"May I address the foreman of the jury, why do you hold back your fury? Don't hold back your fury" I don't know what this is saying to me but it's speaking real loud
@cornacopia10313 жыл бұрын
Not to make it political but I read it in the sense of the George Floyd trial deliberations going on right now. Definitely a deeper meaning to it, and I don’t think JD wrote that line specifically thinking that, but that line resonated for me too.
@Technodreamer3 жыл бұрын
@@cornacopia1031 Fuck, that's a good line to draw.
@nitfens68633 жыл бұрын
@@cornacopia1031 obviously interpretation of music is up to the individual listener and you can let the song touch you wherever seems right, but I would just like to point something out. The story in the song is the book of Jonah (a fairly quick and light read if you're not looking to dive to deep in to it), "please don't hold back your fury" is Jonah demanding of God that he still destroy Ninveh despite them having repented and mended their ways, because he doesn't see repentance in the face of threat as genuine, and that once they see that the threat of destruction was removed they would stop believing Jonah's prophecy and return to injustice. God responds to Jonah basically that he is being heartless and self important, and that he shouldn't be the judge of whose sentiment is genuine or not, there's a very nice metaphor with a tree and a worm. Basically the demand for fury and retribution is actually in this case an unjust one, stemming from the accusers feelings about themselves, and not the accused. I'm sure the song is about more than just Jonah, and sorry if I ruined anything for you in any way, just thought this was worth sharing.
@cornacopia10313 жыл бұрын
@@nitfens6863 No, not ruined at all, and thanks for the backstory. It makes me wonder who JD is praying for retribution towards in the song, if that’s what’s happening. But because it’s good songwriting I think it’s deliberately ambiguous.

I’ve lived in Alabama all my life, and I go to college at South. Even with Mobile being one of the more fun places in Alabama, I always get jokes from my out of state/country friends about how uncool it must be to live here. But with the knowledge that Phineas and Ferb‘s creator graduated from South, and that we have a mountain goat song about us, at least we have a couple cool things now.

Jonah went down to the docks to flee from the wrath of the Lord But the mark on his forehead was visible to everybody on board They threw him down into the water but he did not drown I'm on a balcony in Mobile, Alabama, waiting for the wind to throw me down. Now the Lord told the great fish, be free of your burden and Jonah emerged from his darkness like a dancer crashing through the curtain and the plant grew but it withered and it shrivelled up and turned brown. I'm on a balcony in Mobile, Alabama, waiting for the wind to throw me down. Lord, if you won't keep me safe and warm Then send down the storm Send down the storm Jonah was sure he heard voices, maybe just one voice but real clear And where he went, the voice followed, sometimes hardly loud enough to hear "Shall I not spare the wise with the wicked? Hold back my wrath from this town?" I'm on a balcony in Mobile, Alabama, waiting for the wind to throw me down May I address the foreman of the jury? Why do you hold back your fury? Don't hold back your fury .

“I’m waiting for the wind to throw me down” and “Don’t hold back your fury“ were powerful lines for me. I’m partway through writing a book with a main character who is beyond the stage of denying that what he’s done was wrong, but he’s stuck in the resolution stage, because he doesn’t want to admit to anyone that what he did was wrong. He’s just waiting for the other shoe to drop, waiting for the people in his life to hate him, and waiting for the wrath of whatever deity is out there to hit him- but it doesn’t happen.
