I carry a Sig 229 Legion .357 sig as well. I dont have any complaints. I agree with information provided in this video. I dont always carry the same firearm, I also carry glock 43 9mm at times. I like all calibers for different reasons.

So I bought the Glock 32 gen 4 just upgraded awhile back! I got into the 357sig a few years ago. I’m a CRNA I put people out for surgery. I do the same thing as an anesthesiologist does just not a MD. So we had a patient that was shot 1x in the upper left quadrant of the abdominal cavity with a 65gr 2100FPS round and the reason I changed from a 9mil is this poor guy had his insides tore apart. He had multiple liver and kidney injuries on the right side when he was shot on the left abdominal quad. My buddy the surgeon he’s a big gun dude we are in Texas so grew up with them. He found absolutely no fragments or anything but had severe damage. Surgery was 11hrs of non-stop repairs and we ended up not closing just took him to ICU and left him open, with packing of course. But the surgeon finally came to the conclusion the injuries were from the supersonic shockwave. That 65gr round did way more damage than 140gr or higher gr rounds do because the lighter round was moving so fast. So the speeds to send it home. At 2100FPS=1,431MPH/MACH 1.86. Anyway the damage we saw, keep in mind this surgeon has operated on 3500+gun shot victims and he said the only time he’s seen damage like that was with a .223 and higher rifle round. The guy was dropped to the ground because the shockwave hit his liver and sent him into orbit! That was the first symptom then obviously a few seconds later all the other damage kicked in. So literally the next day the surgeon and I went to our gun store and got us the 357 sig with tons of ammo but we got light fast rounds for self defense and still use them years later. I’m using some 1850FPS ammo for self defense. But had y’all seen the damage y’all would switch over. If you don’t have good pistol skills then you probably wouldn’t like it. I’ve replaced everything in my Glock. I have a threaded barrel with a brake so the recoil is non existent. Suppresor is smooth on it also. I’ve had a reloading press forever for my 30 guns just because it’s easy and cheap so I can save money to buy more guns I don’t need haha so i do my own load of a 2100FPS round. I use for my carry mag. The mag I keep in the weapon I have 1850s and then my backup mag I have the 2100 +/- 30FPS.

Making a public statement on your choice of carry round being fully dependent on first hand experience in the devastation conducted on a human target sure wouldnt look good for your self-defense claims in court after shooting someone Einstein.... Use your brains bud

I have a 40 sw glock 22, picked up a 357 sig 10 inch barrel and put it in a pdw conversion kit recover tactical. Got myself a rifle like gun. The 357 sig benefits a lot more from a longer barrel than other semi-auto rounds. The underwood 65 grain 357 sig gets 2100 fps 637 foot pounds out of a 4 inch, but at 16 inch it reaches 1000 foot pounds 2700 fps. at 10 in it is like 800 to 900 foot pounds at around 2500 fps, these are like 60 -70% of the ballistics of a .223 of similar grain size. I use 40 sw as a short range handgun, but when I want more accuracy and power out at longer range Im going with my 10 incn 357 sig barrel setup.

I disagreed last year about the 357sig being better and boasted the .40 I since shot a Sig at a steel tank and at different objects at over a 100 yards. Not only was a 357 Sig far more accurate but the sound that it made and the deeper dents that it put in the empty steel tank made the 40 seem like a weak little pop gun I since sold both of my 40s.Also the Paul Harrell video where he compares the 2 loads in different meat targets Etc he used the weaker side of 357 Sig by hornaday I use the Underwood and gold Load very very powerful major difference.

357 sig is a fine round, no doubt. But it is more expensive, the mags hold less rounds and in penetration tests I've seen, does not perform any better than comparable 9mm ammo. So like you, I'm quite satisfied with my choice and see no reason to change.

Well Done Video!!! I still am surprised that people are on the fence about the venerable 357 SIG load. You've laid out all the major points very well. The Glock 31 is one of the best platforms for this round too! Make sure to try it out in a SIG P226 as well!!

