Check out the sales listing, now live on our website: themodernhouse...
Having spent his formative years working as an actuary, Ross Russell knows a thing or two about calculated risks. As such, there was no better client to commission an experimental house with a 20-tonne sliding shell that can be removed to reveal roofless rooms and a behemoth conservatory-like structure beneath it. Here Ross takes a deep dive into the house’s design and reflects on life in truly versatile living spaces.

Cool house. Can something so complex and large truly be eco friendly? I'm sceptical whether these fabulous 'eco friendly' homes really are, and suspect it might a justification for extravagance. Some kind of greenwashing that will really make no difference because what percentage of housing can be like this? If we all had houses like this would we be solving any energy problems, compared to other more modest systems that may involve multiple dwelling in one building, for example? I have nothing against someone who can build an extravagant house, but am sceptical of the rationalisation for it.

To open the glass part in summer??? Wtf? Has anyone ever been in concervatory during summer? It's freaking boiling!! House would become a huge greenhouse if you leave it open for sunny days... No wonder, that the house is for sale 😅😅😅

but how much energy does all this moving to and fro burn? I'd like to know.. My bivuac had a similar build, but that only needed a slight move of one wrist

No doubt, it's stunning. But how is that glass not covered in pollen and dust and leaves? Even though he seems to appreciate the natural weathering of the structure, it's in pristine condition and that's got to consume a lot of energy. Are they producing enough energy to offset the (presumably) enormous amount of energy required to maintain this home? Thank you for posting this! It's a revelation in design and an amazing conversation starter.

Love it! So ingenious. … Though I think I might have nightmares about being guillotined when the outer and inner door openings don’t coincide! Or when on the loo and suddenly on view to guests in the garden. 😂😂😂

"so much of our housing stock uses much more energy than it should" proceeds to pointlessly unfold house at the push of a button... The maintenance of this transformer isn't sustainable. Also, wind turbines are not a thing anymore.

The oddest thing to me is I thought that was anything but England; it looks like rural land near where I live in Ontario, Canada. But back to the subject at hand: What a magnificent design! So many of the "new" designs in Ottawa, actually pretty well all of them, are cold, boring, lacking imagination. Your collaboration has warmth, in my opinion. I wonder what it costs to build? Of course, in our climate it would have to have a basement, given the increasing frequency of tornados. You elected to use a wind turbine. Did you ever think of primarily geothermal combined with solar to drive the pumps? Or is your land too shaky to do so? Many thanks for your efforts.

I love this house. Unfortunately, this approach is out of reach for the average homeowner. Wish that were otherwise, but you have to be rich to build like this.

Очень интересно с точки зрения инженерного решения. Но ... любые экстравогантности трудны в уходе, затратны и неоправданы defacto. Гармония в простоте. Локация и природа прекрасные.
