Fun fact number one I've learned.. any mattress that you sleep on away from your home will not feel as good not just because your mattress is the best one ever but because you're spine automatically gets used to what it has been sleeping on and there's a period of so many months that it will take for your back to adjust to any new or different type of mattress. Fun fact number two that I have learned.. someone once said be lazy and put things right away immediately instead of setting them down on a hotspot in this way you can say I'm lazy I put it away the first time so I didn't have to do it a second time meaning that you would do it a second time if you just tossed it somewhere the first time. Fun fact number 3.. if you buy the peanuts at Costco the Kirkland brand, it is so worth it because they are so good you will snack on them everyday plus that is very healthy! I would like to say this is my opinion but I really think that it could almost be close to a fact that it is worth it to pay for a Costco membership because when you need something such as good towels for your bathroom or really good quality veggie burgers or good quality clothing, it is very much a good deal there as long as you avoid the impulse buys which are not that hard to avoid because since a lot of things are in bulk you don't need that much of something anyway. But I've done the math and it really is worth it to buy say the paper towels at $18 for a package of 20 rolls or more that's cheaper than the dollar store and there's such better quality paper towels. Just wanted to share these tips in case whoever reads this could be blessed by it!

I've been watching you for years! You asked what we did today. Kids were in school, husband at work and I had the day off. Instead of doing mass-organizing, as I did in years past, I rode my horse for several hours. Guilt free. Less stuff means more time with the horse, which then makes me a more present wife and mother. THAT is why we do minimalism!

This comment right here! Yes! Thank you for sharing! I want more time to ride my horses as well and at first I thought it a bit of a “selfish” reason for me to declutter, until I realized I’m spending hours a day “cleaning” around all of this clutter and would much rather spend that time with my family and my horses. Glad I’m not alone!! It’s amazing how some horsey time makes me a more present and productive wife and mother❤

Just buried my 90 year old grandma that raised me. She was a lovely woman, but a hoarder. Even her tiny assisted living apartment was stuffed. Going through it, trashing most of it, even sentimental, it all hits home. It's stuff! All stuff is headed to a landfill. Keeping her stuff doesn't keep her. She's in my heart and mind forever. Thank you! In the past I would've brought most of it home. Now I can separate the stuff from the person. Life is so much bigger than stuff, and with less stuff we can greater live life!

My husband loves when I watch your videos, they always inspire me to get something done. He prides himself in the fact that he moved back to MI with everything he owned in the back of his Ford Ranger. Ten years married, 3 kids, and owning our own home later, he gets stressed by all the stuff. When I started decluttering, he was giddy. Now that I've gotten to the point where my inventory is easily managed, I am too. I still have areas I know I can improve, but it's only been 6 months and I have learned to give myself grace in the process!

I watched your videos long before I started to declutter my home. To tell you the truth it took a lot of watching for my mind to finally say "you need to do this!". My husband was all excited because if he had his way he'd give/trash everything we have! We've almost finished our enclosed garage, which is my office, all my crafts and over flow like your basement. That was a car load! We had a leak last week that had totally soaked ½ of my dining room carpet (it was leaking for a while as we just don't go in there often) which forced us to move furniture. Had to empty my entire hutch and doll curio. While the contents were all over the table and in other rooms I boxed up so much nice glass vases, etc that I really haven't used in 32 yrs of marriage. I did keep my china and antique plates that were in my family forever but ended up with another car load! My hubs pulled out of the driveway so fast afraid I'd go get something back out to keep! Now onto another area.