My glock 32 gen 4 is my conceal carry over the many .45 glocks and 1911's i own for the power, the slim design and accuracy. 45 acp, 10mm and .357 sig are my favorite handgun calibers, my time in the us army made me throughly dislike the 9mm, not saying there is anything wrong with that caliber by any means. Excellent video with lots of good information.

Some good points made in this vid. Practice with your 9mm for the cost factor and carry the .357sig. Also by having a full-size 9mm pistol and a compact size .40 in the same gun/format....all you need to do is swap out the .40 barrel to a .357 sig, two guns in one- very practice and you have multiple guns in case of ammo shortage, and you can still use whatever you find on the shelf. 25% more increase is substantial especially when you have recorded incidents of attack dogs taking multiple shots of 9mm but being stopped dead in their tracks after just 1 or two shots of .357sig. There's a reason why the US president's secret service and air Marshall's are carrying .357 sig. Not to mention several LEO's who have been happy with the results. That alone convinces me.

The Glock 31 is a 357 SIG gun that runs PERFECT just with a 40S&W barrel, same mags, same everything. With a 9mm barrel (and for better reliability 9mm mags too) you can shoot 9mm as well evne if it would be more reliable with the 40S&W/357SIG setup.

9mm can be found everywhere, until there's none left because everybody with a nine bought it all up. Sometimes it's easier to find the less common ammo because it is less common. Very high demand for more conventional rounds.

use the 357sig for home defense and carry ammo, and use the 40s&w for range, Why?, because 357sig ammo is more than the 40s&w.

Its a good tactic. .357SIG is simply a .40S&W necked down and thus the only real difference is the barrel. Extractor, firing pin, mags, etc. are the same. For a Glock you don't even need a dedicated conversion barrel like you would going .40 to 9mm, just buy a much cheaper factory barrel in .357 of proper equal size to your .40 barrel and your good or do it the other way around. Although KKM makes excellent barrels and I would consider that in a heart beat if I was running .40/.357SIG.

The problem with .necked down 45 or 10mm cases for that matter is that it requires a bigger gun. A 10mm necked down to 9mm would make a super 357 SIG, but then its a bigger gun and may be just too powerful for fast follow up shots.

I have found that shooting a bonded JHP through steel with a 357 sig works as well as a flat point, the nose compresses into a ball and goes all the way through with no fragmentation and same penetration. Seen it with my own eyes swear to it. btw I was shooting through numerous saw blades comparing it to other calibers.

Thanks. It is true that if you want the versatility of the 357 magnum, then the 357 SIG is not going to work for you. But keep in mind that the load the 357 SIG is trying to replicate (and does very well) is the 125gr bullet at 1400 fps. Thats the 357 magnum load that has the best stoping power track record. Heaveir bullets with greater penetration are better for hunting, as in LSWC 158gr. 1200fps for a 9mm 147gr sounds like pushing it, what manufacturer makes that load? Buffalo Bore ?

From the geek in me its simple to work out, KE produced is 1/2mv(sq) = half the mass times the (velocity squared) very simple, the faster, the better, and a small increase in velocity (speed) makes a huge difference in force :) and we are not going to talk about force over area that is pushing the projectile, bottom line, .357 sig is made to hit people hard at close range, which is ideal for a handgun.

They're referring to having to take the ammunition from others or from someones storage and its not as likely to find .357 sig ammo. Although because most won't use it, they will possibly leave them although they could still salvage the bullet, gunpowder etc so they'll probably take them as well.

Hey BBKnls, as Materferguson pointed out, you can play that same game with 357 SIG. Whenever people bring up a hot rodded 9mm, they seem to miss the point that you can ALWAYS put more powder in a bigger case, so a hot 357 SIG will still beat a hot 9mm by 200 fps. Underwoods 357 SIG clocks 1511 fps out of a G32. Out of a G31 it will be at least 1550fps!! placing the 357SIG in a different world of energy than 9mm.

