@@KimmieAbbasServant no, it isn't true. You can plant whatever you want together. Some plants make better companions than others, because some plants are viney and will climb over and crowd out other plants, so you need to keep that in mind. You can also have problems with shade if you plant tall plants in front of the sun and they block light to smaller plants, so you have to keep sun orientation in mind. You also need to keep in mind that if you plant lots of squash plants together, that will draw in squash-related insects, because you're creating an all-you-can-eat buffet of similar species, so you need to be prepared for that. However, there is nothing "toxic" about it. Just be smart about planting so you don't mix plants that will choke each other out or produce too much shade.

It depends on your zone. If you don't get frost until late October or later, you still have time to grow an early variety. You'll want to push them pretty hard with a water soluble fertilizer high in nitrogen, though. You need to get them tall and green ASAP.

I’m in SC Ks, 7a according to the new zone map, and I grew bulbing onions last winter and they did great! We even had a deep freeze for 10 days in January. I started them from seed in July and transplanted in November and harvested in May. Some were the size of a softball!

I have already started some onion seeds as well to transplant in the fall to overwinter! I put onions that didn't grow very large from last year's seeds back in the ground last fall and they did way better than seeds started mid winter indoors and transplanted out early spring! I'm in lower mainland BC Canada. So yeah, to someone else trying bulbing onions in different ways! 😊

I’m in north central Alabama. It is time to start shifting to a fall garden in my area. I have potatoes and Brunswick Cabbage that have sprouted, and I am waiting on Danvers Carrots to sprout. Tomorrow I will sow seeds for golden beets. I have turnip seeds on order; as soon as they arrive, I will sow them too. The last of my zucchini plants has laid flat, and is ready to remove. The beds I use for planting summer squash will be used for sowing seeds for cauliflower and broccoli in about two weeks. I have three tomato plants with ripening fruit. As soon as they are done, I will dig out the raised beds and move them to a new location that will give them more sunlight in the fall and winter, and shade in late spring and summer. After moving the raised beds, I will sow seeds for parsnips and another batch of beets. In September, I’ll sow seeds for Pak Choi, Yellow Heart Winter Choy, Tatsoi, and radishes. October is garlic month, and then the cycle begins anew in January. It never ends for me, snow or no snow.

I planted shallots, garlic and onion bulbs last fall. shallots did well garlic and onions were small I think because I didn't know how to fertilize properly but they did great.

You're right the best time to plant woody stem plants is the late summer fall. I've lived in Phoenix 9b & N of Houston in 8b/9 I've done that for years and few failures related to failed plants. Spring Planting of woody stems has a huge uptick in mortality because the roots are not established when the Summer Heat Hits.

Spring planting is rough. It gets hot and dry before the plants establish. When I order trees online, I try to push for as early of a shipment in winter as possible. I need to get them in ASAP in February so they can establish before it gets too hot in May. The best time to plant is going to be when things are wet and cooling down, whenever that is for you. Now is actually the *best* time for me, but unfortunately, it's tough to get stock this time of year.

I love fall crops! Just a caveat that late summer sown crops will take longer to mature than what is on the seed pack because of the shorter days after the solstice. Not a big deal if you are in a southern location but something to consider.

I needed this motivation after experiencing a few garden fails this summer. I’ve been staring at the holes in my garden wondering what I can do with the empty space while I’m waiting to put out my fall brassicas. This is gonna be random but plant devils fig and eggplant. They should be big enough for you to use the devils fig as rootstock to put the eggplant before it gets too cold, and then you can overwinter them while uou wait for the graft to take hold. Then you basically get an eggplant tree

I did peaches and cream corn. It grew wonderfully and we just had two ears yesterday. I live in MA. It was a very “meaty” corn and stuck to our teeth. Not the best we’ve had, but not bad. I don’t think I’ll do it again though. We gave an abundance of corn around here.

Have you tried growing Cherry plums? They are a hit down here in central Florida. We aren't zoned to grow them here. We were looking for pluots, which are a cross between apricots & plums and that's when we came across the cherry plums. Hope you can grab a bag of cherry plums at WalMart & try growing them. 😊 Thank you for all of your wonderful info - it is encouraging & helpful. Our young grandson planted 3 watermelon seeds the day they moved back to PA., they sprouted & now we have 6 melons & several small ones growing. 😂. We didn't expect that!

