Following your June 2019 monthly MCN update, and the news of KTM bringing out a 390 Adventure, thought I'd review your review of this bike to get a sense of what that bike might be like. Some things I hope they improve: Fuel economy, flow of air around the motor and cooling system, progressive front springs (use the additional wheel travel to incorporate a stiffer section to the springs) and sorting out the ambient light sensor which switches between day and night mode. If I was the adventure bike's developer I'd increase the displacement of the motor to 450cc and reduce the compression ratio to provide the same power but increased torque, better fuel economy and heat management (and improved longevity), all natural developments from a Duke variant to an adventure variant they're probably trying to address without increasing the capacity anyway (in my opinion cheaper and easier to just increase the stroke of the motor).

@8:12 The Duke 690 weighs 148.5kg and the Duke 390 is 149kg according to KTM. I think the perceived flickability is down to the 390 and 125 small size and perhaps steering head angle.

I'm close to 2000 kms on mine, I have a few remarks, might be interesting to look for yourself: - around 120km/h I'm sensing some steering wobble, it's quite unnerving if you're not used to it and I wonder if it can be fixed with a different front fork kit. I'm quite lightweight myself, might be sprung too stiff for my weight. - there's something happening to the top corners of the display, could be fluid sitting between the plastic cover and the display, but I've hardly ridden in the rain and it seems almost as if it's caused by heat. Very weird. - some of the screws/bolts are cheap and already show signs of surface rust (bolt for the exhaust bracket for example, and some of the black screws near the bottom of the bike). - kind of tricky to keep a steady slow speed, could be because it's a single, or because of the fueling, but it's kind of nervous and much happier just revving and letting go than keeping a steady throttle. - engine stalled on me a few times when I got a bit playful with the throttle at low speed and with the clutch pulled. I had the same issue with my old 690 SMC. - got some horrible resonance from the headlight unit at low revs. Turns out the bolt in the top of that middle aluminum bit was loose. Be very careful tightening it, since it seems it's screwed into a plastic piece. Tightening it slightly helped, but I can imagine it shaking loose again in the future. Other than that it's been great, very grippy, plenty of power and lovely sound. Did a two-up ride to the beach, worked lovely. Passenger was comfortable as well (just tended to slide forward of the tilted seat when I braked.. fun for dates ;) ).

You may screw it together with a rubber spacer, so it absorbs the vibes. For the heat, it might be higher the first thousands of kms because of the moving parts break-in.

Paid for it last Friday... waiting for the plate. Might be ready tomorrow. I'm 31 and it's my first bike, I only had scooters before but I rode a KTM SMC R for a week, loved it and hated it at the same time: super fun but too high for me(I was on my toes and I wouldn't feel comfortable taking my girlfriend with me), painful seat, jumpy engine, no abs(it was pre 2012). When I heard this has a kind of supermoto riding position but lower and more comfortable seat, less power thus less insurance, smoother fueling, abs, anti hopping clutch... I am surprised KTM have not made an adventure bike from the 390 base, something like the old 640 with a bit of fairing and bigger tank. 21-18 wheel combo and 250 mm suspension travel would be a very practical go anywhere bike, with around 50hp and 140kg dry weight. 690 adventure R is just a little to much and not enough in some regards.

Hi there, another great video as per! Got a bit of interesting one so I'm wondering if you could lend an expert eye! A2 is currently coming up and at the moment I'm stuck between the Duke and RC 390 bikes. I've been with a YZF for almost two years and the KTM would be the next sporty progression however I've ridden the RC 125 and the bars were wide (not very sporty) the fuel tank is small, the looks leave a lot to be desired especially in comparison to the Duke and the Duke has loads of cool little extras like the TFT display and the LED headlamp. Having ridden both, what are your thoughts on the better of the two? Is it better to go for the rougher (and more expensive) RC for a sporty machine or would the Duke be the better one to go for?

Love your videos on this! I'm still in doubt what bike to buy, but trying to pull the trigger this winter. I've got a full license, but never owned a bike before. I'm 1.86m/85kg with long legs and will use the bike partly to commute. Will the 390 be too small? Will the difference in HP (72 on the ER6n and 44 on the 390) be missed within 2-3 years? On looks the Duke 390 has the slight upper hand to the ER6n, top speed doesn't interest me and both bikes are not made for a weekend touring but will do when needed. Any advice will be welcome (obviously I'm taking them for a test ride soon).
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
I'd take the Duke, more fun than an ER6 despite the power difference - I think you'd get bored with either after 2-3 years......

Looks fantastic! I had the first edition of the 390 and loved it. I hope they've fixed the stalling issues that the mk1 suffered. I've heard the fly-by-wire throttle should solve it but I'm just passing along 'www hear say'. I'm no expert. Ride safe!

