My uncle was a helicopter instructor for the Navy back in the early 1960’s. When I was 17 years old, I took a flight class and learned how to fly an airplane. I flew from Round Rock to Georgetown and back for a final grade. Soon as he learned that I could fly a plane, my uncle sat me down in a kitchen chair and taught me how to fly a helicopter. That was in 1976. This video just brought all that knowledge back to the front of my brain. 👍🏻👍🏻

@@gibson5056 I researched a few aviation schools that had helicopter in my area. There was one real close to me but the one I chose was a 45 minute drive because the instructor was one of the top rated in the country. I got my private V.F visual flying license just a week ago. It usually takes about 6 months but I had the time to take extra classes during the week so I was able to get all my flight hours in in a little over 4 months. To me the actual book part of it was a little harder. If you're really interested there's some great simulators for helicopters there's one that goes for about $800 and it's very realistic I'm not quite sure what the name of it is but again if you're doing a little research you'll find them. I'm going to buy my own but when I started off my instructor gave me one he never used and I put a lot of hours on it.

Oh yeah. Licensed, trained and time always makes it look easy. No delusion for me, but at least now I might be able to at least try to survive if I had too in an absolute emergency if in one and all was lost but a noble try. Door isn't a big deal. Pilot/co-pilot are strapped in. If it's hot outside, the ajar door ventilates the cockpit. We do the same thing with small airplanes while we're going through the checklist, taxiing, etc. The "before takeoff" checklist covers making sure the doors are shut.

Never flown a heli but it looks to be exactly as I'd imagined. You've got a joystick (sidestick) and "rudder" pedals, but instead of adjusting the thrust horizontally, you do it vertically in a heli.

W goes up, so you need to use the mouse to point the front of the helicopter down to move forward. S goes down. A rotates left, D rotates right. Q moves right, and E moves left. ABACABB is the blood code if you want to see blood when you fire your rockets and machine guns.

I've just started my journey to become a pilot. I don't know what the rules are in your country but here in America, I have to learn how to fly fixed Wing aircraft before I can even attempt to get a rotor aircraft certification. What always gets me is I look at the throttle control and I don't instinctively think up/down. I had to assign one of the side sliders on my Winwing Orion 2 so I don't get confused. The other problem is the slightest turn can make it go crazy, and it's bad enough when you're not getting shot at. I don't think I'll be flying a chopper IRL any time soon! @@TheMicroPilot

Thank you, it's really kind of you to say! When the Carb is fully primed any excess fuel simply falls out onto the ground as it's an updraft carb meaning you can't flood the engine. Also yes, the door is open slightly kept from fully opening by a really high tech bit of kit (a string haha). The vents in the cabri aren't great so you can fly with the door slightly open or even completely off if you want.

David, flying a helo can be likened to patting your head and stomach in different directions, whilst drinking a glass of water and reciting the alphabet lol! My dad and his buddies flew taildraggers, in some go arounds can be busy, balancing the aeroplane, it's archaic engine systems etc - making 'landomatic' tri gear look very easy.

I promise you all, in reality this is nowhere near as simple as it looks in this excellent video. Helicopter controls are minutely sensitive in a way which cannot compare with fixed-wing flight. Watch the continual movement of his right hand on the stick. That was the most shocking for me during the few lessons I had; you are continually inputting tiny movements when hoovering and moving slowly. I described it to friends as feeling like you're controlling the most slippery vehicle imaginable. The other surprise for me was the delay on the controls and the way they catch up with your input, and it's also a little different with each control. On top of that as described in the video, when you push forward with the stick you need to counter the aircraft's yaw to the left by giving it a little right peddle (a phrase I heard so much I'm sure instructors must have nightmares around this phrase!). Hovering, as a learner, I used to describe to friends as being the hardest video game you'd never play! Interestingly, having only taken eight lessons, I never got to land. It's by far the best experience I've had, and while I never went any further I remember the experience like it happened last week; the lessons were over 13 years ago now. I described the overall experience as being the most incredible fairground ride imaginable.

Harry good question! It's mainly about how much you pull the collective. The more you pull it the more power the blades need to keep spinning at the required RPM. The governor automatically controls the throttle (twist grip on the collective) but we are also trained to use the throttle when flying manually in the event of a governor failure.

Great explanation and demo... but you never showed what you do in terms of power (throttle) settings. It seemed like it is set to some power level, and then all up & down is done with the collective? So you never change the power (e.g. RPM's) as part of the flight control inputs? Can you clarify? Thx!

