Thank you so much for your clear and coherent explanation of how to use the slow release and the water soluble fertilizers. I’ve never had anyone break it down so well and make it entirely comprehensible. I’m sure my plants thank you as well.

I love hearing reports like this. Knowing these videos are making a difference is just awesome. Glad to hear you're seeing results. Keep in mind you can extrapolate this to other fruiting trees and vegetables that are "heavy feeders": tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, etc. Fertilizers that promote blooming can really make a big difference.

Can hardly contain my excitement. And look forward to later buying named varieties. CHEERS to you Squire.

Beautiful information. I have my 10 year old fig tree every year during the month of May and June it is full of very sweet and delicious fruits, every morning I have to pluck out the big ripe fruits. I take these without any spray or fertiliser, I only provide watering during the summer. That's all. Thanks for sharing this beautiful vlog.

Best breakdown and explanation of fertilizers - EVER. Thank you. This was so helpful. Fertlilizing has been the most confusing part of my gardening. There are literally thousands of figs. Green figs with red, yellow and purple interiors, purple skinned figs with yellow, red and purple interiors, black figs with...well, you get the point. I’m sure there are plenty of red, black and purple skinned varieties you’d love as well. Nurseries sell the same 10-20 common varieties. I suggest looking at FigBid for unique varieties, and going to figaholics.com and reading Harvey’s descriptions for fig varieties that sound interesting. He has hundreds listed. There are so many amazing types.

I’ve always used 5-10-15 like many use for vegetables and have had pretty good results. I live in South Georgia. I usually use in March, July and a little less around the middle of August before they go dormant so it gets dissolved during the winter months and helps boost in the spring.

They really do have remarkably different effects. If you want to be simple about it, just get a balanced fertilizer, like an organic 5-5-5 and a soluble 20-20-20. However, if you want to optimize, understanding the numbers really helps. It can make a difference.

@@TheMillennialGardener Can't be any simpler than 1st number is for upper growth and such....the second number is for the down growth,roots and such and the 3rd number is for all around health. They can decide what they may have a deficiency in and how to correct it. Not perfect,but it helps.

I bought 3 news trees from a nursery in Georgia. Supposed to be 2-3 foot trees. They arrived as sticks with roots. I planted them immediately. Two now have a tiny bit of green popping out, but the third has nothing. I looked on their site and they say not to fertilize for a year. I just don't understand why they recommend that. Any ideas? I did fertilize them according to your regime. I didn't realize they said not to fertilize until I went searching their site for their guarantee. It was really hidden. My other two trees I already had are doing amazing! Lots of figlets! I've been fertilizing based on your schedule since I took them out of the garage and repotted them into bigger pots. @TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm glad to hear that. Fig trees, especially in containers, benefit from both soluble fertilizers and granulated organic fertilizers. Soluble fertilizer is mandatory when growing fig trees in containers, but not necessarily required for fig trees planted in ground. Both should be supplemented with organic fertilizers. If you want to be lazy, you can just fertilize them with a 20-20-20 soluble and a 5-5-5 organic (or numbers that are very similar). I prefer changing the regimen per season, but that will be more complicated and require an understanding of the NPK ratios. If you want to fertilize based on the season, I have instructions in this playlist based on the time of year: kzbin.info/aero/PL1gY7BoYBGIFNbJEUdApbh_E57uNBLG2j

@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 4 жыл бұрын
That's tough. You may want to consider placing 4 stakes around the tree, putting a piece of chicken wire around the tree and stuffing it with a bale of straw. It can insulate and prevent dieback. I did this to my bananas last winter because they die back here. Well, this year, no dieback! And I have a nice bunch of fruit forming.

So - I live in Scandinavia and can only grow for spring crops, but I want as many figs as possible nonetheless. Can I fertilize with high Phosphorus now then…? My figs are still leafless but with closed buds of leaves and tiny figs forming. I miss guidance on how to grow figs in our zone. (Coastal zone 7) I love your videos but I can only apply some of your great advice here… I would love a video with your take on how to get the most out of spring figs. And I would share it in all of my Scandinavian gardening groups. 😂

awesome info. Got my calendar filled out. Question about the epsom salts .You only use Epsom salts in the 2-3 early season feedings , none in mid season, and then again in every 2-3 fruiting cycle feedings and thats it? Also, you use 1 Tbsp of bone meal in every single feeding till the very end of the growing season? Important to know. Thankyou

Very clear explanation thank you. Here's my fig problem... moved into an established house 4 years ago (South West area of Australia) with a big old fig tree with fruit forming every season...2 crops actually, BUT the fruit never ripens and fall off still hard. I have pruned it down by removing very tall & crossing branches. Laid down Lucerne hay topped with aged sheep & chicken poo, then wood shavings mulch. Winter here is our wet season so all this has been well watered in, ready for spring growth. Should I add more fertilizer with 'P' when the new leaves start forming... and any other tips to get this old tree to give us some edible fruit? Many thanks

Engineer Here, Huge Fan. I have noticed that Miracle Gro "Bloom Booster Flower Food" has 2 different formulations depending on where it's purchased. It seems the 1.5lb and 5.5lb packages available at big box hardware stores have an NPK of 15-30-15 while the 1lb and 4lb packages sold in smaller retailers and garden stores have an NPK of 10-52-10. Pretty Different! Any experience or recommendations regarding which to use? Could I use one or the other once my figs start budding/fruiting? Keep up the great work! Enjoying following along and putting it all into practice.