I always used to look at your minimal kitchen and think. Never impossible for me! Only recently in the last two months my life has changed and I’ve decluttered about 60% of my stuff. Freedom at last! I cannot believe how simple the concept was until: 1) i went on holiday to new york with hand luggage only and my stress and bp was so low! 2) i came across your videos about having less inventory! Duh how could i not have realised this sooner!!! 3) the silent to do list. It was this video that clinched the deal I just love you and Diana and your spiritual approach. I am Muslim and can totally relate. Your family is so cute and amazing, you really are an amazing friend to all the thousands of people who watch you. I worked on washing my dishes and clearing off the dining table while watching this. I’m a 1st grade teacher, and I have started the habit (this year) of finishing my lesson plans before I leave school on Friday. I even make any copies we will need the next week. I come home with such a feeling of accomplishment and peace of mind. Even if I don’t get home until 6:30, I know I have the whole weekend to do whatever I want. This new habit has encouraged me to use those random 15-30 minutes of “free time” to get something done for the upcoming week. Sometimes I’m out of there by 5:00 on Friday, and that’s doable.

I am so thankful for you!! Back in April this year, my husband and I uprooted our family (3 cats, 2 kids) and made a huge change in our lives. We sold our large house and bought raw land and moved into a *tiny* travel trailer. We did this quickly. We saw a narrow door open for our family and because I had already been following your show and minimizing our stuff for months, I had the confidence that I could get rid of almost everything and go the extra mile to minimalism. We did keep a few large furniture items in a tiny storage unit but most everything from our 5 bed 3 bath house is gone. We live in 180 square feet now with plans of building something very, you guessed it, minimal! We got creative with space. We are constantly reevaluating the things that take up the small space we have. We spend so much time outside. We have more time as a family because cleaning and organizing doesn't take up all of our mental space. We are living our absolute best life!!!! This would not have been possible without your channel and all of the tips and knowledge you have shared. Sooooo very thankful to you!!! ❤️

You’ve inspired me so much, and even though I’ve gleaned great things for years from Flylady and Joshua Becker and others, so much has clicked into place this year from “hanging out” with you since I discovered you this past summer. I’ve dug deep the last few months and can’t believe how much brain room I’ve found since decluttering my spaces. I suddenly have the bandwidth to tackle the really hard things- six dusty memory boxes from the last 23 years of marriage and five kids, my recipes which were scattered in several different places, photos, homeschooling books from 15 years ago… it felt impossible 3 months ago and now I’m joyfully going through it all an hour at a time. When I sit on the sidelines of my son’s sport practices, I take a tote bag full of recipes or memory box letters or photos, a pair of scissors, and a roll of scotch tape. It’s incredible how much I’ve been able to get done in those 60-90 min sections of time. The garage is the next project… oh boy. Pray for me! But I feel ready and equipped to handle it! I just want to say thanks to you and your whole gang for empowering us to be in control of our homes, time, and lives instead of feeling helplessly controlled by them. Blessings to you!

I just watched this video and love that you addressed HOW to assign something a home. Thinking through that is the point where I most often get stuck and surface clutter starts to build up. I know that to many people this step doesn’t require explanation - it is a self-contained, single step. But for me it is a mysterious process. It’s not always so simple as, “Milk goes in the refrigerator.”

This video actually does help me feel like it can be accomplished more easily than I have been thinking it could be. Now, if I can just get myself in the habit of keeping up with it once I do get it done. For me, it is the receipts, paperwork, mail, and such that tends to collect the most. I'm going to do my best to follow your lead. Thank you for this encouraging video!

Love you too Dawn. You are so so right! I am looking at clutter entirely different than I used to, it is easier to identify trash, let go of clothing that I don’t wear and sort through messes that collect on flat surfaces. When I leave a room I look around to see if there is something that needs to be put in it’s home. I love love love that there are empty spaces in drawers and lots of room in the closet because I realize that I basically wear a variation of the same thing almost every day. Thank you for taking us on your declutter journey as it has changed how I feel about my home and it’s so easy to clean.