I'm growing various varieties of tomatoes in pots. Online sources say 70 - 90 degrees for setting fruit. I'm finding that hard to believe. . They seem to be wanting to produce fruit when hi 60's and 70s. In fact I have a whole bunch of tomatoes that just came out of what looked like dead blossoms. I'm happily amazed.

Large-fruited tomatoes do not set fruit well when daytime temps eclipse 90F and nighttime temps eclipse 70F. The pollen gets sticky and the flowers become sterile. The ideal temperature for tomato fruit set is daytime temps in the 70-85F range and nighttime temps in the 55-65F range. If I were a tomato plant, every day would be a high of 80F and a low of 62F. Smaller-fruited tomatoes, like cherry tomatoes, are more resilient in the heat. But the real enemy of tomatoes is full summer sun. They like dappled light situations.

My summer squash always start strong and produce until the squash borers get them. Tried ALL the squash borer solutions but not much joy. I grew Tromboncinos this year with great success. Here is the problem. I spotted squash borers moths in the first week of May. My summer squash were done by second week of June. The tromboncinos mostly shrugged off the borers until the first week in July. The borers still attack them but only at the base of the leaves and cannot penetrate the stems. I harvested a number of greens and let 3 go to winter stage, one at 8 lbs and 44"! At one point, the 44" squash grew 4.5 inches in 24 hours. Point is, people say to replant after squash borers, but in my region they don't stop in June! Um, just realized I'm a bit off track. Tromboncino=good, squash borers=bad. I tried several several plantings of summer squash over the last 6 weeks. Zucchini, yellow, and crook neck but no joy. The pest load is too great or the temp is too high. Promising spouts die or develop 4-6 tiny stunted leaves and stall. I think the temperature is too high... 95 degree average here in July? Any suggestions? I have a 4.5' x 10' box behind my townhome. I'm getting enough okra to pickle a pint jar a week, a pint of cherry tomatoes every 2 days, 2nd year of trying peppers and eggplant with no luck. Good production with yellow beans earlier in spring. Probably more productive beans but that is what I started with and save seeds.

Turned my compost pile this morning then tipped over three of my fifty five gallon potato barrels that the vines had died of,blue Adirondack and red Pontiac. Not the best I’ve ever had but very respectable amount. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll be planting zucchini,cucumbers,leaf lettuce and broccoli. Want to do a little more prep work on a couple raised beds.

@@TheMillennialGardener All I can say is do it, I really like food grade fifty five gallon barrels.drilling a bunch of holes in the bottom cut the top off or out whatever you like.soil or compost some fertilizer and sulfur potatoes then about eight inches of whatever you like leafs,mulch,bag of pine shavings work extremely well then a little more fertilizer from time to time.When the vines die of tip over on tarp pick out potatoes and put what’s Left on tarp back in barrel for next time. I

We have about 5-6 weeks left in the rainy season before it stops. You just have to push through it and do it anyway. It always dries out her in late September. The next 3-4 days should be fairly dry.

Here in Zone 8, I've never found a limit for kale. If you plant your kale now and allow it to get mature, it can take single digits, especially if you cover it.

I'm in zone 7 and started my main fall garden on June 21st and 5 weeks in things have taken off! Two weeks later I broke ground on a new garden area(60x30) and I have snow peas 5" tall along with beets, bulb onions, garlic, potatoes, butternut squash, and tomato's! Everything is sprouting and looks promising for a new patch of fresh tilled soil alone! Def need to get fruit trees established however so way behind on that one. I have nectarine, cherry, and apple seeds saved and plan to have a small orchard! Thanks so much for the update and inspiration to get things into the dirt!

Excellent! Now is actually a really good time to start ordering fruit trees. Planting them in late summer is the best. Usually, they catch the tail end of thunderstorm season when it's still fairly humid and wet, which is highly beneficial. Then, they can slowly establish during the cool weather. Unless you're on the west coast where it's bone dry, August is a pretty good planting month if you have rain and humidity, but the heat is dissipating.