As long as you chose the proper load, (i.e.- Double Tap, Underwood) you will get that punishing massive energy and speed that will exceed an equal weighted 357 MAG. Given the current ammo situation I am giving this caliber some serious consideration. I carry a Sig P226 in 40 S&W and am having a hard time consistently finding ammo (I work at Gander Mountain at the gun counter so that says something. However, 357 Sig has been easy to find and it isn't any more expensive than it was. Now it costs the same as everything else and the switch doesn't necessarily require a new gun (if you have a 40). So then it's not a matter of why but why not?

To Dion: That's good velocity out of your 9mm and you probably don't need any more power to get the job done. But if you bought a 357 SIG barrel for your Glock 22 you would be able to get around 1500 ft/sec. with certain powder bullet combinations. Since you mentioned getting another barrel for your SIG I am assuming you are a reloader, maybe not, but reloading this cartridge is where it's at.

Patrick Slevin I need to say something else: 357 SIG isn't my favorite cartridge, I'm much more fond of the 9mm. That's just me, I like the selection of 9mm's I've acquired over the years and I find that when I look at the different caliber I always buy more reloading components for the 9mm just because I like shooting it best. I'm just saying I've got some time with a 357 SIG and it's truly a great cartridge it has more recoil and flash that 9mm doesn't so I mainly stick with 9. I've got everything from 25acp, 38-357 mags, 40-45 calibers but like my 9mm

Your crono is most likely way off by at least 100 fps - Speer gold dot 124 +p 9mm will not go that fast from a 4.5 inch barrel - maybe from a carbine. Also the 357 sig has untapped potential that really pops from a longer barrel and 1300 fps for 147 grain is quite achievable from 5 or so inches and 1500 fps for 125 from 5 inches.

It isn't with factory ammo thats for sure. You need to load your own to get maximum performance out of it. Factory loads them to (suppose to be) 1350 ft/sec. They do it because too many people, not familiar with guns, like cops, can't shoot them well at higher velocities. They can't shoot them will at reduced velocities either which is whey FBI is floating the 9mm again.
@FitPhysioTherapy
@FitPhysioTherapy 10 жыл бұрын
EABOY2600 These 357 calibers are not well suited for comparison to each other. The sig is a far far far far better choice as CCW and the mag (in the correct configuration) is better suited as hunting handgun or woods protection from medium size four legged threats. From comfortable CCWs with barrels of 4 inches or less ( total barrel chamber continuum = 4 inch pistol barrel and 2.25 revolver barrel) the 357sig factory ammo will generally EASILY out preform the 357 mag factory ammo using 125 grain bullets maybe even up to 147 grain bullets (with more massive bullets fired from long barrels the 357 mag will out power the sig. The sig is not designed to employ heavy bullets and the magnum is an AWFUL design as a self-defense round in general and particularly when employed from a comfortable short barrel revolver well suited as CCW.

its a great ballance of flat trajectory, good magazine capacity, hard barrier penetration like car doors and walls, long distance shots that are flat out to 55 yards, manageable recoil, great feed, good stopping power, great accuracy, energy as good as a .40 and .45 and sub .357 mag, expansion as good as a .40, .45, awesome penetration, only price could be a factor in why many dont go for it, but hopefully that will change as more people see the valuable round for all its great characteristics

Just remember the chamber pressure is more in the 357sig than the 40 s&w, after time the frame will brake down, its better to down size than go up, for example G31 357sig to 40s&w, rather than G22 40s&w to 357sig. check the to chamber pressure first. I'm not saying it is going to happen right away but though the course of time it will.

A heavier, but a little slower bullet, will penetrate more than a lighter bullet at the same velocity. Modern bullet design has helped to solve this conundrum. The .357 Sig was designed to mimic the ballistics of the 125g .357 Magnum, traveling at about 1300 fps. This it has done remarkably well. If you want to shoot through barriers, like car doors, a solid, non-JHP bullet will do the job, but not have the terminal ballistics in flesh as JHP designs.

You have more space in the SIG so if you want to push a 9mm you'll always have space for more power than in a 9mm case, generally you'll get100-200 pfs. more. Double Tap makes some hot stuff, they have a 357 SIG in 125gr that goes at 1525fps. Id' still stick to CorBon, Gold Dot or Federal for defense loads.

