Maleficent is a movie we actually totally forgot about but it was suggested we do a movie commentary for it and are really glad we decided to make a video.
It's a well told reimagining of the original from the perspective of the "villain" Maleficent. With a more deeply fleshed out story we're happy we got to do this movie commentary & reaction for this well made new take on an old story!

If you do the 1959 original cartoon (which I hope you do after seeing this), here are some facts: 1. The original film was based on the ballet by Chickovisky, which was also based on a fairytale written by The Brothers Grimm. The original fairytale was two paragraphs long, so Disney had to expand on it by adding to the story and using the Chickovisky score. In that version, Mary Costa, an opera singer from Tennessee, did the singing and speaking voice for Aurora and Eleanor Audley (who voiced the stepmother in Cinderella), did the voice of Maleficient. In Maleficient, the producer used one element from the original story, and that was the eighth fairy (there were seven in the original tale. Disney reduced it to three and gave the eighth fairy a name) was actually a good fairy before she became evil. They took that element and built a story around it. Bill Shirley, a famous pop singer, did the singing and speaking voice of Prince Phillip ( though I find it interesting that he is a pop singer because he sounds more like an opera singer in the film). Verna Felton, who played the fairy godmother in Cinderella, did the voice of Flora, the self-appointed leader of the three fairies. One thing about Mary Costa I forgot to mention: she had to drop her southern Tennessee accent for the role, but on the line "it wasn't that", she briefly goes back into it, so if you're wondering why that line sounds different than her other lines, that's why. I'm surprised Walt allowed her southern accent to stay in on that line since she was supposed to have an English accent. 2. The original 1959 film was the first Disney animated film shot in widescreen. Walt made that decision because he felt it would look better that way. 3. The original film, like all the other Disney hand-drawn films before and since, used live-action references for the human characters. It's when models are hired to play the characters and recreate the scenes while animators are nearby drawing them. This was done so the animators can draw movement better and make it more authentic. Helene Stanley was the model for Aurora (as well as Cinderella) and Eleanor Audley herself was the model for Maleficent (she also was the model for the wicked stepmother in Cinderella, making her one of the only voice actors to do both). 4. This was the last Disney Princess film until The Little Mermaid in 1989. The reason is because of the film's release. Walt spent 6 million dollars on Sleeping Beauty, making it the most expensive animated film that year. When it came out, it opened at 5.3 million dollars, less than what they were hoping for. In total, it made 51.6 million dollars, making it one of the top highest-grossing films that year. However, due to the high cost of advertising, promotion, and distribution (which is where the money went), Disney never recovered the costs from the film. As a result of this, and the low opening box office numbers, Disney decided it was too expensive and people were no longer interested in fairy tales. He stopped doing Disney princess films and focused on projects that were cheaper to make and hoped would satisfy the public's interest. 5. This is the last film for the ink and paint department. Starting with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the men did the drawing and the women did the painting. The men would draw the picture, the picture would be put on cells, and the women would paint the cells for color. After Sleeping Beauty, Walt got a machine that would make painting cells quick and cheap. As a result, the ink and paint department was shut down indefinitely. The film after Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmations, was the first Disney animated film that used this new technology. Sorry for the long history, but I researched so much on the original film that I wanted to let you know in case you decide to react to it. Hope this was helpful.

Everything else is accurate. If I’m mistaken, I assume “Lady and the Tramp” was the first to use Technirama.

Since Walt and the animators didn't exactly say which version they used, I assumed it was from the brother's Grimm. Thank you for clarifying and thanks for the correct spelling of the composer's name ( it was hard to spell because it sounds different from the spelling).

it's such a great metaphor for SA, and I liked that the film deconstructs the notion that women need to be broken down in order to be strong (a lot of "strong female characters" had horrible things done to them in their backstories which largely contributes to why they're badasses). maleficent's trauma didn't make her stronger, it caused her to hurt others, she lost the kind part of herself and was unable to process and grow past her trauma and she only gets better through her love for aurora. it's by hurting a person she loves so dearly that causes maleficent to reexamine what her trauma has done to her and she finally starts being able to move on from it and I think it's so refreshing to see a movie that says that "no, your trauma didn't make you stronger, but it also doesn't have to define who you are"

I mean to be fair, the concept wasn't new when this film came out. In the UK one of my favourite books when I was pretty young in the late 80s was one that was a retelling of fairly tales told from another perspective where things weren't what we had been told (called "There's a wolf in my Pudding"). And there was a cartoon that had done something along those lines in the 80s as well.

I would say that "Wicked", although it's a play, did that much before this movie ever did. It's one of the most succesful and longest running plays, based on one of the most popular movies/stories of all time (The Wizard of Oz) and twists the story around to reveal that one of the most iconic villains of all time (The wicked witch of the west) was not so wicked or evil after all.

a detail I really like about this film is that when maleficent is using her magic out of anger and hate, the magic is this creepy green colour that is consistent with the animated film and helps with her being perceived as evil by others. but when she's using her magic when she's happy and compassionate, it's this wonderful golden colour that you'd associate more with a "good fairy/witch". it's great visual storytelling and I just love it so much

Plus I love that when she's messing with the three "pixies," her magic is that golden color. Nice to see she can be a bit less than respectful of the ones my favorite reviewer calls "dingbats" without going green with her magic. So, she can still have a bit of fun playing pranks even if she's not doing it "for the evulz."

