I'm in Houston and use grow bags for almost everything right now. I have had horrible luck with the black bags becoming mini ovens, but tan bags are available in most sizes. They cost a few cents more each but it isn't a large amount. The tan ones are much, much better in terms of not drawing in so much heat and my water needs have been very reasonable.

I learned the hard way that topping puts your peppers back a month or two. I do remove the bottom leaves, they tend to grow upwards after I do. Btw, there's videos on KZbin of fireworks for dogs to get them adjusted to it and there's Thunderstorm videos. I did that with my dog and she would sleep through thunderstorms and fireworks. I did the same thing with babies crying and she had no reactions to loud baby crying either.

The Millennial Gardener I just found you and LOVE you! I was a young child in elementary school Garden Club and now retired and getting back to it! I've watched a lot of videos but you have been the one I am able to understand the best. You are very thorough and have been SO very helpful. Just watched your pepper & tomatoes vids. Learned a lot and ran right outside to prune the tomatoe. ALMOST was going to prune the pepper plant but decided not to after listening to your reasons no need to. I also made a list of fertilizer products I def need. Again - thank you! SO glad I found you! And I told my daughter in law to check you out as she is just getting into gardening. Bye for now from Northern Michigan

I found myself using about 8 gallons of water for all my pepper and other vegetable plants, so I switched to a hose-end sprayer to apply the solution. Its much easier. Here in west central Florida, with the extra heat, I water 3 times a week on an automated water system and then once a week, I apply the fertilizer solution over the bone meal and granular fertilizer, but I have to be careful with too much fertilizer due to the heat, so I usually prep the plants in good soil with bone meal added, then just use the liquid application every two weeks. My over-wintered peppers usually produce in Spring, then the newer plants come on, so it's like succession sowing.

@sherrymckee130 I put the pots under my covered patio. The temps got into the low teens for about a week. Our patio is U shaped and covered, so my husband draped a tarp over the opening and put a heater in there. They were planted Spring of 23, and they look rough, but are starting to sprout new growth and are already blooming!

You could also put them in a garage if temps get too low. As long as they're above freezing, they stay outside on the patio.

You can get dale something called a "thunder vest or lighting vest" I forget which one it's called but you put it on your pup when it's gonna storm and it's comforting to the dog. My daughter had to dog sit a friend's dog for a couple weeks that got really scared during storms, she would tear up her crate and bust out. The dog was a pittie that was terrified of storms. I told her to get this vest for the dog and it worked. She would sleep right through the storm or just lay down . The owner was so happy I figured out what to do about the nervous energy the dog got during storms because she had once had to replace a bathroom door the dog chewed through while she was out running errands. Also I think it has something to do with the electricity in the air or the barometric pressure dropping.

My Lab/Husky mix dog hated thunderstorms and fireworks. He would never be at ease until I found by putting him in a bathroom with no windows in the middle of the house, turn on the exhaust fan, put in a radio then turn the light off and close the door and all was fine when the storms were gone or the fireworks were over. Afterwards he would come out, wag his tail, follow me around the house and outside to go to the bathroom and every now and then he would get a treat if he wanted one. The storms and fireworks have a high pitched sound most dogs hear and get upset about. Drown out the sound and all is good.

Hey... long time lurker first time commenting... I live in a side by side duplex with very little yard, and what yard I have is very shaded by big trees. We've been growing in grow bags and containers for a couple years now, placing them in the areas that get the most sun, like our driveway. This is the first year we've tried peppers and they are doing AMAZING! We live in Nova Scotia, Canada and have been having torrential rain followed by scortching sun, so those in ground gardens of my neighbours are not faring as well as our container/grow bag garden. Thanks so much for all your information, I've learned so much that I've put into practice from watching your channel. I appreciate your knowledge. :)

I wouldn't fertilize them quite as much. Last year, I followed your tips and found that I got lots of leaves but fewer fruit on my peppers in grow bags. This year, I'm adding granular fert about once in _6 weeks,_ and liquid fert about monthly. Stockier plants, greater yield.

