Delighted to see you starting this build Steve. I have my own Bismarck on the bench using the mk1 set. Mine has stalled a bit recently in favour of quicker builds so hoping your build will give me the inspiration and nudge I need to get going again with it. Your HMS Hood build series was absolutely fantastic and I am sure this one will be as well!

An interesting and detailed start to the build. I watched a documentary a few days ago, James Cameron's Expedition Bismarck 2002 and there is some closeup footage of the Bismarck from the bow as it heads down the slipway. The vent in the hull you added is visible as is a good closeup of the bow taken head on. If you are interested it is good just for the black and white footage as well as showing the Bismarck as she is today. Looking forward to the next installment.

I have been looking for these mods too, Clearly could not see it........at what time in the video are you specifying...thanks.

@@sandroiavazzo1112 From the James Cameron Expedition- Front view of the bow time frame 12:27-12:37, this shot has what looks like maybe a reinforcing plate or armour(?), there is a shot of the very bottom of the bow showing a circular plate time frame 12:42-12:37. The second reference I found is from the Movie "Sink The Bismarck" this clearly shows the two openings in the hull (Starboard side) time frame 1:00-1:01 this was found on You Tube and is clearer than the James Cameron shot of the same area.

Nice start, I like your docking keel solution less labour intensive than some I have seen. I think you have the A fraims for the pyrovain's in the pontos set, so you could ad the extended pyrovain mount and have a pyrovain suspended by wire. just a thought. Looking forward to more.

@johnmaddox74322 жыл бұрын
Looks like this ship was fitted with sonar and/or a hydrophone system. The reinforcements on the hull are interesting. Makes you wonder what they added to her design.
@TheModelShed2 жыл бұрын
I think it’s still debatable about the sonar John but there’s more agreement about the hydrophones
@chrismangion81302 жыл бұрын
Subject to correction, Bismark did not have that cut out in the bow. Only Tirpitz had it. If you google images Bismark in Drydock you can see two good photos of Bismark in a floating drydock. Further more please note that the anchor teardorps are too small in the kit. Keep it up great work.
@TheModelShed2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris thanks for the info I’ll check that out. at least it’s not a big deal to revert to the straight stem. Picked up about the teardrops I’ll look at those as well. 👍
@johnmclean64982 жыл бұрын
Hard to believe a well-researched reference such as the one Steve is using could get that major detail wrong. Well picked up and kudos to our builder..."No worries, carry on."
@flybobbie1449Ай бұрын
I built the hull, water intakes and port holes. The steps on the rear the Pontos were so small i couldn't handle them. I ended up using cut down and bent staples. Looks slightly oversize but sort of toned down with painting. Modding the anchor bulges sort of finished me off for a while. I did Pontos the first level of upper deck, but when you place the wood deck on model it does sort of re-energise you to do more.

Hi Steve, wot a project! Exciting journey I‘m looking forward to follow! Because you are an experienced Pontos man I want to ask for your advice. Recently I got the Revell Tirpitz Platinum Edition, problem is, that the Pontos instructions are a complete mystery to me. You have any idea where to find Tipps&Tricks or How To…clips concerning Pontos? Or is learning by doing and trial & error the way I have to go? Cheers!
@TheModelShed2 жыл бұрын
You’ve got it - trial and error is the thing: hopefully without a lot of the error bit. The instructions are difficult to follow. I’d suggest 1. study them and try to work out which steps to do when because the instructions are not really in any sort of sequence; and 2. find and download the instructions on line at the Pontos website so you can enlarge them. They’re fairly high resolution so easier to read than the paper provided in the set.

Wow, thanks for your detailed reply/advice and the time it took! 👌

Looking forward to this series. On the Hood you soldered much of the PE, do you solder PE in 1/350 scale? Seems to me it would be to small.
@TheModelShed2 жыл бұрын
I’ve never tried Chris but obviously the smaller the parts get the more care you need to take. Small parts generally hold together with CA glue anyway: I solder larger parts just for the strength it adds to the assembly.

Hi Steve.. Another great build. Couple of questions…What was the purpose of the additional plating you are replicating on the bottom of the ship? And I have often seen you using your drill at a slow speed to start. Do you do this with your finger on the chuck, or, do you have a foot controller or similar? Cheers Geoff.
@TheModelShed2 жыл бұрын
Hi Geoff I’ve no idea what the plates were but I’m just following the drawings. I slow the chuck with my finger - it’s an abuse of the motor I suppose but it’s survived for nearly 30 years 🤞

Hello Steve, Im sure that you have done research but i have not seen what you are doing here with these mods, i have a set of 1:100 full size....7 sheets approx 12 feet long German Drawings in German from Germany of the Bismarck drawn By F.W. Besch as she was in1941 showing none of this stuff, also not seen on the launching video on KZbin, .......unless these are very late mods? I think I need to purchase a copy of the book you have and get up to date, anyway they look great.
@TheModelShed2 жыл бұрын
I know Sandro I’m just going by the reference plans in the book. I think the plating on the underside is too far under to see on the launch video but you can see the shape of the slot in the bow although it is plated over at launch. I believe the author thinks that the sonar equipment was fitted back at B&V when the ship returned after shake down in the Baltic in Dec 40 along with the last radar and other equipment.
@sandroiavazzo11122 жыл бұрын
@@TheModelShedHi Steve, thanks for the reply, yes the 1:00 plans i have are very detailed why these mods were not added is a mystery, anyway if you need any assistance with mystery areas I maybe be able to help with the plans i have, i will take a photo of a page in these plans and post it in a Facebook Group i am in, i will let you know when.
