Oooo I love your sofa pillows❤ Go with the new place for coffee maker. I think you can lose the 2 decorative napkins on the shelf, they have no function. I like the pitcher with flowers ..however, (Im gonna put my keys on the kitchen table, think I will toss them on the matt, less obvious") you dont need the white doily under it, more to clean under. Do you need 2 cake plates out? Pack another one away, let your shelves breathe, too much crammed in that corner, open space is good space.❤ just a suggestion. OH! here is an idea, use one of your cake plates to put under the pitcher of flowers if you like it out, just pack the dome away.😉

It is 100% okay to get new stuff to freshen up your space and then put away and eventually get rid of the old stuff! I get my stuff at the Goodwill and I take it to the Goodwill too! I would argue that this is actually a fantastic thing to do and is the ultimate way to recycle. My decide once rule on this is that I don't buy new stuff. I buy stuff from the thrift store or vintage or whatever. The old stuff is often of much higher quality.

When my older children were younger, we used to do this thing that we called yard sale. I would go in the room and drag everything but the big furniture out throw all the laundry on the couch, and put the toys in a long line through the house. Then, after vacuuming, we would start putting things back, but the boys had to go to the “yard sale” and select the most important things to put back in the room. Once the room was where we wanted it, everything else would be boxed up and put in the storage shed, or set aside for a real yard sale/donation/give away. It was the best way I have ever found to get young children excited about cleaning their room and decluttering toys. Haha, I guess desperation led me to a hybrid of Marie Kondo and this fabulous new approach!

I tried it this evening. The reactions have been so funny. My husband and boys were gone, and the girls in their room and I quickly emptied the living room of all decor and pillows and blankets (and stray items) My girl came out to say good night and looked at it and said, Mama, you cleaned the living room : ) I told her what I did and she said she loved it!! All clean and empty. When my husband and boys got home, my husband said, what happened? It looks like we just moved in, the homey touch is missing, but my sons felt just like my daughter - it feels so good everything clean. Please, Mama , when you put some stuff back, only a few things, not much! It was really eye opening and hilarious. : ) By the way, I do love that clean empty feeling too. Thank you, Dawn, for this evening inspiration. : )

My analysis without trying this: 1. Empty an entire room/space. 2. Box everything up using Amazon Boxes 3. Hide everything. 4. Wait 24 hours. 5. Spaz out since I still need to use the space but don't have the necessary tools to do what I need to do. Post 24 hrs: 1. Put everything away that I know I'll actually use AND has a space. 2. Find cool items and tools to fill now empty space. 3. Return back to where I started.

I’ve seen steel (not aluminum because it isn’t magnetic) cookie sheets used to corral magnets, notes, etc. on the side of a refrigerator. It makes the assortment of small items “read” as one item. It’s the same concept as gathering small items on a tray to make a grouping, which looks less cluttered than a lot of individual items.

I watched this video a few days ago and couldn't get it out of my head. I even showed it to my mom, age 82, who lives with me and my husband and daughter. My mom has been doing Swedish Death cleaning in her own room. She loved your video as well. Yesterday we took everything out of every cabinet and drawer in the kitchen. Scrubbed it all down and made some hard decisions. There were some things that were lovely but that we just don't use. I came up with a new line. "If this had never come into my house would I miss it? If the answer is no, I got rid of it. Thank you for this video. I feel so motivated to continue.

My youngest son, 21, moved back home after two years of college - Culinary Arts - and working. He is revamping the kitchen w/me. We need more counter space to work. We can’t expand, so we have to detract. I wanted everything in the drawers so we had to declutter a lot. I was debating an egg slicer… I don’t like or eat boiled eggs. I don’t use them in Chicken salad or anything😝. We only make them to decorate for Easter. I couldn’t let it go because “everybody has one” (my mom/mother-in-law/sister). I can use it for slicing strawberries and other soft fruit (knowing I will NEVER remember to use it for that😒). I put it in the garage yard sale bin but it was still talking to me. Your question of “If this had never come into my house, would I miss it? If “No” let it go!” led me to ask “What would I use instead??” A knife. Like I have for 40+ years. Except now I have my son’s professional knives which make everything so much faster!! Thanks for your idea!! Using that with Dawn’s ideas here will make letting go so much easier! 🙂💐 **Update - I offered that egg slicer in a FB Gifting group. Someone snatched it right up! It’s gone and not missed!!**

I accidentally hushed my house last week when I got new flooring. I paid extra to have the installers move the furniture, but I cleared all surfaces and emptied closets and stacked everything in the laundry room. It was so much easier to get rid of stuff afterward (but not easy to do laundry) and I realized how much extra we had when I was slowing reincorporating our belongings. I’ve been so much happier in the space. Now I need to hush the garage by taking care of all these donations! Maybe my garage will be quiet enough to fit my car!!

