So I was just reading from ford forums about using the BBK throttle bodies and spacers. Both 56mm or 61mm both will create a loud whistle due to manifold flange opening being slightly smaller than the throttle body. So solutions were grind your manifold to match OR get a throttle body space and grind that one. Also some throttle bodies have that water heater niple coming out toward egr if you use a spacer it gives you room.

I think in the carburetor days having longer intake runners after the carburetor helped increase lower and torque, and maybe some horsepower. Hence the high-rise intake manifolds that used to stick through the hood. I think that line of thinking was brought to the throttlebody, but it wasn’t nearly as successful.

@TheMinuteMasters 4 жыл бұрын
MOW PEI There’s probably a lot that can be tested with the kinds of products. I drive this truck around for months with the TBS and I didn’t feel any difference. There also wasn’t a difference in fuel efficiency. I think the way to look at the dyno results is to look at the graph and see what RPM range makes the most power. My rpm sits between 1700-1800 at 55 mph. So if the graph only shows power gains above 3000 rpm then there won’t be any difference or gain cruising at 55 mph.

The average gained torque was 4, does it help having the ram air duct from a 460, on a truck torque it’s what you need, how about combining it with short headers and what in the gain with aluminum wheels also the drive test summery gas mileage improvement, 50 ohms per foot resistance spark plug wires vs autozone gold, 60,000 summit special coil vs factory, regular spark plug gap vs hot rod trick, 14 degrees vs factory , underdrive pulley set, 2000 explorer rebuilt fuel injectors, no muffler vs super turbo muffler, taking out clutch fan vs aluminum flex fan, all these mods I’m going to do to my 1991ford 5.8 Bronco, I’m also going to add manual locking hubs and hope for the best gas mileage.

An engine is an air pump. To get gains it has to pump more air with less effort. IMHO a better exhaust (scavenging system) is always the first mod. 2nd mod allows more air and fuel into cylinders (cam) this may or may not get choked by carb and intake which would be 3rd mod only if necessary (not always). These spacers that create rotational air turbulence truly work at the low end of the torque range such as coming from a dead stop and getting through the 1st gear which is where gas consumption is greatest. From idle to probably 1500 RPM, the cork screw on the Airaid is rotating the air which as the intake air velocity increases as RPM increases the air flow over the cork screw is straightened out behaving no differently than had you never installed the device. On my 8.1L 2500 Avalanche The Airaid added a 1.1 mile per gallon more fuel average going from 9.4 mpg to 10.5 miles per gallon. That's a huge performance increase for a truck set up for low end torque and pulling power. Furthermore, you got a marginal 1 HP increase at the top end of RPM which tells you there is more going on potentially at other RPM and gears before peak HP and torque occurs. These devices are meant for bolt on HP improvement on factory equipment. When you start trying to add these to aftermarket manifolds or with blowers and air chargers, there will be no gains. Also, keep in mind every time you make a variation in any environmental factor such as air temperature or air flow, fuel injection intakes including the early TBI intakes, the computer from the MAP sensor, and the MAF, and the EGR sensors etc. is making constant adjustments which makes it tough to isolate where there are improvements. My fuel consumption is a definite performance increase. However, the fuel savings will never pay off the $135 cost I spent on the Airaid.

Right on, man. Interesting from aftermarket cold (hot) air intakes you and I talked about to throttle body spacers, just a no go for HP and torque. So far the one mod that I've done to my '96 Explorer OHV is the 2.25" cat back with Flowmaster Dynaflow 40 from stock 2". She's no longer a slug! Better throttle response and get up and go! There is a resonator still which is nice as I didn't want it too loud. Do you think that if I eventually changed the cat back size to 2.5", that would be overkill? I am kind of thinking it is.
@TheMinuteMasters
@TheMinuteMasters 4 жыл бұрын
Yup, this is another expensive junk horsepower mod. A good sized free flowing exhaust is always a good upgrade. As far as going from 2.25” to 2.5”, I was always told 2.5” is max for a stop 5.0L engine. Granted there probably are guys out there with 3” exhausts on their 5.0s. But 2.5” is plenty. 2.25 is probably a safe bet for a 4.0.
@allmycarsisbroke
@allmycarsisbroke 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheMinuteMasters Exactly. There is such a thing as too big. The exhaust passage needs to flow as freely as possible in a range of conditions while still being just narrow enough to maintain the necessary exhaust velocity to scavenge exhaust gasses, particularly while under load. If you think about water pouring from a hose, if the flow starts slow, the water just dribbles out until you stop supplying water, at which point the last dribbles at and that's it. But if the flow is strong then when the supply is cut off and the water gets to the end it can actually collapse the hose because the water flows with such velocity that, multiplied by the coefficient of mass (it gets much more complicated but that's the simple way to say it), it creates enough energy that it compresses the hose on the way out. But you have to realize that energy is there all the time, and it's only being used to compress the hose when there is no longer a path of lesser resistance. While the water supply is still open, that velocity actually helps to draw water from the supply (to the extent allowed by other equipment upstream, etc.). The reason this matters is with engine exhaust there is no hose to collapse. Instead, that energy gets used to help suction exhaust gasses from the cylinders through the exhaust valves during the exhaust stroke. Any energy your engine is not spending trying to push exhaust gasses out is energy left to do other things. So by creating this vacuum (often missattributed as "backflow"), it's got a similar effect to increasing your air intake capability slightly, except better because then you can do both and all this amplified activity and volume is spread out across the 4-stroke cycle and engine components. At the micro level, a metaphor would be putting good grease on every wheel of a rollerblade instead of just putting expensive aerospace grease on the first two wheels and crappy harbor freight grease on the last two. Anyway, removing your cats (is illegal and) can definitely improve throughput and performance, but only if the computer knows what the new math is and guides the engine to harness the potential. Otherwise you are doing nothing nut making a vehicle that is loud, and stinks, and runs you the risk of legal trouble, and aside from all that, at best it performs the same as always.

