What’s your best decluttering tip for someone who wants to get started today?

First step is ask the goal or mission you have...the why? And when come to the hard stuff ( like sentimental, etc) look for the true treasures. I heard someone say...can you name 10-15 things in your home right now that are treasures...made me realize what😮 were some of my real treasures. Luv the insight yall provide!

Hi The Minimalists, When i watched the documentary in Netflix and after put together all the ideas, we decided (my mom and I), to start day by day and room by room, so the first day we started from the 1st bedroom, next day, 2nd room, 3rd room, bathroom, kitchen, living room and we continue like that, In one week we letting go a lot of things, it was amazing expirience and we continue with the purpose of living a simpler life. It is important to say that through the whole documentary we awaked our conscience of how want to live our life with purpose, I can say that it wasn´t an easy way but the result is amazing, Thank you The minimalists team.

I run a property maintenance business and my biggest clients are two retirement homes, so I regularly see what happens to peoples stuff when they pass away. 99% goes in land fill. The only things of value are financial assets (property and money) and a VERY small number of possessions relatives might want as a memory, or they might need one to use. Everything else is rubbish. Consequently most of your stuff is basically rubbish, so don't stress about getting rid of it to improve your life, as that's where its heading.

I know someone that actually cleans those homes and you’re right! money and property and jewelry are saved, some other items are saved for family to go through but many of them don’t look through them so those items end up being thrown too. But yes 99% are pretty much thrown out.

Since I have retired from teaching I am volunteering at the local animal shelter and I am a mentor to an elementary school student. I get down about the current state of our world but I am trying to expand happiness where I can.

At least twice in a year i pick a day from my day off from work and I only use it to declutter my room and clean more that usual. I did one last in the beginning of december. After having two profoundly disabled children who needed lots of medical equipment, etc. , I had to do just that. WHO I needed to be and what I needed to have and what my house looked like had to completely change. I had to give myself grace or I would literally shrivel into incompetence. Life hit us all, and we are not who we were and our standards for our life are not the same.

For the people who can’t or won’t get rid of possessions because they “paid good money for it”……that money is gone, you’ll never recoup it. You have basically turned parts of your home into a storage area. Now think about how much you pay on a mortgage or rent. I don’t do math, but I do know that paying for physical space in your home that you can’t even use isn’t cost effective.

I started doing a digital version of the get rid of one thing one day and two the next and so on. I started going through my phone apps and started really looking at what I don't use and deleting them off my phone. It really helps to mentally relieve me when I have fewer apps on my phone instead of having a wall of things I never use and have to try to find the apps I do need.

Thank you for using the word grace in the responses to Amber’s question. For people that have experienced a concussion, the injury can affect how they manage the items in their home. It takes time for the head injury to heal. I would encourage Amber to share her concern with her doctor and/or physical therapist and ask if they can recommend resources for people that have sustained a head injury to help them with organizational tasks. Organization may need to take priority over minimalism until she is feeling better.

Great episode and tips! The packing party worked amazing for me almost accidentally when we renovated our bathroom. Everything was packed up during the renovation, and when I started putting things back into the room, I realized more than half of the items I had packed away were either expired, no longer useful to me, or no longer something I wanted to add back into the space in its new form. I think minimalism itself is almost like renovating your house, because when you take things away and pick only what you really need or want in the process of adding back, you refresh the space and it appears new to you - it gives you that feeling of having a new/refreshed home.

You are so right about what you steep yourself into, you become more like. If I watch fashion videos, it causes me to want to purchase what they promote. That’s why I’m steering away from them and drowning myself with you guys to encourage focused attention on having less and being more content. I think the first question that needs to be answered is why do they want to minimize, not what to minimize or even how. What is the purpose of getting rid of items, what is it going to provide to your life, how is it going to make it better, what is it opening you up to? That will guide you in figuring out what it is that you do not need or want in your life, your home, etc. Think of what to get rid of or how it will help you to achieve the goal that you're looking for.

As best you can, let go of your attachment to most sentimental items. I just went through nearly 50 years of my photos, cards, letters and memories. Keep the memory, free yourself of the stuff attached to those memories. I feel lighter. I’m tired of managing, cleaning and moving stuff.

My son just turned 18 a few months ago and I have one storage bin in our rafters of all his memorabilia, children’s books, books, etc. when he moves out someday, that bin will go with him.

As someone who has spent the last 22-months healing a brain injury; fatigue and some level of depression is very real. Could she be "buying more" as TK suggests? ...or, simply unable to rid what comes with the daily chores...of throwing away weekly trash; getting laundry washed, folded and put away; hanging up one's coat and putting shoes away; getting the dishes done? I had to hire some temporary help. Whether it's once a month or once a week; having someone come in and help clean---while you are trying to heal---is a game changer. It doesn't have to be forever; just for a bit. This allowed me to concentrate on physical therapy. ...and, if you can't afford to pay for help; recruit a family member, friend, church group. Ask your local health clinic, HUD housing group, doctor, vocational high schoolers for a volunteer for just a couple hours of help. Many organizations have volunteers to help for such occasions. It helps one to get back on track.