It's been a strange year, for western PA and much of the north east, thanks to the wildfires in Canada. We spent much of June and early July with air quality warnings and a persistent haze. On the down side, many of my "hot weather plants" have been slow growing, but on the plus side, my "cold weather crops" are still going strong. I'd been giving my containered peppers the water soluble fertilizer, but hadn't thought about the solids. I'll start doing that more frequently.

1:07, I definitely had fun watering my bell peppers twice a day during the summer last year. Even watering them a lot in the morning just wasn't enough to keep their leaves from drooping later on in the afternoon. I just heard you mentioning the pepper plants are perennials; I realized that when my three peppers were still producing into January until I had a light freeze that destroyed them. They would otherwise still be alive right now.

Awesome information. Love your style of delivery! Just started to garden this year. I put 3 chili pepper plants in 2G containers. They haven't been growing as much as I'd hope. I think I made the container mix TOO DENSE. The water gets logged in even though the drainage is OKAY but I think they'd prefer something airy. I also cut off two lower branches to propagate and they're not doing so hot. I think I should have left them on the main plant! My tomatoes are doing fair however! I will learn for next year. Bell peppers are one of the more difficult peppers to grow. They have some of the longest ripening times and lowest yields because of their large size. I don't grow them anymore, because I find the bell peppers in the store acceptable quality and I grow more prolific varieties that I can't get anywhere else. Giant Marconi is a pretty good substitute for stuffing, and I love the sweet banana peppers in salads.

In New Mexico and I ended up having to out up a shade for my babies during the summer. They looked rough and the summer sun gets intense. Just got some grow bags and cant wait to see how they do. Will definitely fertilize more too. Thanks!

I have no trouble growing capsicums in hard clay, so I've always cut potting soil with dirt to save on the amount of potting mix needed to fill a large pot. I also find that the added clay is much better at moisture and nutrient retention, which is helpful in my searing hot climate. I understand some people cannot get free dirt, but some people can but don't realise it's an option.

Oh yes. They will grow 5-7 years if you let them. Some grow even longer. There are capsicum species that can live decades.

Oh yes you can I had Blue Corbra chile super hot 🔥🔥 Looks like Thai chiles. I had it for 2 years in the ground I picked it daily and it flowered daily lol and loaded daily. I never fertilized or cared for it just good old water. That thing can even take 118 degrees heat. I started pruning it because it got too tall and bushy then it started to die it died. I pulled it out threw it away. Now I have like 15 or more of them grew from seeds dropped lol.

I do upholstery and canvas work. I made my own mesh grow bags from Pfiferteck white mesh. I line the inside with bamboo sheath, pieces of bamboo or banana leaves. This helps hold worm castings in. I run worms and compost in my bags and keep them in a flood tray. They never get cooked or dried out and have a perfect biosphere. Also wood ash is a perfect phosphorus and potassium supplement.

I live in Greece and like to grow chili peppers. This year it has been super hot. 100 degrees almost every day. Today it is 104 degrees. Most of my peppers are OK in containers, but the Cayenne peppers are not and they don't look good even with plenty of water. I will move them to a spot with a little shade and see how they do.

I'm in zone 4b & other than some pest pressure early in the season (managed by introducing live ladybugs to the plants), I have found peppers to be surprisingly resilient & easy/hands off to grow. Even the hot pepper plants that got badly sunburned when I wasn't patient enough with the hardening off process & were left in 1gal nursery pots, written off as a loss have completely bounc d back & are absolutely pumping out pods!! I've also got 4 heirloom bell pepper plants in a 10gal fabric pot and they are Thriving with little to no intervention beyond occasional feeding and daily watering. At least a dozen peppers on each plant & putting out new flowers daily--and I didn't get them outside until mid June because of a cool, late spring. To be fair, since things warmed up, this is our consistently hottest summer in recorded history, so they're loving all the sun & humidity--but this is by far my most successful year for peppers & I cannot wait for them to start ripening up! I'll be growing several more varieties next year!

I’m in Delaware and the weather has been horrible. Getting no rain then 3-6 inches dumped at once. With my clay soil, it’s not good. Only my cucumbers, watermelons and luffa are thriving. Starting peppers and tomatoes over in containers

These are great tips. The only thing I didn't know about was the fertilizer. My most high yielding pepper plants are in 3 gallon pots but some are smaller but still grow fruit. As a first time gardener I am most proud of these guys.