Succession planting is a game changer for production, even in zone 5 where I am. I started bush green beans, corn, and cucumbers after I removed my carrots, turnips, and beets. In the fall I'm going to start more carrots, onions, and transplant my cabbage when I remove my early corn.

Middle TN - we have tried bush beans 4 times now. They just aren't growing the way you'd expect beans to grow here. No clue what's going on. We have different beds. Different areas to the sun. They just aren't working this year, and I wish they were.

I'm in NC also, but the far end of it from you. Being able to see the highest peak east of the Missippi, Mt Mitchell, from my back porch. I'm in a lot colder climate than you. I plant some summer squash in July and some beans. Stripe beans are a favorite of mine. Deer here really love them too, though. When we left on a vacation for 4 days, the deer almost destroyed my garden. I have learned over the past 2 years that basil is a goodsend for a gardener to keep pest like tomato worms and now deer out of it. They did not touch my tomatoe bed. Basil is the only difference in the beds I have planted.

@TheMillennialGardener I have a 6' fence around most of my plots. I have to use a raised bed style on the land that I have. It is either thick woods with laurel and mtn ivy or red clay. Across the front side I run a string and hang pie tins to keep deer out. I just didn't get it done before we left for a few days. Without the dogs being out as much as usual, the deer took advantage. The pie tins and basil planted through the rest of my plots. I've had no more problems. I still have to believe that the smell of regular and spicy basil saved my tomatoes this year. They have been stripped before, but not since last year when I tried planting the basil in it. I will let you know how it works next year. Deer destroyed my patatoes this year. I will try the basil in them next year.

I just grew the P&C you have now and Burpee Triple Crown Bi-color hybrid, 75 days to maturity. It did finish a solid 8-9 days behind the Triple Crown. The Triple Crown beat it soundly.. fuller ears, more complete rows, and more consistent from stalk to stalk, all while being a solid week faster.. everyone was out of stock for Fall planting.. boo. I’m using Serendipity Triple Sweet Hybrid instead.. 82 days but it’s also magnificent! (My expected finish date is Oct 4th) zone 8A..Keep in mind… With the Super sweet varieties, the sweetness starts fading as soon as you pick it! I left mine on for an extra 4-5 days while we were gorging on 6-8 ears ever night at supper.. fresh. The rest I pulled down and immediately vacuum sealed in the husk and straight to freezer..

I big mistake gardeners make is trying to keep their initial plants alive all summer. It's pointless. In NC, we can easily grow 4 waves of cucumbers and squash. Even northern tiered states can grow 2-3 crops.

Not necessarily. Many of these things will not grow well in a grow bag. For large individual plants like squash and cucumbers, grow bags are great. I use them every year for those plants. But string beans and corn, on the other hand, would not do well. String beans need long rows, and corn need incredible amounts of nutrients, so neither will be very productive in containers. Same thing with leeks and onions. You'd get poor yields compared to a raised bed. Fruit trees should never be grown in grow bags, only in-ground or in hard plastic nursery containers.

I've learned so much from your videos. Thank you for educating us. I have a cucumber question. As you suggested I got Beit Alpha cuce seeds this year. Although the seed packet says all female flowers, after I planted them in May all I got was male flowers. After two and a half months I am just now getting a few cuces. Still mostly male flowers. What do you think happened? My crop will be severely reduced because of all the time that has passed. Also the plants are starting to look a little tired. I have used your fertilizer suggestions too. Too late this year for a good crop??

You should be able to grow pretty much everything I grow fairly easily. Don't be afraid to give a citrus tree a try. A Browns Select satsuma tree will grow well in your area with a little winter protection.

Merlin is fantastic. The fruit set is near 100%, no pollination required. I am testing the Sure Thing for parthenocarpy. All my plants are under insect netting, so we'll see if it's true.

It's monsoon season here in Arizona. What nutrient(s) does the rain wash away in the soil (if any) and what should I be feeding my plants following a heavy rain?

That question isn't possible to answer, because it will be different in every location and in every soil type. You should be fertilizing them every 7-14 days with an all purpose organic granular fertilizer and supplementing with water soluble fertilizers to help them push through stress.

