Well I've been riding the 2019 KTM Adventure R for a couple of weeks now and it's time to return it to it's rightful owners at KTM UK. I have said it before. Get yourself along to the BMW offroad course in Wales. Gets you over the tall bike, short leg thing.I'm shorter than you. And you can take a 1200gs (or whatever the latest adventure BMW is) up and down slopes you wouldn't believe. Techniques you learn that you will use even on the road.

Having just watched this video I think I'm more convinced than ever that I am not a convert to the current TFT screen trend, give me a 'propa' set of clocks any day. I understand why you didn't take this bike off road. I had an Africa Twin and I found it very tall, heavy and scary off road. The bike is brilliant. I'm sure that in the right hands it would be great but I'm short and old. I sold it and bought a Himalayan.

Good fair review of a cracking bike, just hits the sweet spot for me. I think KTM made an error sending you the 790R instead of the non R. If l were KTM I'd be getting a non R to you rapid!!

I live on the Isle of Man and I agree that white vans are a menace. I often feel that I'm making good progress over the mountain road on my bike, when a white van cruises past me making it look like I'm standing still. Very embarrassing - they should be banned!

Hi TMF. Enjoy your channel but I don’t think the whole KTM790R series of videos did the channel’s credibility any good without the ability to address its off road credentials. I think you need to at least sample it on a dirt or gravel road. The fact that you can’t put both feet on the ground isn’t an issue in these conditions because you going too quick for the foot to make much difference. Most people at your average motocross / enduro club day can’t put their feet flat on the ground, and they cope by having the confidence to keep going, so I’m sure you could do so in more friendly conditions.

I’m not a huge fan of electronics when it comes to off road bikes. So the only bikes I’m interested in currently is the tenere 700 and the husky 701 enduro. I think I’ve phased out the 790R and the tiger 800 and I definitely cant afford the GS or GSA. I’m also just not convinced that a TFT screen is all that necessary, especially off road. But they look awesome. Great video!

Definitely to to buy yourself a nice Merc Sprinter to move these test bikes around.... Go for the chrome kit, metallic paint and auto box.... Climate and leather.... Must agree with the choice of the BM... but I would have the KTM as equal first, then the Tiger as third. Very fair and subjective assessment and credit to you, you aren’t afraid to say what you think. The seat height does put me off, but as I’ve got a 690, the lightnest counteracts the height issue.

I've watched the series of videos you've done on this bike and come to the conclusion that I regularly seem to reach when you review KTM's. Why is it that they can build such beautifully engineered bikes, which always look so terrible! In the greater Toronto area the white van equivalent is the eighteen wheel tractor trailer (insert lorry). Every 6th vehicle on the road is one of these. Equally annoying as the white van infinitely more dangerous ahhhhhhhhh!

The heated grips are KTM's original ones from 990 era (and maybe before) they really should use the integrated ones from the 1290 series, but add a separate button for them, or more "quick select" button choices (e.g. double press, press and hold etc.).

Nah. Most riders are pussies and only think they need adventure bike. There's hilarious amounts of ie. GS riders that haven't ever riden in gravel roads. It's actually really stupid as there's loads of better options for riding tarmac comfortably. Just a while ago got ride GS for first time and it really isn't the best tarmac bike,it's OK on tarmac. Actually I liked Vstrom shit tons better to be tarmac bike. Then of course bike likes fjr and gtr which are actually made for tarmac riding comfortably. It's simply some hype age for middle aged+ man to get themselves adv's for being bit cooler grandpa. It's OK, I'm middle-aged myself and going to get adv bike. However I'm going for maybe the T7 or Africa Twin myself. I actually want to ride gravel and much more technical roads.

The new Yamaha Ténéré 700 is way cheaper than this, but I think the new ktm 390 adventure could be an incredible bike. No idea when it’s going to come out, or have much it will be, but at the right price will sell really well. Hope you get to ride one for us 👍.

Only that compared to other manufacturers TFTs (check out the TFT on the Yamaha R1, the KTM's or the BMWs) it looks a bit "toy like" to my eyes - only a personal preference thing, if you like it then brill!

As a push-biker I now know why cyclists shave their legs. Close-passing white vans tend to strip the hairs from the outside of one's right leg as they squeeeeeeeze past at 50mph. Cyclists then have to exfoliate everything below waste level to match up. Nice informative video TMF. Still undecided for next year's purchase. SV650 or RE 650 interceptor the current shortlist.

Bought and sold mine at a huge loss in the space of 2 weeks, horrifically uncomfortable over 50mph. Headaches, nausea, I would never recommend one. I'm 5'9" 32" inner leg BTW.

Thanks for the review MF, another good effort and I like the fact you pointed out the faults with the bike. I haven’t ridden the 790R but I have ridden the BMW 850 and the Triumph 800 and I thought the BMW was very poorly finished. The paintwork was cheap and nasty and the green color absolutely hideous. I realise its personal preference, but the finish put me off buying it. I liked the Triumph TFT and thought it was better than the KTM (same as the Duke), but I do agree the BMW TFT was the best of them all. They are both good bikes, but the final win for Triumph is the pricing. Better value for money. In the end I brought a Tracer GT!

Been off for a few days so I didn't react. The normal version would be fitting for me. This one is too high for me. I'm the same height as you are but my legs are slightly shorter; I couldn't reach the ground. Screen is too small, normal bike has a bigger one. Would I the normal bike...no, I'm not going offroad so I prefer an allroad bike like the Kawasaki versys 1000.

I love watching riders mature. KTM will sell 10 R's for every S. Every brand does it. Slap high $ racy bits on it and watch the suckers part with their money. Luckily, they love the rest of us too and make an S (for sensible) version that is usually the far better real world bike.

Anymore, that's how they "fix" all the country roads near me. They drop an inch of gravel on a thin layer of hot asphalt. Every ride turns into an "adventure" ride.

ooh if its like right on your tip toes that would make me feel really uncomfortable especially in the wet, and if i were to like do a sudden break around the roundabout(more so for drivers/riders who zoom pass them like if on a race track, and your like wtf.) i would probably stumble a bit, and if its on a high bike probably fall off. im a pretty avg rider soo for you experts probably no problem :). PS: meanwhile waiting for a white van T-shirt or mug :)

Thumbs down for this one from me TMF, it feels an unnecessary video for a bike that's had a lot of content already (I have no idea why this one has irritated me so much btw, there isn't much more content on this Vs your other long termers....the fickle viewer, eh?) Different note entirely - that heated grub controller looked like it belongs to a set of Daytona grips. A courtesy bike I had was fitted with them and I agree, it's a horrible control unit, that big fat button doesn't have any sort of feedback when pressed).

Mines getting around 70 mpg but then I am still taking it fairly easy running it in. Probably get 60s when enjoying its revvy engine.