I love the .40 round, .357sig has close ballistics to a .45. (not quite the hitting force or dia.) gotta ask a question, 1425fps or 850-900fps? Thats why iam planning an XD .357 for home defense to go along with my other .40's. Oh ya, .40/.357sig take the same mags!

Accessibility of most calibers is at an all time low :-( I have a G23 with a Lone Wolf 9mm conversion barrel. I'm considering getting the 357sig one too. I bought the G23 and the 9mm barrel at the same time but it took me over a week to get G19 mags. I put a 100rd box of 9mm through the G23 factory magazines and had zero failures. Regardless, I've since acquired G19 mags. The 357sig rounds will feed from the G23 mags no problem. One gun, three chamberings. Accessibility is less of an issue ;-)

It's always amusing that people argue when given the facts. The .357 sig is more lethal and has a more deadly effect on a target. It's just depends on which gives you the most confidence in a self defense situation. I'm sticking with .357 magnum. Either the S&W 640 or S&W 327 Performance. Issues with semis are reliability-could jam and, even though it rarely happens, there is a chance it could go off-bad spring.

I see, I have been wanting to try .357 sig for a while now. Getting a conversion barrel has been hard, it seems everywhere I shop is out of stock, at least the storm lake extended for a full sized m&p. What do you think of .40 tho? I personally would choose a .40 load just because its a wider diameter bullet causing more expansion while have adequate expansion. I see why people would choose the .357 sig (basically a hot 9mm) for penetration and the trajectory thing but to me .40 is enough.

Can you fire a .357sig in a .40sw barrel ? The .40sw round stopps in the chamber on the case mouth, the .357sig will continue in the chamber and the striker wount rech it.

In all my studies, my goal is to hit it 600 foot pounds of energy with anything under .45 caliber. If you’re in that 580-600 foot pounds of energy mark in a .35 caliber round, it does horrific things to the body. I prefer the Liberty civil defense .357 SIG round, because it dumps that 600 foot pounds into the target at 2300 FPS. Plus, it fragments. The hydraulic pressure is absolutely terrifying.

Indeed, when the ammo craze goes "ballistic" (jejeje) the more common calibers dissapear and the more uncommon ones are still around. Having said that. fi ammo manufacturers have to cut down, or if dealers take a hit, the caliber to stay in production and in shelves are the more common ones, the ones in highest demand. Have guns that fire BOTH!!!! a 357 SIG with a 40S&W and 9mm barrel will keep your gun running.

Thanks. If you're a 357 magnum guy you'll like the Glock 31. 357 SIG is a fantastic round. Very accurate, it cracks but it doesnt slow you down compared to 9mm unless you're really sensitive to recoil (to me I barely feel the difference, it feels like a "hot" 9mm). By most police department tests cops shoot better with 357 SIG than with 9mm and that has been my experience as well. The only real downside is cost of ammo but then again how much is your life worth to you? Regards,

No idea, I've lost count. I bought the Glock 31 as soon as it got out, then bought another one a few years later, then a Glock 17. All I can say is I never had a FTF, and if you read other people's experience you see that bottleneck cases feed more reliably. There's nothing wrong with a converison barrel really, my .40 barrel has always worked flawlessly. As I said, its the exact same gun, the barrel is the only difference so it converts from one to the other with no problem.

Comparing apples to apples, 9mm +P Corbon ammo to 357 SIG Corbon, 357 SIG has 25% more power. That's the fact. The question would be, Is it worth it? to me it is. Also, I happen to shoot better with 357 SIG than 40S&W, I can shoot faster and more accurate with 357 SIG, other people have that same experience.

You missed the whole point, TMS was comparing 115gr 9mm against 125gr 357 Sigtp up his anty. I merely pointed out that compared 124gr vs that 125gr the specs didn't end up being widely stanced! Like i said, it's not the end all be all and certainly not THE best. To determin that, there need ALL possibilities taken in consideration. End of the day it boils all down to being proficient with the firearm you've chosen But very good for you that you're getting this 'n that and doing so 'n so.