Surprised you planted an Avocado tree in your zone. What variety is it? I live in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (NE FL) zone 9B and would love to have an Avocado tree. I looked at the Mexicolas. Our temps and dip into the 20s in December and January but not always. In 2022 we had a several niights of hard frost in the low 20s in December. In 2023/24 we have had no frosts. Great videos. I didn't have land when I lived in NJ and PA. I lived in apartments and jumped around from place to place. I grew everything in 5 gallon buckets and in planters. Mostly peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers. I had *extremely* limited room, because I lived in Philly and the surrounding areas.

You must harvest a ton of produce during your growing season. How do you harvest and use/preserve it all? Would really appreciate a video on that. My garden did great last year but I was overwhelmed with what to do with it all!

I harvest year-round. It's really not hard to eat almost all of it. You just have to change your eating habits. Force yourself to eat exclusively out of your garden. We really only buy meat, dairy and eggs. Everything else, we eat what's in season. If you do that, you can go through an insane amount of food. The mistake people make is they don't change their shopping habits, so their home grown produce goes to waste.

Do not bother with organic modern sweet corn. It won’t go well. Use something like Jack’s 20-20-20 or MG AP 24-8-16 weekly alongside some organic food.

I may have made a mistake, but Most of the trees I have were here or grown from seed. I will be finding their ground soon, but, when you have a wonderful fruit, why not keep it going? Lemon, Peach, Plumb... I did have a few others pop up, oak & liquid ember, maybe maple too. still not sure about that leaf... now, I may work 12 or 13 hours a day, but I will water before & after work if needed. Often, watering by flashlight, & even now, I worry about some plants, they are light & we have wind. Had to upright 6 today... PPL have asked me about dogs v.s. Cats... & I answer, on those cold, rainy days, would you rather take you Dog for a walk, or clean the cat box inside your home? I am more of a cat person :-) But, I still like dogs. . .

We live in SE Texas. Both of my great grandmothers always said to plant trees in months that end in “er”

It depends on the tree. If I planted, say, citrus, figs or avocados that late here, they may not survive the winter. They have to establish first. For dormant/deciduous trees, that timeframe can be ideal in most of the US. But, in states that have a winter dry season, like Florida, again, that's tricky. It's really location-dependent and will vary based on what you're planting.

Butternut may be a challenge. It usually is longer to maturity, unless it's a small bush variety. You may need some frost cloth on hand to protect them to finish their maturity.

Love your videos! I have carbon and cherokee purple tomatos. The top 1/3 of the tomatoes stay green and some stay green plus spiral split around the top. Do you have any advice on what may be causing this? I live in southern Va, about an hour from NC. Thanks!

Yes, I stopped growing those varieties years ago. They don't ripen well, and they struggle badly here due to the heat, humidity and rainfall. I have much better luck growing a variety called Rosella Purple early in the season, which is better than both Cherokee Purple *and* Carbon, and it doesn't have the green shoulders issue. It is a Dwarf Tomato Project tomato, so it quits very early in the year, but the flavor is out of this world. You may also want to look into Chef's Choice purple if you're looking for a more reliable indeterminate. It's an F1 version of Cherokee Purple and is a little better with yields.

It depends on your 7b. Annuals are grown based on frost dates. Hardiness zones are for perennials. You'll probably need a solid 100 days of growing season remaining to get a ripe cantaloupe, unless it's a very small variety, because day length will drop and they will struggle to reach maturity come October. I'm guessing it's probably too late, unless you try an extremely small variety like Honey Rock.

Hardiness zones only describe your annual minimum temperature, nothing more. It's actually a really poor indicator of climate. It's only applicable for determining if certain perennials can survive. Thanks for watching!

Do you recommend using seeds from the cucumbers that I grew this year for next year because they are acclimated or try half my crop with them and still buy from a dealer like fedco which I purchased them from originally

It depends if you don't care if they grow true to type. If you're growing F1's, or if you're growing numerous varieties nearby that cross-pollinate, they won't grow true and you'll get random cucumber plants. I do not save seed. I buy fresh seed when I run out of seed.

No. Avocado trees should never be container grown. They need full access to the soil. Even “dwarfing” varieties. It is in that raised bed due to drainage in my rear property.