@@allmycarsisbroke Thanks Nick! 🤙 I appreciate the scientific input.

Or more simply put, remember this: if you could increase hp/torque across the board by any amount, however slight (and therefore fuel economy) by simply increasing the diameter of your cat a quarter inch, auto manufacturers would just do that at the factory. They have all the incentive in the world to take advantage of low-hanging fruit where performance gains and fuel economy can be improved without unreasonably sacrificing reliability or adding complexity or cost to he maintenance the vehicle needs. This principle helps save me from wasting money on gimmicky "mods" like exhaust diameter, TB spacers, etc. inless and until I can be certain I fully understand what effects it will have. So many people "straight pipe" their cars without a clue or a care that the lack of O2 sensors means their ECU will retard engine timing and make the car perform even worse than it sounds.

@@allmycarsisbroke You are so right Nick! It’s kind of it’s “too good to be true test”. If TB spacers worked so well, everyone would have one. I think it is in the older throttle body injection systems where you could expect a real gain with ot without a performance filter, being just an 1 inch extension on the newer systems it affects nothing in performance, but in a,say , chevy or mopar tbi, it affects not only the volume of the metered throttle space(vacuum) down to the combustion chamber,but the velocity at wich the air-fuel charge moves, something the computer could adjust in the form of a bigger and longer injection pulses, so there would be a noticiable diffrence in performance, at least in my ´93 mopar engine does, there is a big before and after in torque and hp...honestly, i haven´t done any dyno test, but the sensation at a stop light or towing a very heavy trailer is noticiable... my own spacer was built with phenolic material, it also isolates engine heat from throttle body, something else to think about since most spacers are made with aluminum, a ´´heat magnet´´ to the spot it is attached to...just my opinion...peace...

It’s that if you want to know if these things will work in your specific vehicle and build, then it’s best to just go dyno it and see. I definitely think so mods work on older vehicles but not on new ones and some mods work on new vehicles but not on old ones. You could be the exception. You are exactly right! If it were that easy, Ford would have installed them as a performance package.

Now, for those who believe that a car manufacturer does not use all possible means to improve engine efficiency by inexpensive modifications, I am sorry that you wasted your money buying Snake Oil. For you, there are also magnets that alter fuel to burn better, just ziptie them to your fuel lines. I am glad that finally someone made a real dyno test, and not just road test and claim that the car gets more responsive. It is just because your wallets are so much lighter...

You are definitely right! If it were this easy, they would have added TBS to every engine. I’m glad you appreciate the dyno test. 🤙 Believe it or not, there are people who still try to claim TBS work. Lol I guess they prefer lighter wallets. Thanks for watching!

Bro im curious since you have the dyno, what if you upgraded to a copper spark plug and went up in fuel octane, would it balance out with all the extra air you added...Mabe a different balance in fuel to air mixture could help with the #s ......Like the video bro!!
@TheMinuteMasters

I run copper Motorcraft spark plugs in it now. I could have tried a higher octane. Throttle body spacers are known for not working. Even the dyno tech said it wouldn’t work. As for the dyno, I’ve moved out of that state. So I don’t have access to a dyno anymore. Thanks man!🤙 I appreciate it!

not sure either is a waste, if you want more torque how else are you going to get 4lbs for $150 bucks other then buying a different truck to $15,000. Id be more inclined to see a review of the spacer with a nice upgraded OEM style air filter vs the open /cold intake style.
@TheMinuteMasters
@TheMinuteMasters 5 жыл бұрын
old skool83 So the reason I say it’s a waste is I tested the K&N oem style drop in filter. It made 5 hp and 3 tq for around $40. Putting both the space and K&N filter together netted a 5 hp and 1 tq gain. Watch both videos and you will see. I also tested the K&N CAI. Those results were surprising as well.

No the throttle body spacer is no magic mod.. although I feel with a performance intake manifold, larger throttle body and a cold air intake they would all work well together. The spacer is just one piece of the puzzle.
@TheMinuteMasters
@TheMinuteMasters 5 жыл бұрын
FloridaHardwood I think you are right about that. The dyno tech told me that most performance parts assist each other to each a greater overall performance. That’s the reason why I tested the K&N filter with the TBS. Although, the $150 price tag still puts the TBS at the bottom of the list of good HP mods.

Dyno a full intake car, then dyno it with the TBS. Then you can see that it doesnt do shit.
