Inside A Fully-Renovated Scottish Farmhouse Secluded in The Outer Hebrides | Design Notes

Saffron Aldridge and Scarlett Supple welcome us into their Scottish farmhouse located on a remote Hebridean island. This traditional farmhouse has been restored as a joint effort between business partners Aldridge & Supple, and sits perched above a tidal pool gazing over the surrounding Hebridean moorland.
As we tour the interior, we begin to appreciate the calm and comfort injected into this remote homestead - a stark contrast to the vast landscape of mountains, moors and machair. With startling features, such as the farmhouse’s tall windows and double-height ceilings, Aldridge & Supple forged a symbiotic relationship between the surrounding nature and interior. ‘Your whole relationship is with the nature outside,’ says Aldridge. ‘It’s very important that the inside and the outside work together.’ Watch the full episode of ‘Design Notes’ as we tour Saffron Aldridge’s remote farmhouse nestled in the Hebridean hills.

I rarely see a house where I can see nothing I don’t enjoy, but this house is one of them. Such a change from the sterility of most renovations. I liked particularly the observation that small spaces should be filled with beautiful objects. That is what I have done with my house. I feel that I’m in good company! Not one who gushes over decor, this is spectacular design. The use of natural materials have brought such warmth to the cottage. The heavy wool drapes natural old wood and all the treasures that have been collected along your way. Only questions is there a quest room???

This was such a well thought out project, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a house done as well as this where it’s a ”new build” but suits the location and heritage of it so well. I love how well the textures were used throughout, it gives you a sense of calm and homeliness without having to use loads of patterns or colours.

Exactly my thoughts, I hope there is floor heating. My grandparents used to own an old monastery with window sills so deep there was a desk and a chair there in my bedroom to do homework. In the winter it was unbearable, the walls accumulate the cold & send it back in the room.

Beautiful. Those huge doors look as if they were there for over a 100 years. I love those wool curtains and the feelingof the space with so many textures all around. This is an example o how old MUST be treated. So many people buy old houses then they disguise them as "modern" ones and the result is hideous. When you call their attention they say "it is to adecuate it to modern way of living". I´want to show them this house and video. People can keep the feeling of old buildings and live a confortable modern life if they are clever enough. I guess you realised that I LOVE YOUR HOUSE.

It's a substantial house with generous rooms and yet it's been made to feel so cosy and intimate. Thank goodness they've understood the surroundings and were sensitive in their approach to the property itself. I'm so often disappointed to find ancient Scottish buildings like this on the outside, only then to step into a dull and uninspiring modern crisp white box with filled with chrome and glass as so many people these days either just don't appreciate / understand the assignment, or simply lack the inspiration these properties deserve. Well done ladies!
