You bring up a great argument against high mega-pixel cameras. Though, having a Z 7, couldn't you just decrease the resolution to 25MP when you realize you're going to have lots of files to deal with? Then you can increase the resolution to 45MP whenever you choose to do so, for, let's say, landscapes, macro, ect. If price isn't a factor, I'd say the Z 7 is the best choice.

@@TheMonochromeMemoirs Got my Z6 end of May. I have 2 lenses (kit lens) and then got the Z 14-30mm lens. Lack of bigger zoom native Z lens has been a limitation for sports photography. I assume in 2020 we will see new lens options so I recognize this is a timing thing. I have used an older DSLR 70-300mm lens with FTZ adapter but not sure my photos are alot better than if I used that lens with my D7100. May simply be limitation of what to expect with that lens on Z6. I have been really happy with the upgrade and happy with the Z6. Getting used to the AF has been an adjustment process

As far as resolution goes, it's kinda like getting any video resolution above 4K. Look at cameras that are filming Hollywood/Netflix movies and TV shows. There's ones that shoot in like 2.8K (Arri Alexa anyone?). For almost anyone a 24MP camera is gonna be more than useful for almost any use. How many people, even for their wedding photos are blowing things up to any appreciably large format? I doubt that many. Love your honesty in all your videos man. It's not trying to sensationalize anything. Just documenting your true user experience.

In regards to the eye auto focus its honestly really nice its biggest flaw is the activation distance and it does at time struggle with tracking movements. I should point out I am not a professional photographer and i shoot mostly street photography, family gatherings and animals. Although I have a lot of Nikon DX glass, they are unfortunately not lenses that will work well with the FTZ adapter. In your lens recommendation please also include 2 good F lenses that will work well with the FTZ adapter.

Hey William, Congrats for your anniversary! Hope you guys will have an epic celebration day! I agree 100%. I sold my D850 for a Z6, 4 Months ago and there was't a second i regret that. I just love those mirrorless features what dslr's don't have. Actually I just picked up today a Z7 rental for tomorrow's wedding to see how it performs vs. the Z6. I already did some test shoots and I can tell there is a difference in sharpness and dynamic range with the same lens and same settings, but the file size is double, like you said. In low light Z6 kills the Z7, in buffer also. The rest will se tomorrow... Don't mind those idiot comments, most of them probably does't even know what aperture is. If somebody using a Z6 like we do on full speed and saying the new eye AF is great, than he must have smoked something. I am not saying it's terrible but it needs improvements and 90% of the time is useless on stills. On the other hand, the video capability is amazing. I just came back from a week family trip and we did a tons of wake-boarding and surfing and the video just amazing. The full time AF it's very good, i mean it's firkin cool.I would not be able to do any of those videos with the D850. The pictures came out amazing as well, i did propably 5000 images and i would say 90% of the images are sharp.I am very happy with the Z6 and I would not change to anything. Please keep uploading, you have a great channel Bro!! Thanks for sharing!

2:55 That's totally correct. Lots of popular channels pop up here on youtube just because they're good at making flashy videos that look good. Whether they have the talent you have (I checked your web site), is another question and most of them are NOT. They want to make popular videos for the ad revenue and maybe also because they like to be popular. I don't get my money from photography or youtube (I work in IT), so I don't really care about any crappy comments I might get because I just delete them and block the kids that come on and make silly hateful comments because they prefer another brand of camera and they felt the need to come to my video and be rude. Anyway, I get many more good compliments (on my photos) than I do bad comments on my low quality videos ;-) Z6 vs Z7...I would have bought the Z6 if it was available before the Z7. I don't 'need' the extra resolution, but the cropping is nice and also using the DX crop mode for more 'reach' with proper framing is nice too...but other than that, I would rather have something like 30 MP.

