Sometimes it is absolutely necessary to call people out on their ‘merde’ as Bette Davis would describe it. It all depends on the situation….Bowie definitely called out members of the public when they harassed him, invaded his privacy and space when he was out and about.

What you need to remember when watching this interview is that it wasn't as acceptable as it is today to be gay. Homosexuality had only been legalised eight years earlier, in 1965 (before that, you could go to prison for being gay in the UK). Russel Harty was gay, and in 1972 - just before he "retired to live in the US - Bowie had come out as gay in an interview published in Melody Maker, Britain’s leading music magazine ("I’m gay. And always have been, even when I was David Jones"). Russel Harty opens this interview by reminding Bowie that the last time they met, Bowie had an earring hanging from "either your left or right ear". This was a reference to Bowies self-proclaimed gayness - wearing an earring in the right ear was code for "I'm gay" - and the discussion it had sparked in the UK media. Some people believed that Bowie was claiming to be gay in order to be controversial and court publicity. Harty is ribbing Bowie with this comment, which is why Bowie ignores it and responds with "How are you Russel. It's nice to see you," In other words "don't go there." This opening jibe sets the tone for the rest of the interview, which essentially consisted of Harty trying to bait Bowie, in several instances with other oblique reference to Bowie's sexual orientation - which was really all Harty was interested in. Bowie was having none of this gay bitchiness, and "played it straight", forcing Harty to do the same. Harty was a dreadful interviewer, and he knew nothing about pop/rock music, let alone Bowie's music.

@zakmartin2 жыл бұрын
@@brucevair-turnbull8082 Yes, you are correct. The Act came into force in 1967. It was proposed in 1965 and it took two years to become law. I made a typo. As I said, this interview took place just eight years after homosexuality had been decriminalised. There was still a stigma attached to being gay. Bowie had walked back his Melody Maker admission and had reverted to his earlier position of ambiguity. I think he felt that he had overstepped the mark by allowing himself to be placed in an existing category, and he may also have felt that his admission to being gay in MM had alienated many of his straight fans. Harty was taunting him over non-committal stance and basically challenging him to either confirm that he was gay or admit that he was pretending to be "possibly gay" to court controversy and get media headlines (and possibly attract a gay following).

Shortly before the interview, the dictator Generalissimo Francisco Franco of Spain had died, which was HUGE news. Bowie was asked to delay the interview so LWT could go on with the story, and he said no, he would do it when scheduled or not at all. LWT blinked.

I m from Spain, big news in WhatsApp way? The english supported the coup in 1936 from the beggining. Churchill supported Franco, and Hitler bombing civil population at a ratio of 1000 persons at day. And I can continue forever. Franco was supported by the USA, UK, and France. In the thin White duke era Bowie showed his interest in fascism, Hitler as a rock star, etc ... It World be interesting to know the opinión of both about the fascist dictator Who commited crimes against humanity for 40 years. Better than Bowie s Mother.

I really like this interview...it is a time capsule of event's of that time... I am glad Harty interviewed with the questions he put to him... questions about his mum..bay city rollers... best one was "england is different to when you were here a couple of years and Bowie came up with this "Thursday is different to last Thursday but would miss it if it did not come after Wednesday"...that is gold... also when this interview was broadcast, Franco , the then president of spain had passed away. They wanted to cut the interview to mention this but Bowie would not relinquish the Saterlite feed for this very interview...Bowie was a hardarse... many people are upset with Harty but I would not have this any other way... pre spinal tap..

Fun fact: back in 1975, you had to book satellite time like this in advance because the technology hadn't caught up nearly with the demand. On the day this interview occurred, the Spanish government wanted to use the satellite link-up to announce the death of Generalissimo Francisco Franco - but Bowie refused to give up his spot, so they had to wait for this.

To think, the return he was planning on making was...the return of The Thin White Duke. He said he was coming back as himself, and in a sense, he did. He was in such a dark place in his life that The Thin White Duke was just all of the demons he was battling personified. He did come back as himself, because The Thin White Duke was always there. It's some deep shit. Station to Station is my favorite song AND album by Bowie, but I'm glad he was able to recover from that dark period.
