No one is making a model I want? How do I make it anyways? Kit Bashing Airfix and Tamiya

In my most ambitious project yet, I bash together a Tamiya Spitfire Mk Vb with the navy bits and Griffon engine from an Airfix Seafire Mk XVII kit. With a lot of sanding and re-scribing, I end up with a Royal Canadian Navy Seafire XV.

Thats a brilliant build and great history and commentary. It is refreshing to see someone doing a project like this rather than just kit bashing. My biggest build was making a 1/12th scale 57 Chevy gasser drag racer from a Revel kit I picked up at a flea market. The stock wheels were missing but I got wider slicks and engine parts over about a year. It involved making raised suspension and a new chassis and roll cage etc. I think it is way more satisfying than just assembling the kits.

As a Canadian I appreciate your Canadian theme to your models. I am back in the hobby after 40 plus years and I’m working on a Fleet Air Arm theme. On my desk now is a 1/48 Sea Gladiator and a 1/48 swordfish. After that will be long range multiple engine bombers that Canadian squadron’s flew. I enjoy your work and look forward to see more.

The Revell kit is actually a Special-Hobby one and they were apparently very much inspired by the old Tamiya Spitfires. www.scalemates.com/kits/special-hobby-sh48116-supermarine-seafire-f-mkxv--204700 They don't have folding wings though. Nice end result. The patience was well worth it. So, how long till we should call the Mounties? 😀

Wow! I don't know if I'll ever get brave enough to graft pieces from two kits together like that. It turned out far better than I imagined it would from the beginning. Have you built a Fairey Firefly? Also, I may want to start working with some resin aftermarket parts soon. What do I need to be aware of and how should I handle resin parts? I've read that the dust from cutting/sanding can be toxic. Thanks.

Dang. That’s a super crazy wing folding sequence. Why they didn’t just move the hinges a little further out, then they wouldn’t have had to fold the tips also. That’s one heck of a Frankenstein job there. Well done. Bring cast iron or fabricated from steel, WWII aircraft exhaust most certainly rusted. Just to what extent depends on the AO, duration in service, and actual flight/running hours and of course the construction method of the exhaust.

The biggest modeling project was taking an AURORA 1/48 B-25 and converting it into a B-25H with a solid Nose with the 75mm field gun mounted in the left lower quadrant of the nose. It also required that the cockpit be scratch built as well as the landing gear wells. I also had to sand off the molded in insignia from the wings, fuselage, & tail. I took the easy way out and installed a cockpit interia from a REVELL Doolittle Raider B-25C. But since you couldn't see much of the interior it was sufficient. I made this kit in 1974, so there is a lot I may have forgotten, but I do remember replacing the molded in fuselage gun barrels below the canopy, with some brass tubing to make it seem more legit. I also sanded off the molded in guns from the waist positions and added a couple of Machine Guns from my spare parts box to add to the realism. This was a beast. The nose was carved from a piece of balsa wood and a .58 caliber Minnie Ball was epoxied in a hole drilled into the back of the balsa nose for the counter weight to keep the nose down when sitting on display. I do wish I had pictures of that kit, but that was a long time ago.

My largest modelling project wasn’t a single model, it was a collection of 1/72 models of the same aircraft in its various marks, the Spitfire/Seafire, I had to give up after completing around 24 models, with no two the same, because I hadn’t realised just how many variations there was of this aircraft. To make matters more difficult I was doing this in the early ‘90s when there weren’t really that many good 1/72 Spitfire kits on the market so the project involved a lot of kit bashing, cross kitting and using after market resin parts.

Should you ever accidentally mess up on a manifold or something similar; take a look at 1/8" or 1/16" hollow copper tubing. You can find it pretty easily. It is usually used, in real life; as a bourdon tube to an aircraft instrument or in car racing. It is very soft. Bendable by hand. And with the tools I have seen you use, easily machined down to what ever shape you are trying to make. Just a thought to give you a safety net when super detailing.

Oh! Seafire Mk.XV !! Of the Spitfires and Seafires, I think it's the most well-proportioned, sleek and powerful model. I can understand why you wanted to make this model. Among them, I like the early model of Mk.XV, which has a small ladder area. I believe this 1/72 model is available from the Sword. By the way, although it's a small thing, I think it's a pity that the bulletproof glass on the front of the windshield is not the built in type and the elevator horn-balance is not the large area type.

I enjoy 😉 these vlogs very much. I’m now an old man 👴 but enjoyed building aircraft- but not so realistic in my youth. Also liked the comments 🙇🏽‍♂️!

I've read some really bad reviews though and would have to dump a bit of aftermarket parts into it to make it worthy. Plus it's about $120 here. After their E-2 I'm a bit gun shy of their older kits

Terrific work!! You've got a lot of heart for knocking out this project hah Could you give us a short "how to" on airbrushing a clear coat? Just not 100% sure how many coats are needed, as well as the best method for application. But, don't worry about it if it's inconvenient. Really enjoying your channel!! Keep it up 💯

After the decals are on, I spray it on at about 23 PSI in a heavy coat. Not so heavy that it runs but enough that it look wet.
