Is it really a "country song?" Lowell was a So-Cal boy who probably never drove a truck. There's no pedal steel guitar, a fiddle, a banjo, or a mandolin. It's more like a folk song other than the Floyd-Cramer-esque piano work. Oh well. The best loved Christmas song was penned by a Jewish man, and the trump guitars, etc. are made abroad.

The best American band of the 1970s. Most rock critics who heard their albums and saw them in concert were mightily impressed, and said so in print, but these guys deserved far more commercial success than they received. Was a total absolute crime that none of their single releases in the 1970s made the Top 40 (actually, IIRC, I don't think any of their 70s singles even broke into the Hot 100).

@paulkelly154 No, none of their 70s singles made the Billboard Hot 100. Yes, many FM stations played their albums but, unfortunately, their 45s didn't chart.

They never achieved commercial success because their obvious borrowing of George Clinton's 'Parliament Funkadelic' style, was found to be unpalatable by us people in the know.
@MichaelThompson-rv9ox13 күн бұрын
Great tune and we all knew the song, but the radio station in my small Midwestern town would not play a song about weed, whites, and wine. Advertisers would probably pull their spots. But, you could definitely buy the album and listen while hitting the steam roller.

They started a Warner Bros tour of the UK in the early 70s somewhere near the bottom of the bill because the UK promoters had never heard of them. By the end of the tour they were effectively top of the bill because none of the other acts on the tour would go on after them.

Lowell George had a voice like honeydew vine water. And taken so soon because of drugs. So pointless. Mitch Hedberg, Lenny Bruce, Belushi, Hendrix, Joplin, Petty, etc. Drugs offer so little of real value and these people gave so much and had so much more to give. We were lucky to have them and I wish they could have remained with us much longer.