This is wonderful. I began in the kitchen. 3 drawers were cleaned. the goal was to clear off the counter's. I removed a bunch of stuff cleaned thoroughly and then decided what exactly I wanted. I wanted counter space so I can actually cut my vegetables. On the counter and not on the table. Goal was accomplished in two hours. I believe that watching the netflix show through the years and just learning about your ways has developed into a proper declatter process for me. Thank you

Great advice! We downsized many of our possessions when we moved and it felt freeing. I'm concerned after hearing that many of the items we donate to Goodwill don't actually get sold, ending up in landfills or shipped to other countries. Downsizing is important, but what about shifting the focus to understanding how to not bring unnecessary items into our house in the first place??

The most important tip is to be " COMMITED TO DECLUTTERING". That is not to organizing or cleaning. But to decluttering. This sounds simple, and like a " no brainer". But reality is that this is the hardest part. Why are you doing this?..... If you don`t know why it`s never going to happen. Your why should be about your CORE VALUES. Like " this is important for your health", or " you no longer want to be a shopping addict".

I did a packing party for my entire bathroom items - all my hair accessories, creams, hygiene stuff, make up. I had so many impulse skin care and hair care products. I only use like 10% realistically.

I love this channel. And the value you all provide! Especially to ADHD people, and most especially to those who are unmedicated- what gift! My only thing that gives me the heebie geebies is that ultra polished Alabama voice, I don’t know why but I just can’t stand super clean sounding speech like that, most likely because it reminds me of those long sales informercials.

Maybe with kids ...start with taking a few laundry baskets and put them in q closet or garage and then if they dont use or ask for them ...donate them ...linen closet . .take it all out and in two weeks what yiu haven't used. Get rid of it

I think if my home caught fire, it was a towering inferno and I lost EVERYTHING! Would I miss it? The answer is no, the thing about it is - it all can be replaced. That being said, I can loose probably 96-97 percent of my belongings, however I have a handful of items that frankly is irreplaceable if I lost it I'll never get it back, those things I would be sick if I lost them . There's also the matter of do I own my items or do they own me? Currently I love my stuff, here again if I lost it I wouldn't be heartbroken but I would miss it.

To the woman with the concussion. There is no such thing as a “non-serious” brain injury. They make light of your “Stage 2” brain injury. Thank God your injury wasn’t worse, but Stage 2 brain injury is devastating. I’ve had three concussions, one with loss of consciousness, and two without, so I know a thing or two about how they affect you. Extended depressions are a symptom of a lasting traumatic brain injury. Feeling overwhelmed about anything and everything is definitely a symptom of a brain injury. Some of the depressive symptoms I had were worse with the “less serious” brain injuries. If you’re having psychological/emotional issues you’ve never really experienced before, or if emotional stuff is worse, it’s probably due to the rattling your brain took. These symptoms can last for a long, long time. You need to discuss this with your neurologist as well as any mental health professional you may be seeing. What you are experiencing with the hoarding and the overwhelm is quite possibly the result of your brain injury. But it can be managed and, over time, with treatment, it can get better. May you continue to recover.

Only keep the books you want to re-read, keep the special editions if you have bought the pretty ones many ppl like, and keep the ones you have a relationship with: like im going to read this (put it on its own going to read place and if you still havent in a year or so you let it go then) or i love this from my childhood. (All these things are ok if the library is the one part in your life you chose to be your «thing». Others choose hobby, art, travel, baking… Those books you have read and dont want to re-read or didnt like or books you feel are just there without value and reason you can donate. Hope it helps, this is what I did.

So it hit me why I can get you guys to understand certain things hat goes all into this declutter in high end things, also not having to be able to live a life to use, cook with expensive cookware, clothes, things even though I do declutter every year few times say $300 jeans. I only own high end things and I’m older almost 60, trying to for years to get in mindset.. I know if I could get someone to sell my things for me and they get a commission then I am looking for that. Also you are men. You bring on a woman like myself that owns high end everything and have health issues, caretaker where they need someone to sell for them. Also I am later in year moving to a spooky out middle nowhere place building a house to where I know I will end up selling but will have space out of this apartment that costs more than my mtg a mth and use that house to Declutter to where , whom? I am scared moving away from here where everything is. I have backups because discontinued in many areas, inflations, I hate shopping and before was shopaholic. I did the backups cause tired discontinued, I also tried can not find replacements, and do not ven want to spend money later to buy. You need a woman on like this.

I wish premieres showed up somewhere different, and when you can actually watch a video, it shows up in the normal subscription list. thanks for the suggestion, but i dont wanna unsubscribe to them

I love the practical decluttering advice. But your advice about hopefulness is discouraging. You basically said don't expect to have hope. Yet, hope is critical to humans having meaning and purpose and looking forward to the future. Thankfully the there actually is something we can fully rest our hope on: that God loves us and Jesus said we can belong to God forever, if we choose Him. Sounds too good to be true but it's real.