Hi Mike, that's a good question and maybe I should have clarified that a little better. The governor automatically alters the power for me when I demand differing amounts of power when I pull the collective. We are trained to used the throttle in case of a governor failure but normally it does it for us.

How to fly a helicopter... Don’t. Helicopters don’t fly, they beat the air into submission, and there’s plenty of windows so you can watch the air reach up and smack you. They fall “with style”, and consistently beat emergency crews to the scene of the crash by at least 30 minutes. The fan on top is just that, a fan, designed expressly to keep the pilot cool. When it stops turning, you can watch the pilot start to sweat. FI here. 😉

I love helos - but they're really NOT airframes, just a collection of spare parts, flying in close formation, and all held together by The Jesus Nut. So named, because if it ever comes off the threaded shaft in-flight, you scream "Oh, Jesus!" and get an answer, very quickly.

Thats cool, those are the mechanical ways to controll a helicopter, but to actually fly it, i think we need to know what those little round things with needles in them are and why. When I went up in a bell 47, the pilot asked if I wanted to hover the helicopter, I said yes, so... he let me take controll of it, sitting 50 feet above the west east tarmac at the Burbank Airport , as I started hovering it, he was shocked and said it took him 21/2 years to do that, and asked how I knew how to do it, even though it's my first time flying a helicopter, I told him, all my family is in the aircraft industry, my uncle's a pilot who was the first person in the world to own a still classified COBRA JET. SO I UNDERSTAND A FEW THINGS, THEN I SHOWED HIM THAT I GRIPPED THE CYCLIC ALMOST BELOW THE HAND GRIP WHICH GAVE ME MORE CONTROLL. SINCE THEN, IVE BUILT SEVERAL TYPES OF AIRCRAFT, AND THATS WHERE DRONES COME FROM.

A lot of automatic coordination, not thinking about every move. Kind of like riding a motorcycle it seems, where you are automatically shifting, clutching, giving it gas, balance, but you’re not consciously thinking of every reaction. Im not a pilot, but to me i think i could relate it to a session rubbing your head in a circular motion and your stomach in an opposite circular motion. While you move your feet from left to right with bent knees in a sitting position. Than twitch your eyes from right to left and pretend your talking to the traffic control guy, until you're in control of each independent movement Then one can know if that's a thing for them.

Remember despite all the things you should perfect to be a good helicopter pilot in terms of really great maneuvers normal approaches, steep approaches, shallow approaches, run on landings, hovering, emergency maneuver recovery like VRS recovery and great auto rotations and hover autos and really great navigation and fancy radio calls to pass check rides etc. What makes a good flight? Someone hands the controls to you the anti torque pedals, the collective, the cyclic, and you do the flying and get back alive. No damage. You are doing fantastic. Its all good to learn. Screw the check rides and tests. Forget the tower being on you about perfect instructions read back. I mean not really all that stuff is important in the long run. Someone handed you the controls. Put their life in your hands. And you handled it like a boss. Nothing is more important. People get the same hours from you that you do from them. Funnest 93 hours of my life have so far been flying the Robinson. Nothing can be traded for the feeling of knowing that I survived all those hours and did much better obviously on some flights than others but made it through and with the person with me as well. 100% its you 100% never forget that

It’s funny I had a dream I was flying a helicopter 🚁 So, I wanted to see if I was right about the controls. A bit more complicated tian I thought but not too bad and I was close. I was in the Army and you just never know, so it’s good to have some basic knowledge. The pilots in the Army flew Blackhawks I was on, they called it the Porche of the sky, because they could turn on a dime‼️😎 Never got to fly in an Apache those were really awesome, but that’s more likely for eliminating hostiles when I was in Iraq and possibly surveillance and reconnaissance. I was only ever transported from place to place in Blackhawks and chinooks, the double bladed helicopter, which was really fast the Blackhawk could barely keep up with it because obviously with two rotors it was way faster.‼️😎👍 nice video

I sure would love to go on a whirly-bird ride sometime. Have always been excited with choppers and the sound they make. Flying in or Piloting a Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane while lifting something heavy would be most exciting, as well as an Apache and firing the guns. Both would be top tier experiences for me. 😎👍

I like the way these controls are in this helicopter. I still like to be in the left seat. The controls in the Robinson helicopter see all wrong. I like the cyclic between my legs and the collective on my left side as I sit in a helicopter on the left side (Captain Side).

@@TheMicroPilot I have watched the start up procedure on the turban helicopters so many times I have it about memorized. I have a friend that flies the Citation. He says a lot of things you had to do manual are now automatic. You still need to know what is happening in what order to know what is going on.