I think the biggest "transition" in a persons stage of life, are the senior years. So much change to adjust too, and a lot of epiphanies you now have time to realize. "Mom's" don't get to be themselves until later in life......things I thought where circumstances or learned, are really me. I really can't find my way out of a paper bag, I'll get lost going around the block......and if I don't see it, or go looking for it, I don't remember I have it:( Welcome to my world....These videos are a great guide in how to get from a to z and learn a little something about yourself. Instead of open shelves for my art supplies.......cabinets with doors and displays where I can "see" everything when I open them. A win win.......Thank you:)

About once every other year, I clear out one room completely to wash walls and repaint, then I put things back in and inevitably, about 2/3’s of the items get put back in the room- bedrooms, living room, kitchen, baths, laundry- each room gets emptied, one room at a time- either the dump or our favorite thrift store gets the items I no longer use or desire. The house always look like a new remodel and fresh!

(With the napkin just like it is.) Then on the second shelf, keep the plant and scoot it towards the center just a bit. Also put the rose glasses to the right of the plant. Leave a little space between them. Remove the wooden cake plate and put the rose plate and white mixing bowl, just one shelf down. Keep the clear one on the bottom where it is. Maybe use the peach Pyrex bowl and put it on the counter with fruit in it. It all looks very pretty so don't think you have to use these ideas. LOVE this video and the resting concept! ❤❤❤

The concept is good, good experiment. The coffee maker - I think it works better where it was . Personally, I gave up the coffee maker and switched to the pour over method. Smaller vessels, less to store and they start out clean every day. The coffee tastes better with pour over and recommended by all coffee roasters

Hi Dawn. Thanks for this video and decluttering ideas. One tip I wanted to share that I learned from an organization conference (I can't remember who did the kitchen organization tips), is that your avocadoes will keep longer if you store them in the fridge drawer with lemons (or other citrus). I've found this helpful as avocadoes in particular seem to have such a short window where they're really good and they're too good (and expensive) to waste ;) We're always going in the fridge for something daily, so they're easy to spot and check when they're ripe.
@lyndi908210 ай бұрын
Yes! Keep avos at room temp til not hard, then move to the fridge to slow ripening. Bananas and tomatoes will ripen avos FAST, so be careful sitting these fruits together. A hard avo will ripen in less than an hour in a paper bag with a tomato or banana.
@MyFocusVaries10 ай бұрын
We have found that they will ripen slowly in the fridge even if you put them in while they're still hard. And we don't find it necessary to store them with citrus. Ours are in a mini bin at eye level so we remember them.

Omg! I’ve moved out all my chachkas & decor from my living room & bathroom. Loving the clean slate ❤ Excited to redo & shop my house to re-design in few days :) Love this decluttering/redesign concept!

While I do appreciate the Decluttering Inspiration, and I do understand all you are doing in your home and the reasons for it, I just am not a Minimalist! I do declutter weekly...and bring a box to the donation center every month...but I do like a decorated home; it makes my heart glad...and I guess that is what is comes down to! Your heart is glad... my heart is glad... win win for all! I still like to watch your channel, as it makes me go through drawers and boxes, and declutter, organize.... Your pink Fiestaware is so pretty! Love it!

I have an armoire in my dining room and I turned it into a coffee /tea bar and extra storage for pretty glass serving pieces. When I close the doors, it’s just gone, but when it’s open it’s pretty. :)

I was thinking that too plus mugs... maybe cover the coffee maker with one of the cute pinky towels so it doesn't stick out and matches the open shelves.

I am definitely ready to do this. Also its a shame there are several hateful mean comments on here. Im sure their homes are not perfect. I love almost every video and idea Dawn shares. Even if it might not work for you or be your style, you dont need to share your negative thoughts. Be kind.

I really enjoyed this video. Your kitchen always looks neat and tidy but removing and redecorating as you did made it look so lovely.

I totally love the pink. I keep running across jibes about people being surprised that you had the tulips and that makes me sad. My house is so terribly cluttered that I can’t really appreciate my beautiful things because of the visual noise. I hope that one day I will be brave enough to really declutter but until I do I can still appreciate what Dawn has done. I was telling a young struggling mom tonight that she doesn’t need a bigger house she needs to minimize and the sooner she does the better but it’s really amazing how invested we are in our things to the point that our relationships can actually be put on the back burner. Who cares if I’m the homesteading, quilting, canning,queen if my kitchen and living areas are so cluttered that I can’t have company😢

Hubby and I did this unintentionally when we got new bedroom furniture a few months ago. We have both definitely become protective of the space, it feels more peaceful, and we've been sleeping better too!

Not sure I’m actually a minimalist. I was just thinking how cute peachy colored chair cushions would look with that Fiesta vase. Lol. Plus that color scheme is nice. Soft as if it’s gently whispering to you. It’s a little pop of color but it’s not a “screaming” pop. Softens and warms everything up just a bit.

