Miss Congeniality 2 movie commentary reaction
It took us a little too long to do a movie commentary and reaction for Miss Congeniality 2. We enjoyed the first one a lot and had high hopes for the sequel. There's a lot of fun moments and the performances are great, but we definitely had a few things to criticise about it. That said, we greatly enjoyed making this movie commentary and reaction video!

The choreography they are doing is Tina Turner’s choreography from her performances of Proud Mary, so it’s believable that they’d be in sync. The “not that I love you or anything” was a call back to her break up and thinking the guy cared for her because he saved her.

This and Legally Blonde 2 are two of my favorite sequels and I get why some people might not like it and I also agree that the writing is definitely questionable at times (this is me putting it nicely) with how they characterized Regina’s character as well as the gay character since they really just went into racist and homophobic stereotypes. But I love the plot of this movie a lot and thought that it was really awesome how they actually veered away from another love story and was more focused on Gracie finding herself again and where she fits after the events of the first movie. Which is probably why I also like Legally Blonde 2 a lot because while there is a wedding, it wasn’t the main focus and was instead about Elle also finding her own space in this new place and fighting for what she believed was right. So yeah, while it may be rough in some parts, it’s still one of my favorites.

The first one is better but I did like the friendship plot line rather than the romantic plot line once the jerk from the first movie ducked out of the relationship because of publicity. Sad we didn't see Michael Caine again. I guess friendship was a theme in the first movie as well, when she stopped judging the other contestants and just started hanging out with them. I guess there's another point about how messed up and frankly stupid it is to treat women like they're stupid or to dismiss them because they behave or don't behave in a certain way - starting in the last movie with how Gracie mocked the other beauty contestants along with the guys and then she gets treated in a similarly dismissive way by other women as well as the other men.

The way they handled Joel’s character was a miss but I attribute it to the times. As for Fuller, they wrote her as the stereotypical angry black woman. They should have also addressed the intersectionality & complexities of not only being a woman in a male dominated space but the racial components that women of color face to begin with. I never had a problem with the way Fuller behaved bc I understand & live with those complexities. I doubt her character was written by a black woman, so of course all we can see is the aggression that seems to come from nowhere in particular. & I can see why y’all had this reaction to it. I blame the writers for touching on the surface of issues without making a statement of substance about them. Anyway with all it’s faults, this film is still a guilty pleasure of mine & I’m always happy to watch you guys.
@Drewski217

SO glad you did this!!! I definitely agree that the writing was of the time and oof problematic, especially with making the black character super aggressive for no real reason all the time and how it only really works because Regina King is Regina King (and the gay character as well, ack!! He was too broad and needed more specificity). I do really love, however, the concept of this movie because I definitely feel narratively it's the only thing that made sense as a continuation as well as using Sandra & Regina's characters to compare and contrast the other female agent and that the message was Gracie losing herself and coming back to the person she is as a middle ground.

I dont think reginas characterit suposed to be agressive just cuz is black, i never considered that way, i always think about it like it was her past background (not related to skin color but maybe i was wrong the entire time?)... I enjoyed your guys commentary for this one! You guys picked up on the typical tropes of the 2000s not just regarding the sassy gay side character but the angry black woman trope. “Why does Regina’s character hate the world? Why does she immediately have disagreements with authority, rules, and working with a partner/team? Why does she always resort to fighting” The reason is the writers maybe knowingly or unknowingly wrote their prejudices on how they perceive black woman as angry people. This trope is thankfully dying down and more Black Woman actors are refusing roles where they have some vaguely misunderstood background or troubled childhood which stunts their maturity and makes them resort to violence.

I still kinda find it weird when people don't know how to swim. I live in a country that is landlocked and the next coast is 700 kilometers away but i still go taught how to swim as a basic thing, we actually had swimming lessions in school because even if there is no sea, there are still instances where you could drown, like in a river or a lake or even a swimming pool. Plus it's juts a major bonus point when you go smehwere and you can actually play in the water and don't have to stay aside and watch others have fun.