U can grow healthy figs with a lot of fruits in a container without any mineral based fertilizers.. The container just has to be big enough to support a healthy micro biom...(I tend to stay away from miracle grow , because using pure mineral salts kills off some of the beneficial bacteria/fungi.) So u should up the liters of soil when u want to stay organic. Problem with container Figs is , that the containers get so big and heavy that it is getting hard to move them around, for example in winter. So using mineral based fertilizers makes it possible to use smaller containers. There is no right or wrong.. I personally like to keep it organic, but it's not a must and there is a place for every way a gardener can take. Just wanted to point that out. I think on the bottom line, the mineral based fed plants will do a bit better, and will give a bit more figs... but the organic fed fig, will stay healthy with a more balanced soil ph for a longer time and will lead to less headaches ... that's at least my turn on it.

Just found your great video! I was asking myself how we would iterate this schedule for cultivars that we expect especially or only Brebas from? Like Desert King and others? Would you fertilize differently? Cheers, Alex

I have a fig bush that came from my moms and hers from her moms . The problem I have when my figs start to ripen I have these big Japanese beetles I mean the real big ones not like the little guys that eat your roses . A few years back they where so many I spread Liquid 7 dust on the hole tree to kill them , you should have seen the ground it was covered. Every winter here in NC I trim it back . But the branches grow so fast a long I have to use a ladder to pick . So this past winter I murdered it . If it don’t grow crazy and the beetle don’t show up I should be good .

I'm skeptical of bloom boosting type fertilizers. I personally haven't noticed a difference when using them. I would be curious to know if you have evidence aside from anecdotal to justify spending the extra money on such products? My figs seem to grow just fine without the phosphorus boost. Not trying to attack your method either, looking to learn!

Some time back I was looking for a 10-60-10 or the like powder for occasional rare judicious use on native plants as my native dirt has like zero P. I could not find any like in the old days! But I did find articles saying that the value of high-P for more fruiting had been debunked.

Thank you for this video. You seem to know about fig trees and my wife, who is a keen gardener has taken on board your suggested fertiliser plan. She has a question that you may know the answer too..... When her figs begin to ripen and go black they all fall off the tree, would you know why? Appreciate your help. Thank you. John from Australia
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 11 ай бұрын
That could be for a few reasons: 1. Your tree is too young. This may happen in its first 1-2 years. 2. Your climate is too dry, and it's dropping its fruit because it doesn't have enough water. 3. You're over-fertilizing. 4. You're growing a Smyrna variety, which requires pollination to hold fruit. If ALL fruits are dropping, this is the most likely situation. Most varieties of figs are caducous, which need pollination from a tiny wasp endemic to the Mediterranean. Australia does not have the wasp in significance, so you can only grow "common figs" that hold their fruit without pollination. Make sure you're growing figs from cuttings from people that are known to hold their fruit. This will teach you about the fig wasp: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5iQXnWIlKarfZIsi=xsxEc5ZmCwDrzme-

Thank you. Greatly appreciate your response. We live at 840 metres above sea level in a wettish climate. Her fig tree is in a large half wooden 'wine' barrel and netted (with 1/2 inch holes) to protect from the birds. The tree has been in the barrel for at least 2 years and is about 2.5 metres high. My wife will appreciate your comments and as a keen gardener she will study and absorb what you have said. We will watch your link on the fig wasp. And will check out other videos you may have. Thank you very much. John & Michal

I have learned so much thank you. Your fertilizing videos make alot of sense. How do earthworms fit into the picture ad I'm worried about using fertilizer with them.
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The organic, granulated fertilizers are precursors to compost, so the granulated organic 5-5-5 type fertilizers and bone meal actually feed your soil. They are inert in their form that you place down. What happens is the worms, soil bacteria and soil fungi actually consume those fertilizers and what they excrete is what the plants actually use, so when you use those fertilizers, you encourage soil life to come in. As for the soluble-type fertilizers like MiracleGro, they feed the plant directly and don't require processing by the soil life. They won't feed the worms, bacteria and fungi, but they won't harm it, either. They're like giving your plant a concentrated vitamin. I suggest using them both in tandem.