I love the phrase “has a home” when we think about the things around my house. Hi Dawn. As a veteran/retired homeschool mom of three (all three from kindergarten to graduation) - I didn’t feel qualified to speak on homeschooling until I had one child that graduated and successfully got into college. Every child is so different and their learning styles are too - there just isn’t a “one size fits all” curriculum or schedule to follow each year. Flexibility is the key to successful homeschooling in my opinion 😊 Also homeschooling was more about relationships and character building than academics for me. With adult children I am so thankful for every second we were able to spend together- what they learned academically now pales in comparison to the closeness we share ❤

Dawn- I just wanted to say how much you have inspired me to rethink about the stuff in my house!! I really like the idea of thinking of my stuff as inventory-when I worked as a preschool director I thought of everything in the school as inventory. The snack food, the art supplies, the cleaning supplies, all that stuff. I would regularly go through the items and ask the same questions that you talked about on the video. Applying those same principles to my home is really making a difference and I find my inventory going down rapidly. It’s taken a couple of months, but my house just feels better with less stuff in it!! I’ve been declutteribg my house for years, but it keeps finding its way back in!! I m much more watchful and find more things are going out than coming in!! I have a ways to go but having your videos as inspiration I’m getting more and more done each day!! Thanks again!! Kathleen

I needed this! My best friend lives next door and has chronic pain- full-time RN.I am disabled but live minimally and love to help her as allowed. I brought hangers yesterday, next time I can hang up her laundry. She's not ready to go through the clothes but hanging them up will clean u one area. Clearing off kitchen table is another day. Small steps🥰

What sticks out to me from your videos is value. What do I Value ? I ask myself that now more than ever at 63 and yes am slowly decuttering / not replacing every item as it breaks, wears out. My toaster died months ago and I have not replaced it. I find I do not miss toasted items as much as I thought I would.

Dawn, Great video! I sat in my craft room one day this wk to see how much work it was going to take to declutter it. It's going to take a lot of time. Could you do a video on your Mom's craft room? I make cards like she does & I know I have WAY TOO MUCH inventory. Thank you for making great videos & keeping us encouraged. 🙂

Same here. Way too much inventory for my stamping habit. Just got very serious about decluttering and am in the process of putting like with like; paper with paper, ink pads with ink pads; you get the idea. Then I will go through each category and do serious decluttering. I’m thinking it will take me a month of Sundays, but it will feel so good to bring back my creativity. Thanks Dawn for all your great tips. Like with like. I love that one.

Our home was flooded recently and due to a reduced inventory and a tidy house what we lost was minimal compared to what it could have been. It was also easy for the kids to pack and for us to find important t documents before we left. Now I am in repair mode and reducing inventory even more!

Thank you, Dawn. I stumbled upon your videos about 3-4 weeks ago. You, Dana K White, and Cas from ClutterBug… but mostly you (and Diana) have been playing through my headset since. I have probably heard 30 hours worth of video (or maybe more! Lol!) during this time while you all have motivated me to begin tackling stuff and projects. I had no idea of my problem all these years… I’m soon too be 61, married 42 years to my best friend, my problem has been too much stuff! I’ve been doing happy dances in my spirit when I’ve actually recognized that some of your tips had come to me by simply living in trial and error in the past, but so much has been simplified in my head as to how much, much more can be simplified and how much relief I can offer my overburdened proverbial shoulders if I keep on keeping on in this journey! I’ve come to a time of transitioning in this stage of my life. The chaos of the world being so out of line with Gods best for us has taken a toll on so many in my own personal world…so obviously replicated through the whole world for the first time ever in history. I believe God led me to you all… I believe I’ll be able to be way more effective for my family and community in the not too distant future if I keep plugging away at this. We are here for “such a time as this” … not by accident, but by Gods design. And I pray I can be that “cup of cool water” for a neighbor in more ways than I previously had been. I regret lost opportunities because of my ignorance of what my stuff has been robbing me of, but I’m sooo grateful to not be too old to learn! I thank God for all of you who now encourage me in this … for now, you are that cup of cool water to me. Thank you. I pray God continues to “bless your socks off”! (Something I tend to pray for and say to my dearest friends.) Hugs from another virtual friend! 🤗💖

Watching your videos has become almost a daily thing for me. I am so grateful for your channel. We have drastically reduced the inventory for our dishes in our kitchen. The other day I was at my end and I went to grab a bowl and we didn't have any left because the sink had piled up with me feeling so behind. In that moment I felt RELIEF. It was such a strange feeling like, it's over. The kitchen cannot get any worse and it's still not that bad. That gave me the motivation I needed to load the dishwasher and pull myself up to keep moving for the day. As a mom of two under two this was a gamechanger for our family.