In the USA, not all schools have a pool unless your town was a high income town. and swimming lessons cost money. People with less money don't have access to those privileges, unfortunately. Black people in the US were banned from public swimming pools in the US. And when segregation became illegal, a lot of municipal just closed public swimming pools all together because they didn’t want Black people using public pools. So the only pool you could go to was private pools - which costs money. So a lot of Black people never learned how to swim and it’s a stereotype to this day that Black people in the US don’t know how to swim

@@briannacorrigan1256 You don't have to take swimming lessons to learn how to swim i just gave the example that i have where i live but i didn't actually learn to swim in school as we only had swimming lessions in 8th grade and i had already learnt swimming beforehand as a kid. My dad taught me, so i could hang out at the lake with my friends on the water and he wouldn't have to worry. If i ever have kids i'll definitly teach them swimming from an early age so i won't have to worry about them when they are anywhere on or near the water. The driver was the insurance salesman in "Groundhog Day", Dr Kendrick in "The Time Traveler's Wife" (you really gotta do a reaction to this movie!), and Bob Bishop on "Heroes". Stephen Tobolowsky. You should see his acting credits on IMDB; it goes on like FOREVER! Maybe it's a controversial opinion, but... Regina King took over Jada Pinkett's earliest schtick (see tv series "A Different World"). Diedrich Bader is no stranger to working in drag; in "The Beverly Hillbillies" he played male Jethro Bodine and his twin sister Jethrine Bodine. And I can't argue with your assessment of Bader's fop (even though I like him in his other roles), but would love to compare it to Michael Cain's in the original of this sequel. I gotta say, I really love how you two work so tightly together. You're like Betty (Amy Poehler) and Jodie (Maya Rudolph) on Bronx Beat (please, PLEASE, do a search on KZbin); you respond like you are a hive mind. It's crisp and tight and satisfying. 35:43 My friends and I knew this guy who got fired for not showing up to work and wrote a whole "resume" (emphasis on the quotes) trying to make it sound like the company was at fault, but the excuses or reasons he gave just made him look worse. One was that he complained about having to take the bus on an hour long commute "TO AND FROM" work :( (I'm paraphrasing, but he actually wrote "to and from" in all capital letters to really sell how much he sacrificed for the company 😥). He was "sick" during a meeting so they rescheduled for him. However, he didn't show up.... because going to work on 8 am on a Sunday was "ridiculous." BRUH. BRO. WHAT. And if you think the resume was bad enough.... there was a time he was filling out a job application questionnaire. Two of the questions were "have you taken drugs/narcotics in the past?" and "would you steal money from the company." He answered "yes, meth" and "YES IF I WASN'T BEING PAID ENOUGH." We don't know how long he's been diagnosed with brain rot but it may be permanent 😞. On a different application for a fast food place, one of the questions was to list any strengths. Buddy took over the entire margin on one side of the page listing these "strengths".... and a couple of them were skateboarding and playing guitar. And he rated his hygiene very low 🤢. He's one of those people who'll do one of the dumbest things you've seen and the following week he'll somehow top the dumbassery. Also this guy who also barely applies for anything: i just don't understand why i can't get any jobs. It's like the universe is against me or something.

Haha the "one sport to rule them all" edit took me out 🤣 as someone who played hockey very seriously but not for school I so badly wanted to play a second sport just to do play sports for school! But nope just hockey and loved every minute of it even with a small tinge of regret.

Honestly you summed up my feelings about this movie perfectly. It's a lot of fun and the case aspect of the plot was interesting and it's a nice way to get Stan and Cheryl back, but the all the gay stereotypes are tiring. Also, the dance that Gracie and Fuller do at the drag club isn't really improvised that's some of the actual choreography that Tina Turner and her back up dancers do for that song.

I always find movies like this so odd, because they always feel like the first script was SUPER queer friendly (I think Sandra and Reginas character were kinda gay ngl just my opinion) but that kinda of representation is always censored or written out and we end up with the "our two straight main characters stumble their way through the world of drag, but hardly learn anything, barely change, or take it as a joke" trope. Drag feels like an evolution of yourself, but in movies its just slapstick and worn out jokes because "haha. queer."

Matthews was a shallow dude with misogynistic views in the dating department, he picked up a new hottie every couple of days and Grace was just another name on the list, regardless of his appreciation of her as a colleague. He had ZERO growth between the beginning of the first film and the end.

I'm brazillian and live in Brazil which is mainly a litoral country with a lot of beaches, and grew up going to the beach (wich is 20min away by car) and waterfalls and pools. I cannot swim to save my life. Like, I can kinda swim but not like full on dive in. I should really learn considering we have a lot of floods in my country, specially in my state