Underwood 125gr from a Glock 31 is over 1600fps and over 700lb-ft energy. Penetration in gel tests show over 44" from the 125gr fmj...which is basically 3 people! (also slices through most body armour like a hot knife through butter) and 19" from the 125gr jhp. 10mm used to make the most sense for a readily available powerful caliber. But overall the 357sig is better (thanks to Underwood)

.357 SIG is only marginally better than 9mm with traditional bullets, a little more expansion or penetration, not enough to justify a hotter cartridge. BUT, it really shines with light high velocity rounds (2000fps+) as that's the speed where hydrostatic shock starts to matter, any slower than 1800 or so and it's a liability rather than an advantage most of the time

Instead of thinking in a you know what scenario think of a couple guys with guns wanting you dead scenario. Ultimately the purpose of a CCW is self defense, not barter in a post-apocaliptic world. In that case you want the most stopping power per round shot and that 357 SIG does nicely in a normal size gun without compromising fast follow up shot speed YMMV of course, but I find that it has a nice short snappy recoil.

You said youve never had a ftf with .357 sig. How many rounds have you actually fired of .357 sig? Also, saying its more reliable at this point really doesnt have much proof. Of course a smaller bullet going into a bigger hole but saying to practice with .40 and shoot .357 for hd i cannot argee with. I would not rely my life on a conversion barrel, its 5000 more psi than .40 so the recoil spring may not be tuned for a .357 sig. Personally, I like .357sig , who wouldn't? Its a hot 9mm round cont.

Load is a huge factor. You have to pick the right bullet for your gun. There are .380 rounds out there that meet the FBI penetration criteria. The biggest point you have, to me, is feeding. I had never considered that, and that just might be the most important factor that there is. A gun that doesn't go bang does not get the job done period.

Jonathan Norman In order to convert a 357sig to a 9mm you'll have to get the conversion kit ( not just a barrel) the 9mm can't work right with the 357 spring. On the 357 as a back woods gun it will work great for protection against most things ( unless you have very large bear or something to that nature commonly around you, even then I doubt it'll keep coming at you as you empty a mag or 2 of 147gr xtp, etc. into it). The 357sig is pretty impressive when you take it out to shoot for the first time. It left me laughing at my 9mm power wise to be honest. I will be using it to hunt whitetail deer this season, I shall see how it really performs then.

+Jonathan Norman The 40 cal/357 SIG conversion works better than the 9mm conversion because the 9mm has a much smaller head than the 357 sig. But the sig and 40 are the same size head, hence the ease of swapping out barrels.

Good luck with that "head shot". People dont hold still so you can get your "shot placement". And you really cant get your mind/body in a "scared shitless im about to die" state. If you have perfect "shot placement", then you can run away and get out of that situation according to the court after you kill somebody. In real life a 9mm has capacity and low recoil going for it and the rest is "hope". In real life, you kinda just aim in the general direction of your attacker and pull. Hope the round that connects somewhere does enough to stop the threat really. Shot placement is key, but it's not something the shooter has real control over. Most people dont get that on the gun forums. Bullet setback is a real topic of why to stay away from 357sig if you dont pay attention to your chamberings and rotation but that's another topic and argument amongst us enthusiast, lol.

I personally prefer a Glock 22/23/27 (.40 S&W) over the Glocks chambered in .357 SIG because you can get conversion barrel to shoot .357 SIG AND 9mm and have a lot more variety. Also the .357 SIG uses the same magazines as the .40 which is even more convenient and I have heard you can shoot 9mm out of your .40 magazine but I am not positive.

If you reload the 357 SIG isn't any more expensive to load for than a 9mm and it's a hell of a lot less expensive than loading for the 357 magnum in th amount of powder you need to get velocity desired. Granted the SIG can't shoot the heavy bullets but it's great for the 124-125 grain round which is what the cops carried in their 357 mags and it was that weight that got the respect owed the 357 magnum. Usually at 1450 ft/sec and while the factory's don't load the SIG that hot a reloader can do it with no problem at all while keeping pressure within SAMMI levels.
