Testastretta` has been used before and means narrow head, which comes from the more compact cylinder head design that debuted on Ducati`s liquid-cooled twins with the 998cc 996R in 2001. These had much more modern, narrow 25 degree angles between the inlet and exhaust valves (previously these were 40 degrees) resulting in more compact and efficient combustion chambers, with room for larger valves. This remains the same in current Testastretta engines, instead the 11 refers to degrees of crankshaft rotation (no one`s ever claimed Ducati`s naming systems were straightforward...), the amount it turns in the period when all the valves are open at the same time. This is called overlap, and overlap angle is the degrees of crankshaft rotation that happens while they are, in this case 11. You might expect the inlet valves to open and let in the fresh mixture only after the exhaust valves have closed and when the last of the exhausts gases have been expelled, but it was found long ago that efficiency was improved if you start to let the inlet gases in while the exhaust is still flowing out. Overlap is important because of the gases` inertia. When you open the inlet valve the gas close to it is stationary, and it takes time to get moving. This process is enhanced if the exhaust gases are still rushing out as they draw in the inlet charge, but if the overlap is too long, the inlet gases will also start to flow out through the exhaust before the valves close. Ideally the valves will shut just as the inlet gases reach them, and while you can achieve this at a steady engine speed, you can`t do it across the rev range. At low revs, the gas has more time to fill the cylinder and a large amount of overlap will mean a lot of the inlet charge is lost. Rev the engine hard though and lots of overlap improves efficiency, as there`s less time for the gas to fill the cylinders and little or none is lost. Overlap is a major factor then in determining the nature of an engine: high performance engines have lots of overlap, but tend to run rougher, with worse emissions and efficiency at low revs than similar ones with less overlap. The Multistrada is a good example. Its engine is directly developed from the Testastretta Evoluzione (the bigger capacity Testastretta developed from the 999) in the 1198, which makes 168bhp. This has an overlap angle of 41 degrees, good for high rev power and efficiency but less suited to slower running. The Multistrada would be expected to need better low rev manners and torque, hence the overlap angle has been reduced to 11 degrees. This is a major influence in the power reduction to 148bhp, and also means torque, smoothness and fuel efficiency at low revs have improved compared with the 1198.

Yes I agree Andy - bigger isn't always better and usually means a lot more cost - I've never regretted buying my 899 rather than the 1199/1299 Panigale or indeed my Street Triple rather than Speed Triple....
@KingCast656 жыл бұрын
Yup. I have a DS 1000 S and with that engine technology no way would I ride a 620 but on the modern bikes yes the smaller ones are preferable. I have four different Triumph liter triples and my next bike would have been a Streety had I not got the Duc.

Hi really enjoy the reviews. So here’s my 2penny worth. Test rode one of these from our local dealer in March 2017 shortly after they arrived. I was very fortunate and grateful to have the bike for a weekend and can agree and confirm many of the positives you have described. I rode the bike over 250 miles in largely poor weather and these were some of my observations. The bike’s brake disc carriers front and rear had rust on them despite arriving with me with only 170 miles on the clock. I rode it through rain and felt as if my under carriage was cold (good rukka gear) it was the spray coming from the rear wheel running down the pillion seat and on to my seat that was making me cold. This water also made its way in under the seat near to electrical components. My fluorescent bib, trousers, jacket arms and back of my helmet were plastered in road dirt (I made a video of it and took pictures it was so appallingly bad). The small oem rear guard appeared ineffective. When I stopped for fuel the inner points of the headlights had condensation in them and when I washed the bike the headlight had numerous droplets of water in the headlight. Lots of, if not all of the reviews of most of the bikes take place on dry or indeed warm climates. In the northern hemisphere I would suggest that some real weather usage would give a more realistic view. Nice bike but as a replacement and enhancement for my trusted Honda Transalp 700 not even close. Rust at 170 miles!! I bought a BMW F 700GS which at a year old had lots of extras and was £4500 cheaper. Keep up the good work..kind regards Jak

Great review tmf. I had been waiting with great anticipation to what you views would be about this bike. I have one since may only it is white. For me it is a real good all around bike. I have put a spacer in at the bottom of the screen and that has done away with all turbulence and will not be looking for an after market scree. For me it has plenty of power and is really easy on the juice. Good handling and power brakes and note.

Thanks TMF for another great review. The Multistrada is one bike that always looks much nicer to me in person than the photos. I do like the looks of them but I bit too much black plastic for my liking on this model. For a premium bike and a Ducati I think they could have tried a bit harder on that score. Plenty of choice now for this category of bike, great!

