys.

Beautiful footage and lovely narration. The eyelashes are the best! You don't mention where the birds are being kept. I'm thinking that due to one of the bird's damaged and deformed right foot, it is in a rescue?

If you look closely at the bird's right foot, it is deformed and missing the two toes that face front. It also limps when it moves. Roadrunners walk smoothly, this little one hops. Who knows how that may have happened, but the bird is obviously in some kind of rescue/retirement home. So, to set it free would sentence it to death because it likely can't move fast enough to catch prey or escape a predator.
@MrTachyon
@MrTachyon 3 жыл бұрын
@@cfidellmt ..Maybe it’s deformed from being in enclosure near humans and getting feet tangled in human hair like it commonly happens to pigeons in big cities.
