In this episode our crews recorded the entire trip of Metro Line 456 on its first day in operation after nearly thirty years in hiatus. From 7th Street/Metro Center Station in Downtown Los Angeles to Ocean Blvd/Long Beach Blvd in Downtown Long Beach.
Since January 24th till November 1st of this year, this route was identified as Metro Line 860, it served as an temporary express shuttle between Los Angeles and Long Beach while construction crews were remodeling all the stations along the Metro Blue Line corridor (Linton, 2019). Line 860 was very popular with riders who were satisfied with the direct non-stop express portion (Hymon, 2019).
During the three sequential grand re-opening A Line (Blue) community celebrations on November 2, 2019; Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia affirmed its commitment by keeping the express line in place for riders who wished to travel via freeway (TMN, 2019, 33-12).
Metro Line 456 will utilize the I-110 and I-405 Freeway's bypassing all of the A Line (Blue) stations until Wardlow Station in Long Beach proper. The total distance from Downtown Los Angeles to Downtown Long Beach on Line 456 is 24.3 miles or 39.1 km (Rome2Rio, 2019). The featured vehicle in this episode is a North American Bus Industries 60-BRT CNG (CPTDB, 2019).
From the first stop at 7th Street/Metro Center Station, Line 456 makes two local stops in Downtown Los Angeles before entering the I-110 and later I-405 freeways. Line 456 makes limited stops adjacent to A Line (Blue) Stations along Pacific Ave in the City of Long Beach (MTA, 2019). There will be continuous unedited video coverage from Downtown Los Angeles to Downtown Long Beach.
At the 04:00 mark you will see OCTA Route 721, formerly RTD Line 464 guiding Line 456 to dock, two old friends now operating in different agencies both going home.
The northbound trip of Metro Line 456 will be our next and final episode of the year. These are scenes of that afternoon.

It was interesting to still see the headsign displaying the 860, but when it said Not in Service, it said 456. Can’t wait to head back to LA soon on the northbound trip!

We appreciate the kind words OC Bus Fan! The rapid bus that displayed 860 in the intro was shot during our OCTA Route 721 (Southbound) ride-a-long. That was the only external shot of Line 860 that we have in our archives. The northbound trip of Line 456 will display 860 in Long Beach but display 456 in Downtown Los Angeles. Our last episode of the year will be on December 21st, stay tuned.

OMG! Im not sure if youre the record holder of the infamous LA Metro Challenge. Theres this big meetup every year where bus nerds ride EVERY line on the system map in 24hrs or less (record set in 1993). No rail/non-Metro bus agencies. Not even potty breaks! Took me 43.25 hrs nonstop. I dare anyone to try it!

@@jamesparson Parts of every line. It's all about transferring at the right stops and spending as little time waiting for the next bus as possible. *AND* it must be done on a weekday (to catch the few Metro rush hour lines too!) 23.5 hours is the record (1993). *My best was 46hrs 17min (2019)*

Line 456 operates only Monday thru Friday during rush hours. The bus was preparing for a wheelchair passenger. We had no idea why it took a longer than usual for a wheelchair pick-up but we suspect uneven pavement. The RTD cancelled the line in 1990 because of the new blue line train.

Metro has Rapid 760 that terminates at Long Beach Blvd Greenline Station. Maybe rapid 760 could go into Long Beach during rush hours congruently with Line 456.

I'm hoping line 456 will stay after the pilot period ends. The route is no longer running with the 60 ft buses but instead the 40 ft buses. Has ridership on line 456 been good or bad?

When we rode it on thanksgiving week for our northbound episode, it was just three passengers. We asked about the quick ride to downtown Los Angeles which by the way took us 40 mins, he said it was because of thanksgiving. Hopefully an enthusiast can let the community know about the ridership. Some mechanical issues with the wheelchair lift. The vehicle had to be restarted to jump start the motor on the lift. That is what we assumed but not entirely sure. Thank you for the comment. By the way, all new episodes will be on BitChute, please check us out there.
