I’m sure there are plenty of red, black and purple skinned varieties you’d love as well. Nurseries sell the same 10-20 common varieties. I suggest looking at FigBid for unique varieties, and going to figaholics.com and reading Harvey’s descriptions for fig varieties that sound interesting. He has hundreds listed. They really do have remarkably different effects. If you want to be simple about it, just get a balanced fertilizer, like an organic 5-5-5 and a soluble 20-20-20. However, if you want to optimize, understanding the numbers really helps. It can make a difference.

Two now have a tiny bit of green popping out, but the third has nothing. I looked on their site and they say not to fertilize for a year. I just don't understand why they recommend that. Any ideas? I did fertilize them according to your regime. I didn't realize they said not to fertilize until I went searching their site for their guarantee. It was really hidden. Best gardening channel by Miles,as a newbie i often struugle keeping up but the way you explain makes it so so easy. Can both fertiliser be applied on the same tree?
@TheMillennialGardener2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm glad to hear that. Fig trees, especially in containers, benefit from both soluble fertilizers and granulated organic fertilizers. Soluble fertilizer is mandatory when growing fig trees in containers, but not necessarily required for fig trees planted in ground. Both should be supplemented with organic fertilizers. If you want to be lazy, you can just fertilize them with a 20-20-20 soluble and a 5-5-5 organic (or numbers that are very similar). I prefer changing the regimen per season, but that will be more complicated and require an understanding of the NPK ratios. If you want to fertilize based on the season, I have instructions in this playlist based on the time of year: kzbin.info/aero/PL1gY7BoYBGIFNbJEUdApbh_E57uNBLG2j

My fig tree dies back to the root or ground and starts coming out in late May. This makes it hard to get much fruit before winter. Although last year I pinched them and got more fruit.
@TheMillennialGardener4 жыл бұрын
That's tough. You may want to consider placing 4 stakes around the tree, putting a piece of chicken wire around the tree and stuffing it with a bale of straw. It can insulate and prevent dieback. I did this to my bananas last winter because they die back here. Well, this year, no dieback! And I have a nice bunch of fruit forming.

Here's my fig problem... moved into an established house 4 years ago (South West area of Australia) with a big old fig tree with fruit forming every season...2 crops actually, BUT the fruit never ripens and fall off still hard. I have pruned it down by removing very tall & crossing branches. Laid down Lucerne hay topped with aged sheep & chicken poo, then wood shavings mulch. Winter here is our wet season so all this has been well watered in, ready for spring growth. Should I add more fertilizer with 'P' when the new leaves start forming... and any other tips to get this old tree to give us some edible fruit? Many thanks

U can grow healthy figs with a lot of fruits in a container without any mineral based fertilizers.. The container just has to be big enough to support a healthy micro biom...(I tend to stay away from miracle grow , because using pure mineral salts kills off some of the beneficial bacteria/fungi.) So u should up the liters of soil when u want to stay organic. Problem with container Figs is , that the containers get so big and heavy that it is getting hard to move them around, for example in winter. So using mineral based fertilizers makes it possible to use smaller containers. There is no right or wrong.. I personally like to keep it organic, but it's not a must and there is a place for every way a gardener can take. Just wanted to point that out. I think on the bottom line, the mineral based fed plants will do a bit better, and will give a bit more figs... but the organic fed fig, will stay healthy with a more balanced soil ph for a longer time and will lead to less headaches ... that's at least my turn on it.

Found a tiny fig plant growing in the pool equipment area; moved it into a pot and eventually into the soil. Still alive and healthy although just about a foot and a half tall. It’s been almost 2 years. Any advice how to get it to get taller? Neighbors fig trees are big. Zone 9b here. Thanks

I had a fig tree that just stayed that size for over 5 years. It took a bag of garden lime to start it growing. Today it is over head high.

Nice video❤. But how many times should I apply those fertilizers for my months old fig plants in pots? I hope to get a reply, thanks so much.

You are my go to for growing figs and veggies. Question - Should bloom booster be added to established fig trees when they start to form figlets??

I'm skeptical of bloom boosting type fertilizers. I personally haven't noticed a difference when using them. I would be curious to know if you have evidence aside from anecdotal to justify spending the extra money on such products? My figs seem to grow just fine without the phosphorus boost. Not trying to attack your method either, looking to learn!

Some time back I was looking for a 10-60-10 or the like powder for occasional rare judicious use on native plants as my native dirt has like zero P. I could not find any like in the old days! But I did find articles saying that the value of high-P for more fruiting had been debunked.

Great video! I am going to use gloves when dealing with fertilizers. I can’t pronounce some words in the ingredients and no idea if it’s natural or not so I play it safe with chemical resistant gloves.

You ever tried to put in charged Biochar in the containers? Could possibly save you a lot of fertilizer.

Are you still using the same fertilization routine? What do you think about just using osmocote for the season as opposed to biweekly feedings with jacks 20-20-20?

Figs need a lot of fertilizer in containers and prefer heavy compost and mulch when planted in ground. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for this video. You seem to know about fig trees and my wife, who is a keen gardener has taken on board your suggested fertiliser plan. She has a question that you may know the answer too..... When her figs begin to ripen and go black they all fall off the tree, would you know why? Appreciate your help. Thank you. John from Australia

That could be for a few reasons: 1. Your tree is too young. This may happen in its first 1-2 years. 2. Your climate is too dry, and it's dropping its fruit because it doesn't have enough water. 3. You're over-fertilizing. 4. You're growing a Smyrna variety, which requires pollination to hold fruit. If ALL fruits are dropping, this is the most likely situation. Most varieties of figs are caducous, which need pollination from a tiny wasp endemic to the Mediterranean. Australia does not have the wasp in significance, so you can only grow "common figs" that hold their fruit without pollination. Make sure you're growing figs from cuttings from people that are known to hold their fruit. This will teach you about the fig wasp: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5iQXnWIlKarfZIsi=xsxEc5ZmCwDrzme-

Thank you. Greatly appreciate your response. We live at 840 metres above sea level in a wettish climate. Her fig tree is in a large half wooden 'wine' barrel and netted (with 1/2 inch holes) to protect from the birds. The tree has been in the barrel for at least 2 years and is about 2.5 metres high. My wife will appreciate your comments and as a keen gardener she will study and absorb what you have said. We will watch your link on the fig wasp. And will check out other videos you may have. Thank you very much. John & Michal

I have learned so much thank you. Your fertilizing videos make alot of sense. How do earthworms fit into the picture ad I'm worried about using fertilizer with them.
@TheMillennialGardener3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The organic, granulated fertilizers are precursors to compost, so the granulated organic 5-5-5 type fertilizers and bone meal actually feed your soil. They are inert in their form that you place down. What happens is the worms, soil bacteria and soil fungi actually consume those fertilizers and what they excrete is what the plants actually use, so when you use those fertilizers, you encourage soil life to come in. As for the soluble-type fertilizers like MiracleGro, they feed the plant directly and don't require processing by the soil life. They won't feed the worms, bacteria and fungi, but they won't harm it, either. They're like giving your plant a concentrated vitamin. I suggest using them both in tandem.