Nice review TMF. Interestingly I test rode one when they first came out as I was in the market for a new bike. I owned a R1200GS TC at the time. I loved the look of the Multi but was very disappointed when I rode it. I found it was a bit 'budget' all round (plastics, switch gear etc.) I ended up buying a 2017 GS Rallye. I suppose deep down I'm loyal to BMW and like the fact that the GS is more of an all rounder as I suspect the 950 Multi would not appreciate to much off road.

@busterrabbit7 жыл бұрын
MV Agusta? The MV factory seems to go from crisis to crisis. Now they are apparently going "more upmarket", they say to be even more exclusive. Personally I feel it's because they don't sell many bikes anyway, too flawed and too expensive already, and in the UK very few dealers, and the parts support from the importer (or possibly the factory) is rubbish. There are better bikes (even triples) for less money.
@lestaylor77677 жыл бұрын
Have been looking at the Tracer 900 for some time it appears to be the best option for me, however after watching you video on the Multistrader re-considering. I watched your Vlog on the Tracer and you were impressed. So for casual rider with a few long distance (mainly UK) planned trips this year what would be your comparison list? Price difference has to be considered but is the Multi really worth the extra. Would apprecaite your feedback.

Beautiful machine... I don't find many adventure bikes beautiful but Ducati (and Aprilia) sure can make the design work. I'll take one for a test ride next year when the weather here permits, although I'm not decided to buy one yet. I didn't like the turn indicators though, I'd say you lay it down, you buy new handguards - and that's quite expensive. It can be a bother on gravel... As a tall person I like the fact it's reportedly as big as the big one; Japanese bikes can be quite a problem for tall people.

Hi Miss, competition wise you didn't mention the MT-09 Tracer, which was the bike my wife ended up buying after visiting the Ducati shop in Peterborough. Problem with this (beautiful looking) Duke, is it's so much money for so little returned, especially when compared to the competition. You'd be hard pressed to find better value for your money than the Yamaha. And my missus is 5 foot 8, and she couldn't get both feet on the ground on the standard seat. I think you must have stretched a little riding those big KTM's 😁. Good vlog as always young man, even if I don't totally agree with you. 👍

I took the 950 MS out on a test ride along with the Tracer 900 and the Tiger Sport. Really liked the MS more than enough power for me, and the exhaust noise is good for stock. Handled and braked great. The seat was a bit on the hard side, resulting in numb balls after an hour. But not a bad as the Tracer. The screen adjusted easily. I was sorely tempted but the Desmo service costs were a concern and I just couldn’t get a deal that fitted my budget.

Thank you MissendeFlyer for yet another lovely review. Me and my wife enjoy watching your reviews very much. Actually the Multistrada 950 review comes very timely as we are looking into it as our next bike. We read a bunch of other reviews on the 950 and some mention that there is lots of heat coming from the seat and in summer it becomes almost unbearable in especially slower traffic. I know its December now, but I wonder if you experienced any kind of heat up in this are as part of your long term review. Appreciate if you let us know. Also how do you rate its smoothness and vibrations in the pegs and handlebar compared to other bikes such as the Versys 1000 (we watched your review on it recently, too and were wondering how it compares to its 4 cylinder engine)? Thank you in advance :-)
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
I didn't notice any significant issue with the heat (but then I am used to riding my Panigale!!) and as you say it is winter - so any warmth is a bonus here in the UK!! It is a of course a twin so not as smoooooth as the 4 cylinder Versys but as twins go, it was pretty smooth I thought, again no issue with annoying vibrations that I noticed.....thanks for watching and for the kind words - TMF

I did two test rides on the 950 in the week before xmas. It's summer here down under, and it was like sitting on a heater on an already hot day for riding. Hot on my thighs and bum. Less of an issue at speed, but uncomfortable in traffic and at idle. The dealer said that's a Ducati thing and I'd appreciate it in winter...

Hi TMF, nice review as always. Agree, it’s a very nice looking adventure bike. Seen the Mototechniks review in Thailand and it seems very versatile . One concern on build quality, which I hate to see on a bike of any age, especially on a nearly new bike is the front exhaust header looks considerably corroded. I would be taking that back to Ducati. IMO the Testastretta engine is not good regarding catching all the crap from the road. Older bikes certainly copped it on the engine covers, lots of flaking paint. Cheers,
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
I had noticed that too (and have seen it on other 2nd hand Ducati's) - not sure why they seem to suffer with header corrosion so much - I agree, spoils the look of an otherwise beautiful bit of kit...

I really wonder your choice when compare this with tiger 800 and ktm 1090 adv
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
Out of that group I'd possibly take the KTM - that 1050 engine is just amazing....Ducati looks much nicer though...tricky one!