I am 75 and really enjoy your channel Thank you Dawn for fresh ideas and pleasure you give me. I am a lifelong minimalist and life simplifier.I have always found too many possessions a burden.I absolutely have to have counters as clears possible . I only have a large toaster and air fryer out. I would love nothing.

This is very timely for me. I’m moving to a new apartment next month, and I’m going to try this out. I’m only going to unpack what I absolutely need/love. What a perfect opportunity to declutter! Happy almost spring, Dawn! 🌸

I just did this unintentionally in our master bathroom. We had the shower remodeled, so everything came out. I've only brought back in 1 decorative piece. The rest I've decided to donate. I'm loving the simplicity and leaving the new shower as the focal point.

I love this method! I almost always used it when decluttering my old room, but I never though of the 24 hours wait. I find it funny that you say that the room is pretty minimal already, but then you have three entire shelves dedicated to (and full to the brim of) decor items.

Bananas release ethylene which makes fruit and produce around it ripen faster, which can lead to things going bad quicker. Just a heads up that if it's trapped in a cupboard that everything could become soft or brown much faster.
@Marty_0724110 ай бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. Dawn, everything looks so beautiful and fresh and minimal - I love it!! Love the decor! I think a little fruit bowl on the island for the bananas could be a good idea without being too much. The two tiered fruit basket looks great but I see how it could become a bit much over time with how tall it is. Let us know how you go with the fruit in the cupboard!

@@Marty_07241 I was thinking that the wire fruit basket, with its grid pattern, created visual clutter. Maybe put the fruit in a simple, smooth bowl. Less visual clutter, but the fruit still visible and won't go bad so quickly. 🍌🍍🍎

Two weeks ago we bought a new mattress. We removed everything from our bedroom, deep cleaned and only put back what we wanted in the room (not much). It feels fantastic and the other stuff mostly is being removed from our home, except a few items that have a new place to reside in our home. I love the idea to do this and reset a room more frequently.

4:04 It might be helpful to check to make sure that the old fiestaware plate isn't radioactive. They didn't stop using depleted uranium oxide to make the dishes until 1972.

On the stairwell, there's a ledge that makes 3 sides of a square, that you can put decor on. I had a lot of random things on it, mostly sentimental items. I recently (a couple of months ago) decided it looked too cluttered. So I removed everything, and left it blank for a few days to decide what to add back in, if anything. My kids hated it! They thought it looked too empty! I eventually decided to add fake plants, and they helped me decide which ones to buy. I love it now!

We are renovating most of our downstairs. We had to empty everything. I loved adding my favorite things back in and stopping at a comfortable point. Any excess in our closets are going and we are being realistic about what we actually use.

Love the slightly different tones of peachy/orangey/pinks! Just like in nature. Our eyes need different tones of the same color and some texture/pattern. It is so nice when you declutter enough that you can actually play with colors and texture and feel what is just the right touches in the right amounts for the moment. And just like in nature, those have to vary throughout the year. We are not crazy for wanting to rearrange decor every few months. We don’t have to make huge changes every time but I do believe it is a human need to have varying colors and interest in our environments. It also validates me as an artist. I could totally see a large vertical piece of juicy art to the right of your kitchen window. Not a forever commitment, but I’d be thrilled to see colorful art tried in your beautiful “clean-slate” of a home! 😁

I recently realized I haven't done this (and other similar minimalist tricks) because my house was still full even though it wasn't bursting and crowded like it was before. I'm just now getting to the point where I have extra space in closets to tuck things away as a trial to see if we miss it. I didn't want to do it before because I didn't want piles of boxes on our guest room or office floors. Excited to give this a try. Thanks for sharing! Also, I loved her book The Cozy Minimalist! 😍

I bought the same butter dish you have and I also wanted it along with my salt and pepper off the counter. I bought a clear shelf off Amazon and just screwed it directly in my tile backsplash next to my stove. It's SO much better than being on the counter but yet accessible bc it's still out of a cabinet.
@msplum330610 ай бұрын
I put a dish towel around/over items that must set beside my stove when cooking something that splatters. Don’t put fruit or vegetables near each other on counters, in cabinets, on shelves or in refrigerator. They give off gases that cause the other to rot/breakdown faster. Interesting idea, but kinda loses the point to remove things to only purchase more items to take their place - like new decor w/out getting of the old removed items 🤷♀️I do like the idea of emptying a room, professional interior decorators do it all the time.

Love the idea and the new vintage vibe. But, as an outsider, looking via a screen, the shelves seem too cluttered to me. I would move that big greenery pice from the middle shelf where it seems “stuffed in there,” and overpowers. I would try IT on the top shelf and work your vibe down from there. The napkins or mats seem like too much, too. The coffeemaker placement seems genius to me. How do you like it as the days go by. Butter dish goes nicely and doesn’t stand out or disrupt your decor vibe. Now, I have to get up and take my own advice, as well as yours. Great work.❤