When a pro-oriented memory system was developed to meet the needs of pros for years come it was only needed because SD an industry standard is a horrible system, a dumb bus, and fragile cards and exposed contacts and no mapping out of bad memory cells or error detection, the only answer manufacturers had was adding a card slot because, well SD fail, they fail for many reasons but something it is just a transfer problem where to transmission did not detect a dead address or it was just a dirty contact that dropped a few bits. Two slots however only helps when both are reading from different drivers instead of parallel using only a chip-select flag to choose which was the active stream. If one slot fails, usually that means a transfer to the other one fails for the same reason. That bus tech was borrowed from the 1980s 5.25 in floppy drive which was never intended for critical applications. Years later the PCI intelligent bus was developed and used for all sorts of high-reliability data transfers between GPU, or hard drives etc and reliability increased dramatically, that bus kept being updated and the PCIe+ version became a standard for high-reliability network SSD drives. Sandisk, Nikon and Sony got together and created a modern high-reliability card and bus system by adopting PCIe+ as the bus and intelligence and a new high-reliability multi-thread error trapping card that can map out failed cells, detect errors and error correction. This was the XQD and turned over the spec to the Compact Flash consortium to administer. The result has been a card system orders of magnitude higher reliability than 2 SD or even 3 SD cards mirrored. And being much and able to address far more capacity. The new standard is 1, 4 or 8 pipe CFExpress that starts at 1.9gb/s read right over 8 streams, with error correction. The first are 500gb and 1 Terabyte capacity with independent directories so on a single card, a mirrored image can be written or video on one directory or stills raw in another and jpg or multichannel audio instill others. The KZbin gurus who were all up in arms about how bad and unprofessional 1 slot was, showed they were either paid shills promoting limited cameras that only had SD, or they were clueless about the tech and just lied. With later firmware development the Z6 card system is capable of such high bit rates that recording internally 12 bit ProRes Raw video is possible. By next year all cameras that hope to compete will have to have that bus and card socket. Even Sony admits the XQD is vastly superior but, due to cost only put it in their high-end pro video cameras starting at $25,000 ...how many slots? 1. And no video ENG shooters or networks even mention it. They expect the best and are willing to pay for it.

I never cared about eye-AF feeling it was a crutch for beginners who wanted the camera to make their decisions for them in regard to the focal plane. But it is very effective with a portrait session or lifestyle shot. None of them are going to figure out your intended subject but the Nikon version is probably the best version I have seen. The Eye-AF is the only feature that people talk about on the a7xxx being so good and it might be its best feature since it has so many glaring weaknesses, but in use if there are multiple eyes to choose from, it fails completely since it does not give the option to select. I really like the Nikon update, for low light focusing it now beats the great D850, and tracking is so good it can replace the D850 for wildlife and sports. One of the best additions is the Closest Subject Priority that fixes a weakness the same way the D850 did. If a subject is lost from focus or a dominating background was present the Z cameras would jump to the background and not easily reacquirer the subject. Now it prioritizes the nearest subject. Now it is reliable enough to be on the same page as my intent, that whole sessions or events with moving subjects can be shot in AF-C either wide-area or auto-area and have zero missed focus. For anything still, Single point is spectacularly accurate....never fails to amaze me how accurate it is compared to any DSLR made. The D850 is the best DSLR made and it is not as accurate as the Z cameras. But if the subject is still and using very wide apertures for fine art, manual focus is so cool with the excellent Focus peaking function where you can see the focus plane moved across the subject. Other brands have that also but none I have seen comes close to the accuracy of the highlighting. Sony users do not end up using it at all because it is not accurate. I have not tried it on a Canon EOS R yet. I am not a burst shooter so a 12-15 hour wedding(here weddings are short for the ceremony, 30 minutes max and the rest of the time is free form, moving around the city leaving flowers at different monuments or view vantage points without a specific plan and often ends up in parks or another outdoor area before the party trying to stay one step ahead to be in the right position to shoot requires luck and quick thinking) I return to the studio with less than 1000 frames. The Z6 has increased my keeper rate over DSLR. I bought a Z7 first, the Z6 was not out yet. I liked it but my reason to get a mirrorless was for travel and a fun walking-around camera and the serious work was with my D850 and D800. I did not need the giant file sizes for that. 10 Days after getting the Z7 the store got the first Z6 in the city so I arranged to swap it for the Z6 and they gave me the difference in price in lenses, the 50mm 1.8, and 35 1.8 to go with my 24-70 f/4....all very sharp lenses. That was last winter and I had so much fun with the Z6 it was with me all the time and started to use it as the primary camera on portrait sessions and some product sessions if the client did not specify large files sizes. By May the use ratio of Z6 to my DSLRs was about 9:1 or greater. Sometimes I did need high res if the art director insisted. I decided to sell the D850 before it lost its value and get a Z7 to add to the kit and keep the D800 because it was worth more to me than the low price I could get for it on the used market. I loved the D850, all my cameras had battery drips and really was comfortable with the weight and size....until I got used to the Z6 as being a serious camera. Two things that standout, higher keeper rate, and higher availability rate. With the framing so easy to nail in the great EVF, no cropping is needed to get to the final image, and with less post time. Having it with me in a sling bag every day, chance opportunity shots are coming every day whereas the larger DSLRs sit on the shelf waiting for a session. The EVF is reason enough to justify the switch, composing and seeing the settings results before taking the shot means that most shots are nailed in exposure, color, and framing. Seeing settings in the image presented in the EVF is really an advantage, plus in low light, having the option to turn that off and see a light amplified scene makes AF or MF a breeze in very dark scenes. Another advantage of the Z6 is the excellent performance in low light. Up to ISO 102k, it is cleaner, better contrast and detail with better color fidelity than a D5. In FF I do not see a better camera, when build quality, egonomics, focus accuracy, low light performance, card reliability(yes, a single XQD is more reliable than 2 mirrored SD cards) The only downside to the Z cameras is their being so small, they generate less business. When I was low on paid sessions I would take the D800 or 850 out for some pleasure photography to parks or gardens, or architecture since I am in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. And a gripped D8x0 camera with large telephoto drew a lot of attention and invariably girls or couples would approach me and ask for photos which I did for fun but most of my paid studio or lifestyle sessions came from people who approached me. With the Z cameras being so small and "unprofessional" looking they don't do that anymore. Now my work is all by referral because those random approaches do not happen. An art director on a product shoot even asked where my real camera was.