Our kitchen table is the first surface right inside our garage door - and it's too easy to just lay things on it for "just a minute".... Thank you for the encouragement to just set a timer & put like with like. I really just don't want to bring anything else in the house!! Or maybe I'll get rid of the table! 🤪😂🤣

What a great visit with you! I’ve so greatly reduced my inventory that even a flat surface full of crap doesn’t intimidate me any more. Everything has a home and I’m nearly at my threshold. Just a bit more decluttering and then one in one out. The pumpkin looks so cute.

I have always wanted to live in our house with just the things we use. I took all of September and decluttered, scanned, tossed, organized our photos. I went from 5 sentimental bins to 2. I am glad it's almost done, since it was hidden clutter. My Christmas shopping is almost done. I usually finish by Mid October. I then order Christmas card and mail then out Dec 1st. I mail gifts out on that day too. By Dec 1st, I'm relaxed and just planning out the baking to do for gifts. I dont stress over the holidays any more. Not worth the migraines i would get.

When we had a business and children, if I did not get Christmas sorted by Thanksgiving, all was lost. I get a lot of Christmas organised in my brain in early January !!! Now I’m retired, October is prep time for Christmas and I do cards, some baking, and gifts. Habit!

This reminds me of something Dawn said recently (I think she was quoting someone else. She said something like, motivation isn’t something that we just have or comes to us. We have to create it. Some people have just learned to create it and others haven’t. We have to do small things to create motivation to do the big things. Or sometimes we need a “body double” with us. Someone to just hang out with us while we tackle a job or project. Has to be someone supportive and positive 😊

When I first started decluttering everything seemed like “hard stuff” because so many things didn’t have a place, or I had so many multiples that it wouldn’t fit in its place. Now that I have decluttered to the point everything has a place and I have the container concept in order, most everything is “easy” things to put away. I LOVE IT! So easy to tidy. Now I do a nightly tidy every night and it makes it so much easier.

This weekend we went to a pumpkin patch to get decorative pumpkins, took a whole VAN load to donate to the bibles for missions store and bought a couple new hallowe’en inflatables because I haven’t bought any ever! I have only ever inherited it and have decluttered so much out that now I know how much I can keep and where the gaps are. I have never really loved decorating in the past but now that things feel more manageable and my kids are 3 and 1 I feel like I want to start new traditions with them as they grow but also I feel like my brain has the space to do that because I’m not worried I’m duplicating something or that I won’t have room to store it. Seriously thank you Dawn. I found you through Natalie Bennett and between the two of you I feel so much more confident and comfortable in my home ❤

Hey Miss Dawn, I’m new here! I’ve been checking out your “getting started” videos. Your descriptions of how life was before you started simplifying and how as moms we are constantly managing objects, I swear I said to my husband not long ago “I just don’t want to spend all my time moving objects around.” Lol! Everything I have seen on your channel so far is resonating DEEPLY. I started getting rid of stuff about 6 months ago but in the last few days I came across your videos and I feel absolutely excited to dive in even deeper and see what I can do. I hope I can get my wonderful husband on board, but at least with Christmas sales starting this week I’ve asked him if we can not do a big giant toy blowout this year because the kiddos don’t even have enough time to play with everything they already have. Actually I asked if we could spend that money instead on experiences so we’ll see how that goes! Thank you so much for your videos, you are so pleasant and down-to-earth, and I am grateful to be reinspired in this decluttering project and to have practical steps I can take as a busy mom with little kids. Thank you so much!