Not stalled on me yet!

looking forward to hear from you about the heat that it throws up when riding with in the city limits , as i learnt the older 390 has heating issue ....btw great review TMF
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
No issue with heating thus far - the fan is a little noisy but nowhere near as bad or eager to cut in as it was on the RC390 I tested a while back...

Can't believe they have run the exhaust so close to the rear shock. I hope there's some serious heat shielding there or the damping could be badly affected. It's the 125 with 3x the power, so I'm not surprised it's fun to ride!

Really looking forward to your overall thoughts on this bike. I crashed my mt09/zf09. I'm really considering this bike and hoping it will be enuff for me day to day.
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
Well the power on the 390 is obviously down on the MT09 but the fun factor certainly isn't - I've not been riding this around thinking "this bike need more power" - really enjoying it....stay tuned for more soon!

Hey flyer :) Woudl this bike be small for a 6-foot dude who has inseam of 33-34 inches? Do you think I would hit side of the tank with my knees? Thank you for the review!
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
I think you would be OK due the way the tank is sculpted....

Should be interesting to see how this one 'wears' after a few weeks with you. At first glance, it is a looker and seems to be an almost unbeatable package for a beginner. After reading some of the comments here though... somewhat sobering.

Another great review. I saw some early reviews on this bike and there were some complaints about an annoying engine fan coming on at the faintest bit of engine heat. Have you noticed that on your bike?
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
+PistolPete63 Yes, the fan is quite loud and has come on a few times - but it's nowhere near as bad as on the RC390 so not an issue for me (especially here in chilly old Blighty!)...may be a problem in Texas though!
@pistolpete63217 жыл бұрын
TheMissendenFlyer exactly my thoughts! Must take one for a test ride some weekend and see how she does in the Texas heat!
@sullybiker65207 жыл бұрын
It's a pretty high-output single for its size, a bit of heat is inevitable. I think you'd probably get used to the fan.

I'm still surprised there are 125s like the MT125 and YZ etc around these 300cc bikes price range. Totally makes them 125s pointless IMO
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
Well in the UK you still need them to ride your CBT and if you have "L" plates....
@bikersquest7 жыл бұрын
Not the 4k 125s you can just get the YBRs and CBFs which are much more reasonably priced for what they can do, there's not much point getting an extremely well finished 125 when the same money gets you these much nicer bikes 300cc+ even new SV650s can be had in the 4k mark

Really loved your videos buddy ! Ride safe!! I also got a question for you if you could answer to me that would be helpful.. So my question is how do you compare that model to the : MT03 / Z300/ /CBR 300 / GSXR 250 ? (its about the same family ) And how is the different between the Duke 390 to the Duke 690 but limited to A1 License ? P.s : there are rumors that there is a prototype Duke 790 on the go anything you heard ? Appreciate your answers cheerio m8 :)
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Amir - well I've not ridden those bikes so I can't really comment on the first point. And I think they are more than rumours about the 790 aren't they?? ....I'm anticipating it breaking cover at the annual bike shows imminently....

How is the throttle and fuelling? I had the previous version Duke390 and it would cut out, stall, and jerk around in 1st gear. Scary almost at traffic lights.
@sparklife39377 жыл бұрын
I have a previous version 125 and it suffered from the same issue. From other reviews iv watched/read the fueling is far smoother. It better be anyway as i'm planning on getting one next year! ;)

Moto briguy I have the 2017 Duke 390. It definitely jerks in 1st gear (hard to drive around parking lots), but doesn't stall or cut out. Maybe it's because it has ride by wire.

What is the longevity of single cylinder thumpers compared to their twin and 4 cyl counter parts? Are they just as reliable or do the twins and above tend to get more mileage before they require a complete rebuild? Love the content mate!

I'm looking for a 4th bike, it's down between this and the MT-09. I already have a MT-07, Honda Fury and Suzuki burgman 400. I am in love with my MT-07 and the logical choice seems to be the MT-09 but at the same time the 390 seems like such a fun little bike and 4k cheaper. Any thoughts since you have had a chance to ride both ?

I've never owned a KTM but I have ridden quite a few and have to say the quality as far as I'm concerned stacks up very well against the competition....I can't of course personally comment on the very long term reliability as I don't own the bike, but I personally wouldn't expect a problem providing the bike is properly maintained...

To be honest, I recently bought an 2017 BMW S1000R over the KTM 1290 Super Duke R because KTM only offered a 1 year warranty vs BMW offering 3 year. If KTM reliability isn't to be doubted, I think they should up their warranty period. If they don't trust their product to last, I don't see why I should.
