I explain jazz songs like this one to my friends all the time. Its a conversation. The first part is the topic. Everybody plays the written song.. and then after everybody's played it the solos are the different musicians "commenting" on it with their own style. So they all play, then the solos, then they all play the topic again and its over. Its a conversation and each musician brings their own personality and thoughts to it.

The solos are improvised in Jazz. This song was performed by the Quintet except for some added trombones at the end. But the concert featured the quintet with augmented Orchestra. Quintet personal: Miles - Trumpet John Coltrane - Tenor Sax Wynton Kelly - Piano Paul Chambers - Bass Jimmy Cobb - Drums

11:58 Miles was the bandleader, and he wrote the main theme (jazz cats call it the "head") of the tune -- it's only really a few chords -- the soloists each take their turn improvising over the chords (the "changes" in jazz cat speak) -- so no he didn't write their solos or anything like that but it's still a Miles tune

Miles Davis and David Bowie. To me those two men represent the best of what music can be as an art. They both lived to create and both took amazing risks that changed the face of music more than once.

@@davisworth5114 I didn't say anything about "playing a line", I said "emulate". You sure he never played to Bebop? Jammed with Miles? I've read interviews for decades and can hear what is referred to with my musical ears. Just read what his engineers said.

Miles was best known for his horn (trumpet) but he was very much a complete music man. He was the writer. However the saxophone 🎷 player was John Coltrane. He wrote his own solo into this piece. My uncle was a jazz musician . He had no traditional livingroom furniture in his apt. Instruments of every kind lined the 4 walls and in the center was a drummer's stool. When I was 7 he'd sit me right there to help the band keep time during their jam sessions and practice sessions. He played trumpet 🎺 too. He was a Miles Davis and John Coltrane admirer. He played the Boston MA and Manhattan NY circuits in the 60s and 70s. You look something like him but his afro was enormous. 💥👑🥂

Miles wrote, the melody, after that the players improvised on the basic chord progressions. Yeah, the baritone sax solo was John Coltrane, one of the best sax players and jazz musicians ever in the history of ever. One of Miles greatest traits was hiring great up and coming back up musicians, which only complimented Miles own greatness.

Jazz is the essence of cool. The sax player was The Train--John Coltrain--who became another monster of jazz, like Miles Davis. If you really want to understand jazz, do yourself a big favor and find a copy of the PBS miniseries, "Jazz-A Film By Ken Burns." It traces the roots of jazz from gospel (call and response), Caribbean music, Creole music, the blues, slave chants, and minstrel shows. All thrown together in the neighborhoods of New Orleans, where it was blended, mixed, and massaged until it came out as this wonderful, uniquely American sound. Then it follows it's evolution up through the 90s. It really is a great program and you will be glad you watched it. PEACE

Album was originally released in 1959. Though Miles gets the writing credits for all the songs, it wasn't unusual for the other band members to go uncredited for any ideas that might have been used. Standard practice back in the day. If i'm not mistaken, the sax solo features John Coltrane, legendary tenor saxophonist who died waaaaay too early at age 40. Here he is doing the standard "My Funny Valentine" kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3yol6yOhdlsZ7c

Re size of band, what you hear on this song is mainly his sextet (trumpet, tenor sax, alto sax?, piano, bass, drums), from the "Kind of Blue" album, but not sure about alto, as I didn't see Cannonball Adderley. For other songs in this broadcast, I believe, Miles used a full big band, with multiple trumpets, trombones, and saxes.

So this song first appeared on "Kind of Blue" which was released in 1959. Considered by many as the best Jazz album ever recorded. This live version was different due to the trombones playing some fills later in the song. Also Cannonball Adderly wasn't with the band at this time but was on the original studio recording. So John Coltrane played the Tenor Sax solo you liked. Wynton Kelley was playing the piano, Paul Chambers played the bass and I believe Jimmy Cobb was the drummer. Coltrane has his own bands before and after his collaboration with Miles. Coltrane was one of if not the greatest musicians of the 20th century. Sadly he passed from Liver Cancer in 1967 at age 40. Miles gather great musicians over the years and whn in the studio would present ideas and have the (usually great) musicians in the studio take the groove and being their own genius to the table. For some Coltrane, try Blue Trane kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqG9eYiMn7asmqs

@@michellezewe6148 So I listened to In a Silent Way a lot, Bitch's Brew I found less accessible. Enjoyed Tracks like Miles chases the Voodoo and John McLaughlin a lot. I like it more now than I did then. The Live Fillmore recording was very good also. I listened to a lot of Jazz Fusion from his side men, Mahavishnu Orch, Return to Forever, H Hancock, Weather Report more than Miles during the 70's. Really liked Agharta and Pangaea though,

This is a lesson in Jazz smokers: the rhythm section can't take smoke breaks when the song is going on; everyone else can smoke break all the time as long as you're not solo-ing. Only Rashan Roland Kirk can take a smoke break and play at the same time [unfortunately not featured in this smoke break video].

You hit it on the head when you make a comparison to a guitar. When electric guitars started being used, the musicians could use guitar to emulate horns because of the different tones electric guitars could achieve.

Why does my lack of music knowledge or my experience with this song bother you so much to the point where you have to be mean to someone you don’t care about. You could’ve explained teach or just not say anything but you chose to be negative for no reason. So I shall respond yea I probably curse too much Also I’m probably the corniest person you’ll meet and I love that I never assume I’m cool or whatever I never claimed to be a critic or a musician so why would I know anything I’m just listening to music. But regardless of your mean comments I’m glad you woke up today I hope you wake tomorrow and maybe the next person you comment on your a little more understanding. So with that be safe I wish you nothing but good to you and your family. ✌️ Davis never heard that name it’s pretty cool. 🤷‍♂️ this is me.