Great review! All of your videos are very informative, I have been mulling over what to get for my next bike in the spring to replace my Suzuki, and have been seriously considering the new tiger, but this really does look exactly what I am looking for, I am the same height as you so the practical aspects that you go through In depth are really useful. Keep up the good work mate :-)

Stay tuned Steve - lots more to come on this one....including my long term review....

Saw one in white and like it. Is it worth the price bump over the v strom 1000 ?

I don’t think so no....

Would you have this over the Triumph Tiger Sport?
@TheMissendenFlyer6 жыл бұрын
Actually I don't think I would - I love the Tiger Sport, have a bit of a soft sport for that big ol' triple and I love the comfort and looks...would be a tough call though as the Multi is a lovely bike....
@gavin62597 жыл бұрын
So what you thinking between this and the tiger 800 ?
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
Well this looks much nicer and has a better quality feel about it - the Tiger is smoother and cheaper though....

I'm looking forward to you testing the new BMW F750/850GS machines once they arrive. It will be interesting to see how they compare to the 950 Multistrada.

Hi TMF, Had a 1200 myself and was not impressed with the build quality and the constantly annoying panniers where the mounting broke. This was a major niggle and one that prompted me to get rid of it. I will be following you closely as next year looking to downsize from my GS Adventure and interested on you feedback. I do get notification when you post up so will watch with great interest. Stay safe and enjoy. Kind regards John
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
That's interesting, I wonder if the pannier mounts on this are any different? Thanks for the kind words, all the best - TMF

How is this bike for a pillion? I had a 1000DS Mutistrada when the first came out, sold it for R1200GS which the mrs loved, but don’t want to go back to BMW again.

I find these top heavy at the best of times so not ideal with 2 up in my opinion....

Well this is certainly lighter and looks cooler! I’d go for the Ducati….

Nice looking bike! Would be great to do a side-by-side compo with the KTM 1090 which, as you said in the video, is a baby brother to a fully-loaded big adventure bike. Wonder how the new and improved Triumph 800 would hold up too against such “premium” competition?

Indeed....hoping to ride the new Trumpet later in the year to find out!

Really enjoy your reviews, so much so, I purchased my r1200rt because of them.Now looking for a little smaller bike and am down to a Multistrada or r1200rs. I have been told that the Ducati's give of alot of engine heat to the point of being discomforting. Can you comment on that?
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
Well I've heard that too but personally I've not had a problem on a MTS - but then I am used to my Panigale (which does run very hot indeed!)....

I had a 2014 Kawasaki Concourse14, great highway bike, but to heavy in the city, so I traded for the 2015 Kawasaki Versys 1000LT, awsome all around bike, have you reviewed that yet ?
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
Well I have reviewed a 2017 Versys recently yes....

Did you find the seat gets hotter the longer you ride? The nearest cylinder head and exhaust header is very close to your gentleman's vegetables, I remember a mate of mine used to call the engine not the testastressa, but the testicleroasta, his was the bigger model, but it did genuinely become uncomfortable after a long time in the saddle. Great review!
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
I genuinely had no issue with the heat on this bike - but then I am used to riding my Panigale!!

Oh dear, sorry to hear that, in contrast I've had no issues with my Panigale (bar the rusty chain)....perhaps you had a Friday afternoon bike :0(
@barbieandbellaadventuresby91347 жыл бұрын
I rode the 950 for a day this year and really enjoyed it. I was a bit disappointed as I was expecting it to be a bit smaller and lighter than its big brother but actually they are very similar which is interesting as you say they feel less top heavy. I wonder if that is to do with the 19 inch front wheel as apposed to the 17 on the 1200/1260? Also if you take the seat off it is an absolute pain to get back on, the fastening bolt on the side is tricky to say the least, something the Germans would never have excepted :-)
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
Yes could be down to wheel size - didn't think of that!

How does it compare to the vstrom 1000?
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
More agile, better quality feel and much more expensive!
@robmcdermott727 жыл бұрын
I have test ridden this back-to-back against the V-Strom 1000. I like both bikes a lot and am struggling to decide on which I like best. The V Strom has better brakes and is lighter, though they both handle very well. The main difference in my experience is that the V makes its power at lower revs, while the Multi hits its mark in the mid range. The multi has more power to be sure and is very thrilling to ride through that mid range, but the V is right there off the bottom end and that's a lot of fun in the twisties. Two great bikes, now which one to go for...
@tennyis287 жыл бұрын
Rob McDermott I picked up a 2018 vstrom it was significantly cheaper and they are known to be extremely reliable. Had the bikes been closer in price I would have went multi. My other issue was no dealer support near me

I bought the 950 in the winter times. No way to try it, havent been riding for 30 year.Was chocked by the ratling in low rpm! Is it shaiking like this,or are the dealers having a laf?