I really appreciate your review, I just sold my D850 and was planning on getting the Z7 but I may go for the Z6, I'm not a professional but an enthusiast with past pro gigs. Now that I think back of my past cameras, 850' 810, 800, 600 and 7000, my favorites was between the D7000 and D600 (no sensor spots on my version) with lower pixel count, I think I may rent one and test it out!

Do you feel the AF is good enough and I don’t care about the eye AF either. I mean in low light single point just catching right like Nikon DSLR do? To be honest I think the Z7 still has the best file of all the mirrorless cameras out today prob because no low pass filter.

Do you have Instagram? I started with D750 and i recently upgraded to a7iii. I love them both. It’s a different way of shooting if you compared them. I notice that I seemed to like more the pictures of the D750. Simply because I slowed down when I take pictures with that camera. It has nothing to do with color or noise. When I use my a7iii for some reason I seemed to rush and my composition turns to crap. Lol

Enjoyed your video as you answered some questions. I’m a canon shooter presently using the 5 d mk iv and wish to transition to the mirrorless R5’s or r6. The R5 is a 45MP sensor ( very similar to the z7) and the r6 is 20 MP. Basicallly the r6 has Canon ‘s flagship ( 1dx. Mk iii) sensor. Both have the same AF which is equivalent to the 1dx mk iii. My question to you, is 20 MP enough? I do a lot of portraits, landscapes, sports and occasional engagements. I also print but nothing bigger than 17x22. Yes I do crop but not excessively as you illustrated in your video. Will the downgrade from 30 MP ( canon 5D mk iv) to 20 MP be very noticeable ?

I had a D700, 16-35mm f4 VR, 24-70mm f2.8, 70-200mm f2.8 VRII & an 85mm f1.8. Sold the lot 3 months ago & bought the Z6 with FTZ, Z 14-30mm f4 S, Z 24-70mm f2.8 S, Z 85mm f1.8 S & F 70-300mm f4.5-5.6E VR. The handling on the D700 was great (an iconic Nikon!) but Nikon have cracked it with the Z6/7! The autofocus needs work by Nikon but I generally only photo static subjects so am not taking wildlife nor sports so the Z6 is still a fabulous camera for me - it’s low light/high ISO performance is stunning! Nikon did a brilliant job on their 1st FF mirrorless (unlike Canon) so let’s hope they can remain in business & catch up with Sony.

First, beautiful photos on your site. Great video. This was very helpful for me as I was looking to get into a mirrorless system and have been looking at the Sony's as well, feeling overwhelmed by the choice even just looking at Nikon and Sony. I'm a long time Nikon user, (going back to pro photo work after raising my kid). Just wondering: did you consider the Sonys ever? They apparently have the AF system down... which is the hitch for me. But after watching this video, I'm leaning toward the Z6, so much more economical right now. Bless you and your family!

Great info man. Love hearing from someone that uses my same camera in a professional setting. I just shot with the z6 all last weekend shooting desert trucks in the desert. My whole camera was caked in dust. Definitely time to clean the sensor. I picked up one of the visible dust sensor cleaning kits, but still afraid to do it haha. Really looking forward to that video. Also, completely agree with your autofocus settings discussed in a previous video and would also love a green box confirmation in AF-C. Patiently waiting for another firmware update as well as the new 70-200 Z. Also thinking about picking up the new 85

Just because you use a certain brand doesn't mean you should give the brand a free pass if there is something wrong with the camera or gear in your opinion. Now for a question I have heard many D700 users praise it for the colors. Even though I don't do weddings/portraits do you think the D700 would do a good job in color reproduction on a sunset/sunrise scene? Best wishes Duane
