Every time I visit my local Triumph dealer they ask if I’m interested in swapping my 765 street triple rs for the new Daytona, I’ve declined a test ride on their demo, having scrutinised the Daytona I’ve concluded I already own a better bike, better build quality, better equipment, better components and as you point out far superior performance. I suppose as a 74yo I should be riding something more suited to my age but I love the Striple.

I had the Daytona 660 for a day as a courtesy bike, and I really didn't like it. There was nothing wrong with it, but it just lacked that excitement and fun factor, like you get from the likes of the 765 Street Triple. In my opinion the new Daytone 660 has more in common with Honda's CBR650R than anything else, in which case I think I'd just go with the Honda at that point.

Like me at 65, Bought a ZX-6R 24 years ago, a divorce present to myself. Loved it but by 09 the spine cried enough. Traded it in for Street Triple, nowadays touring on a Tiger. I think these division 2 sports bikes are good for riders with less experience.

Hi TMF and Yes! Your conclusion-I felt just the same about the Trident I had for 4 months earlier this year, lost a shed load of money on it. In theory perfect companion to my T100, in practice I was thinking "better go put some more miles on the Trident". Triumph should have just resurrected the 675.

Totally agree, although I’d put the Suzuki in the same ‘meh’ category. RS660 is a hands down winner (but price excludes it though). The CBR650R would be my pick of that moderate performance/priced bunch.

It does not change the fact it's still a risky brand and besides you could be lying, I don't know you and your experience can't be counted as fact. But the fact is that Aprillia has a bad reliability record. Aprillia even launches bikes knowing they have major engine issues ( they did this with the RS660 thinking they would catch it after the launch and then failed to catch it). I think most bikes today, as well as most cars, are very dumbed down compared to what they used to be. I guess we have to thank the continuous onslaught of regulations to thank for that. On a similar subject I noted that Mr JWW in one of his last videos was saying the sweet spot for supercars was around the late 2000s, not blisteringly quick compared to the 1000hp machines of today, but fast enough and more importantly, much more driver involvement...
@dhc8guru

@@grahamtricker4103 I think it’s perception. Cars back prior to around 2000 just sucked. So it was exciting to ride even the most subpar motorcycles. Also, making a motorcycle pure bonkers is pointless for the most part. A majority also don’t have $35k for a Ducati Panigale V4, whereas 20 years ago a Yamaha R1 was around $11k.

Whilst Triumph are understandably capitalising on the need for this type of machine, surely they are big enough to give us something truly exotic as well, a bike catering for the aging motorcycle community with desirability written all over it. Come on Triumph find a way to give us a bold / colourful machine by adding a fairing to the beautiful Street 765RS. As a loyal fanboy i'm keeping my beloved Speed 1050RS in the hope they sort out a road / sports machine that is way more desirable - and yes i have ridden the 1200RR somehow this didn't hit the spot for me.

Having owned a Trident 660, I think the 660 range is style over substance. The plastic tanks and flimsy build is a step back for Triumph. The Daytona hasn't sold well hence the recent low rate finance deal to try to shift a few. The GSX8R is better by far. Nicely done TMF.

Lots of people commenting here with "If I were...", meaning you're not the target audience😂 therefore the bike doesn't need to appeal to your tastes. I for the record think it's a great bike for the road. I test drove an xsr900 and thought it was too much for the road. You simply couldn't open the throttle for more than half a second and then you were already going way too fast. I've found I want a bike that I can at least rev up and 70-90HP seems to be just the sweetspot for the road I think.

CBR650R, steady seller for Honda. It's been around for years. Aprillia 660, never seen one on the road. This triumph, I know a few who have test ridden and been disappointed. Thanks for this video. I agree with you. Triumph has a great triple engine and a great looking bike especially at the front. Not so much from the side at the front. Looks like they just throw farings on a Trident or something. But it looks great at the front. But not as nice as the honda cbr650r. But the real problems for me is the riding position. Its to lending forward. Just look at the Suzuki GSX8R and copy that then your home. Because the Suzuki has it all except for the ugly robotic front. But its so roomy and perfect riding position and it handles great. I think Triumph is stuck into making a kind of track bike but its not. Make this to more of a road bike like the Suzuki. Thoose who want a track wont buy this anyway. Im not into track riding at all. Triumph you have to decide what your customer are track riders or road riders who prefers more comfy riding for longer rides. Bring back more cheaper sporttourer. Its not a lot of competition out there except for the almost perfect Suzuki

Basically because the market wouldn't pay the price. When you factor in R&D costs, manufacturing costs and material costs, plus compliance testing and certification, the investment to produce a smaller bike isn't that far off a bigger one - think back to the road going Yamaha R6 vs R1, the basic (over simplified) difference is larger holes in the cylinders! The market however expects (expected) the R6 to be significantly cheaper than the R1. And yes, I know the R6 is only available as a race bike now!

