Great summary. I have owned a 2007 r56 s for 15 years and experienced a few of the common problems. Its undeniable that the n14 engine has its issues but there are many factors that contibute to its reputation. BMW's original Long Life oil change intervals got many engines off to a bad start with some suffering up to 20,000km between oil changes under Mini service plans. Add to this the tendacy to burn some oil, the difficulty in reading the standard dip stick, the weak original timing chain tensioner, and the way in which these fun cars are typically driven and you have a recipe for long term disaster.

a rattle on start up can be misdiagonosed as the timing chain when it is actually the oil pump chain and is nothing to worry about

I had an R50 for 11 years. Truly a Concours car. Last year I bought my dream car, a R56 JCW. I absolutely love it. I've been made aware of the issues these engines have had, and the best advice my mechanic told me was to keep the oil topped up. They drink approx 1 litre for 1000 miles.

Be careful over filling it because that’s what I Did to mine and over heat it

I have a 2007 R56 S that I bought new. Engine was replaced in 2017 at 105,000 due to a piece of metal getting into a cylinder. I elected to get a factory remanufactured engine. It was expensive but to me worth every penny. Now at 168,000 miles it runs better than the first engine did. It was built with the improvements added to the later engines. Oil usage is about like yours. I always top it off if it's down around half a quart. 38+ per US gallon on the highway. So I'm keeping it for as long as I can. I can do some maintenance of it myself. What color is your JCW? My S is Astro Black with the white top and mirrors.

If you’re looking at a r56 over 50,000 miles definitely want the timing chain done, make sure you check your oil at least once a week, the eat oil like crazy.

I've owned my 2009 R56 going on nine years now. I've only had to update the cooling system and replace the timing chain tensioner. It now has a little over 60k miles and only takes 1 quart between oil changes but I do change the oil every 3000 miles...

I have a R56 2007 mini cooper N12 engine with 135.000 miles and the chain has been done once. In it's entire life it had 1K5 in engine replacement parts. The N12 engine does have the turbo or the direct injection and seems to not suffer the isseus of the N14. The only thing we do is check the oil once every week or 2 weeks cuz they eat oil. And replace the chain every 50.000 miles (as preventive maitenance)

mine is a 2012 R56 S with the little 1.6 litre turbo petrol Peugeot BMW N18 engine. Lovely little car. I love it to bits. They are a bit hard to look after properly in India but we manage thanks to nice US websites like Pelican Parts and ECS Tuning and Mini Mania who provide first class parts.

Ok fun to drive , looks good but overall unless you know someone who knows how to work on them or you do , my recommendation is to pass . I had a great little 2007 Turbo with about 75m , well maintained , but always a little something-- the transmission went down ( luckily I had a warranty) but getting a replacement at that time was very difficult and took a while ( really too long ) due to availability. Maybe newer one are better .

I actually owned both R53 and R56 versions. I must say that the R56 is way more fun to drive and actually feels much faster. I still own the R56 witch feels more refined but defiantly not as fun....

I have a 2010 automatic and I'm soooo sorry I bought this car. I don't know where the oil goes. Its NOT on the dip stick bc you can't read it.. I have 2 that I bought. Oh the AC doesn't get cold. I've had it ad AAA 3 times. They said it's a BMW computer thing. I love cars ( I'm down to 5) 1988 560 SL, 1080 MGB, 1997 Wrangler TJ, 2000 Wrangler TJ, vespa, HD, G650, etc I bought it for my granddaughter I thought it was safe ?!?!

Sorry to hear about the problems you’ve been having but a massive thumbs up for your car collection 👍 Yes BMW specialists are the best place to take this generation Mini as so many systems are unique to BMW vehicles

R56 turbo oil supply banjo fails, leaks oil onto hot turbo, very difficult to replace $$$$$. Oil level dipstick is brown plastic at level indication area. You don't need to be too clever to figure how dumb that choice is for checking the oil that is also brown.

I'll give you all a very brief buyer's guide for this car... Don't! Get something else! My R56 has the supposedly "more reliable" N18 engine, and I've had over 4 grand in engine work alone over the first 2 years of ownership. Excluding other items. Save your pennies for a little longer and get a 3rd gen Cooper S, or an MK7 Fiesta.

@@AlexisRodriguez-yv6sf The 2nd gen genuinely is! I'm on forums and in groups, and there are maybe one or two lucky folks - everyone else has dealt with chain failures, HPFP failure, thermostat housing failure, the list goes on. They're just terrible cars. 3rd gen is way better!
@AlexisRodriguez-yv6sf11 ай бұрын
@@MiMicheIIei believe you but I myself on the other hand know about 8 people to be specific that own a second gen mini too and only one of them has had a major issue and it wasn’t the timing chain. The first generation is trash but the second generation with the n18 are more reliable but only IF you’re really on it with the maintenance. Minis aren’t for everyone. If you don’t know how and when to service it then yes you’re going to have problems but I guess I’m just one of them lucky ones 😊
