" The real privilege of friendship is that the context of our already established love makes it possible for me to challenge you and get away with that in ways other people can't - a friend is someone who can play devil's advocate because the two of you can talk things out and away without the love being questioned so support isn't always about congratulations is about challenging one another." That just changed my perception of friendship, TK - and you nailed the 60s that Josh given you, welcome to have you back again - you balance out the views of Josh and Ryan. We love you TK.

Ryan when you mentioned about the friend who tells you, you have something in your teeth. That’s a friend. Brought a memory back 10 years or so. I was at a retail store. First walked into a women’s restroom. As, I was washing my hands this lady was drying her hands and just gave me this look and said nothing. I walked out pulled a shopping cart. This lady walking in ran to me as if she knew me. And whisper in my ear. ( you have a seat cover hanging). I felt embarrassed and grateful. If only the First Lady inside the restroom would have said something.

As a person who has OCD, I am frequently "bothered" when it comes to politics, consumerism / greedy companies, and hypocritical organized religion. How can you not be in todays society. I often hear people talk about taking a break from the media and I have tried this myself but I've become so addicted to it that it's hard not to find out recent happenings to be bothered by. I wonder if this is why so many people are on drugs, prescribed or illicit. Thankfully I was able to wean myself from relying on Xanax to maintain my sanity.

T.K. at 10:50 is sooo my struggle. I help others but not for them....for my own feelings of lack. Letting others go do their journeys and own the consequences of their decisions is the highest form of "humanness" we can enact. ❤ P.S. This also totally frees up my mind for myself..and I then need to face my own demons. Freely giving to others may actually be avoidance of my own issues.

This whole episode has been truly powerful. You touched on so many things. The quotes were really profound. The bravoury of the listeners who shared today and the advice given. The last caller regarding bereavement, I too am going through my late father's stuff but hearing your words has pushed me to think differently and look at these items differently. Thank you All. ❤

I have so much respect for TK and his words to caller Christie... I also wanted to add that recovery programs like UA and DA, all free and on line as well as in person deal with money, emotions, compulsive e shopping recovery would be great support for her... those12 step programs are miraculous. Praying for Christie... she is so brave. I have had to walk away from a lot of family to heal from extreme abuse and all it brought .... it was not easy but I am grateful I am not living like that anymore. The Air B and b thing is real... unless you have had to deal with a revolving door of strangers next to your living space, it may be hard to grasp how upsetting that is... it is an actual problem. I think it's a bit self righteous to dismiss someone being upset about that.

I've had a KZbin break on and off recent weeks. I got to a point where I was like right I've listened to everything and I've learnt everything I need to know so I can move on in my life without the help from others but if something like your show is helpful why do I need to move on from it?? Funny how our minds work. I'm back and enjoying the wisdom and advice and how I can apply parts of it in to my life. Thank you all

I love how Joshua says you can find wisdom in any ancient wisdom tradition. As a Muslim, I found a ready home in minimalism because Islam has a very minimalistic faith structure. There are no props or objects required to worship, all of it is within the mind of the worshipper. Our places of prayer are mostly unadorned, and the beauty of the prayer spaces turn inward. We are not allowed to waste resources like food and water and are encouraged to live a simple life. Our burials are green burials without expensive caskets and headstones. Not every Muslim lives like that, of course, but the traditions are there.

Guilt is good when it leads us to be better. But never despair. It's a wonderful thing to see something negative about oneself and then actually work on changing those things. But also, distance yourself from family who selfishly use you. You can keep your distance while still praying for the people you love.

Recreational outrage is a great phrase and sums up a lot of posts on Twitter and Facebook. It feels like a good way of expressing how you feel but instead of using that energy to do something (and perhaps we feel we can't), our energy is used up arguing or agreeing with others. I try to direct my energy into more action that might do something more concrete.

The best way to stop feeling guilty is to stop using the word SHOULD. Remove it from your vocabulary and you won't believe the difference. Yes, sure, "I wish I had done things differently," "I don't like what I did, but I'm going to learn from it and do better next time," but get rid of SHOULD!!!

You really missed the mark with answering Laine's inquiry. You even mentioned Viktor Frankl and cognitive dissonance and yet used "gratitude" as your cognitive dissonance. Do you think the disenfranchised are content knowing those in better situations have gratitude and are not bothered? You said she was complaining, but she wasn't, she was asking you your position, which you answered by stating you worrying about these things doesn't serve you basically. You had the opportunity to answer her honestly and yet you went off on a tangent about her complaining when she was asking your position, which made it look as though you were triggered. The best we got was the one guy saying if he can help someone directly by buying them a sandwich he would and did. I've never watched this podcast before or are familiar with you guys to know if this is normal for this show. I am sure you are not bothered by my comment so no harm in leaving it, it is just here for Laine to know that this non answer was frustrating and revealing for someone who is not part of the echo chamber of comments.

I am disappointed, not bothered by your response to Elaine. How about some concrete advice like she can go to community meetings to express her concerns about the Airbnb’s in her neighborhood. She could become a community activist. You did not even answer her about how you square renting Airbnbs. I am sure you could come up with a reasonable response that would be true for yourself without worrying about how she would respond. There are so many ways to give back to vulnerable communities besides not complaining or lecturing or ranting. I thought you guys would be more thoughtful with your response. Instead, it seemed that you were being defensive. Too bad. You really missed an opportunity. I was looking forward to your response but instead I was not impressed. You completely missed the mark on Elaine’s question.
@sohosystem
@sohosystem 8 күн бұрын
they did answer her question, you just didn't listen properly. I'll simply it for you: they said there are tradeoffs and you can't operate perfectly in a world, which means you have to accept that some (or even most) of our actions don't have perfectly positive impact because of the systems we operate in. therefore, because e.g., the sharing economy isn't also perfectly bad, they have accepted this trade-off, as we all have to in all aspects of our choices.