If you have ridden a lot of bikes in your life and better ones than this (765RS) then it will seem a bit Meh! I think the target customer for this bike is someone buying their second bike moving up from their beginner 250 ~ 400 cc bike. It is priced to complete with the current crop of 650-800 cc middleweight bikes that are "okay" but not outstanding but it is different insofar as it is a triple in a world of parallel twins. That being said, if I were going for a Triumph triple I'd get a 765R/RS as they are a lot more engaging and probably more comfortable to ride on longer distances. . .but they are a lot more expensive and not everyone can afford one.

I would imagine if they have this bike, which would be an "entry" bike, and there is no place to move up in Triumph if you want a sport bike (speed triple rr I guess, but that is a leap not move) Triumph it seems will, or should be at least, be reintroducing a new Daytona 765. Otherwise people buy this and then what, go buy a Japanese mid sport bike or liter bike even (price of a Japanese liter is still cheaper than the speed rr). I say it's only a matter of time before we see a new Daytona.

Sounds like the head bearing wasn't fitted properly, when installing, the stem needs to be torqued to seat the bearing, released and re-torqued when installed. If this process isn't followed, the bearing will seat into place under breaking, and a gap will develop between the stem and bearing. So, when breaking there is a knocking/rattle as the gap increases.

It looks great till you get to the rear end. It’s like they ran out of money and then shoved a big number plate bracket thing on it to compensate.

The problem with two lights, with one turned off, is that some car drivers think one light is broken and they flash you to alert you. I've manually adjusted my light configuration for this reason only, I was tired of being flashed!

I remember aeons ago when I first rode a Ducati 916, I complained that one headlight didn't work, and was told it wasn't supposed to!! I agree, it's annoying. I've had an STR for the last two years, having ridden nothing but sportsbikes since about 1990, and love it.

Interesting one Andy it has the looks which I do like but maybe better to buy an old 675 for that fun factor and a lot less pennies that's if you can find a good low milage one that's been taken care of and there are some around too 😉👍

Thank you Mr. Flyer. i think it's a shame that the "sensible" sports bikes aren't really quite enough for most riders, at least we get lots of choice these days. Maybe triumph will produce a 765 version? I think the single running light is merely a cost saving, what do you think? :>)

A couple of things occur to me about your review. The only other reviews I have seen have all been where lady riders were the reviewers. They all raved about the bike and said it was just perfect. Maybe, it is geared to the lighter or more gentle rider. The second thing related to the front lamp. As you live in the UK, it is a construction and use legal requirement to only have ONE lamp illuminated on dip beam. If you want to solve the offset look of the bike, you are going to have to move to another territory! 🤣🤣.

If it's only the look why be bothered? You can't see it whilst on the bike and when you turn the ignition off and walk round the bike you still can't see it. 😊

I own Daytona 660 and I love it. Having said that, I do not have any experience with other Triumphs with triple engines. One big negative is low handlebar position, since this was supposed to be a street bike with fairings. I sat on 765 RS at the dealership and that bike has nicer rider triangle compared to Daytona 660. Also, I've installed shift assist on my bike which brought riding experience to another level. My front.... scratch that... bike's front feels fine; the only quality issue is with the left mirror which keeps coming loose and it moves under hard acceleration.

@@TheMissendenFlyer Unfortunately mirror moves easily even when the bolt is torqued to a spec. I'll probably install lock washer and see how it goes. One more reason why I went with Daytona 660 vs (for example) GSX-8r: in my book triple engine makes the best sound compared to all of its competitors.

Brits and their love for sports bikes 🙂. Here in the Netherlands, most riders choose a naked bike, a sports tourer or an allroad bike. All of them sitting upright and a bit more practical bikes for commuting, touring. You will see sports bikes also of course as well as cruisers but they’re a minority.