Honestly, I'm kind of sad that we don't see anything about the Queen, even though she was also most likely a victim of Stefan. She was married off to him by her father, lost her child because of him and then died completely alone without ever being able to see her daughter a single time. It could even be sad that grief was one of the reasons she died (it's a Disney movie after all), seeing as she was pretty young and judging from the rest of the cast, dying that young wasn't as common as it was in reality. I totally agree! Sleeping Beauty is actually one of the few popular fairy tales in which the birth mother is alive, and what's more is that she's a good, kind-hearted person (not a wicked stepmother). I almost consider Sleeping Beauty to largely be the Queen mother's story, or at least my favorite versions of the tale feature the Queen prominently. Her not being given a fair rendering in Maleficent is just one of many issues I have with the movie.

After Maleficent curses Aurora and leaves they show Aurora's mother flee the room unlike in Sleeping Beauty where she immediately goes to her child who was just attacked. Also in the Maleficent movie, Aurora's mother knew baby Aurora for months and conveniently both her and Stefan didn't have "true love" for their own daughter. All the characters in the movie, except Diaval/Diablo, were made worse (evil and/or weak and/or stupid, etc) just to try to make Maleficent look better.

Great points! I also thought it was sort of poetic how the tool used to enact the curse on Aurora was an iron spindle since fairies are allergic to iron. It was like Maleficent's way of turning the human's/King Stefan's advantage over the fair folk against them/him.

In the version of 'Sleeping Beauty' I grew up with (which is a German Movie from 1971), there were 13 fairies, but only 12 were invited to the christening of the princess, because they only had 12 gold plates. So the king decided not to invite the fairy of hard work, as their daughter was a princess and wouldn't need to work hard ever. I always liked this little detail and would have liked to see it in the original Disney movie...

In the Charles Perrault version (French), there were eight fairies. Like in Grimm’s, the King and Queen were short on golden plates. But the differences are the reason they didn’t invite the eighth fairy was because people assumed she died or just disappeared since she hadn’t left her tower for 50 years. When the eighth fairy arrived at the christening, the royal couple offered her a silver plate to make up the mistake for not inviting her. Still mad, though. This made the youngest fairy sense that the eighth fairy would cause a scene or do something awful as in bestowing a curse and she hid herself behind heavy velvet curtains, until the eighth fairy says her gift to the Sleeping Beauty. Smart move, youngest fairy 😅

I do love how you can tell the King goes mad, not really for a empathetic or moral guilt for what he did, or for being kept away from his daughter, but it’s a more shameful guilt of having his bad actions actually come back to him and have consequences. He did that thing to Maleficent under the belief that it would never be known and he’d just get away with it and be able to forget about it with the help of luxuries and the glory he gained as King.

Them catching feelings w/ each other after they first met is acceptable, because of that one line from Maleficent's spell 'beloved by all who meet her' Phillip have no control he was somewhat affected by an external force.and Aurora falling inlove to the first guy she meet(love at first sight).

Something I didn't realize when I watched the film the first time is how Shakespearian King Stefan's descent into madness (and ultimate demise) is. Just like Lady Macbeth in The Tragedy of Macbeth, Stefan's guilt over his betrayal of Maleficent, as well as his being convinced that she'll strike first, drives him to the point of obsession and insanity. Not to mention Sharlto Copley played that festering torment phenomenally well. It's what makes him such a despicable (but awesome) villain in my opinion.

Come to think of it, Stephen pretended to have defeated Maleficent, and that's how he became king. When Maleficent comes back, wingless but still very full of magic, and terrifies everyone, I wonder how Stephen keeps his throne. There should have been torches and forks and a revolution against the impostor. Also, that sort of jerk would have probably just said "eh, my first born is cursed, but I can still get my queen pregnant again, and get a son this time, so whatever."

@@dinkerz No no, I get that monarchy means stability, and that societies need that and people like that, and they're never in a hurry to kick a monarch out. However, when it comes to monarchy, especially in such a magic environment (in real history that would be "supersticious" instead of "magic"), folks are legitimists and one is supposed to be born into the royal line to be considered "chosen" to inherit the throne, and Stefan is an orphaned peasant nobody. He conquers his power, not by war but by an exploit, getting rid of a perceived enemy. And from there, for starters he goes almost immediately into paranoia and we can assume he' not that great of a ruler, therefore the kingdom enjoys little stability or prosperity. Second, it is eventually revealed that his exploit was a fraud. He has, then, no legitimacy to be on the throne. I believe it could trigger a popular revolt. Or, at least, another ambitious guy would be justified to try to fight him and take his crown.

Quick note: the baby in the window scene was a shot/reverse shot not done with Angelina because the baby kept crying, so they made it smile with a toy. The little girl in the cliff scene that toddles up and wants Maleficent to pick her up is her daughter, Vivi.

Everyone always seems to miss this but Maleficent's curse was for Aurora to prick her finger BEFORE the sun set on her 16th birthday and die, not ON her 16th birthday, meaning Aurora could have pricked herself at any time leading up to that birthday. She could have been 5 years old and fallen under the curse if she pricked her finger. That's why the fairies took her into hiding for 16 years, so they could keep an eye on her leading up to the expiration of the curse. The 16th birthday was just the cut-off, not the only set day for the curse to be fulfilled.

Snow White And The Huntsman is another great reimagining from this era of fairytale remakes. Very underrated and overlooked because of the Twilight prejudices against Kristen Stewart. Bonus: Maleficent’s pointy cheekbones look was directly inspired by Lady Gaga’s alien look in her Born This Way video and era.

Man when this movie came out I raved about it to everyone who would listen. I love fairytales redone well plus it was one of the first sort of villain backstory/redemption arc type movies, that I had seen anyway. I just love this one, the message is so beautiful. Ive watched it with all my kids as soon as I felt they could handle the scarier bits.

Just to provide some context on the movie terminology pixie vs fairy. The way the movie uses "fairy" is more like the Celtic mythological umbrella term of faerie, the Fae, the Fair Folk, the Sídhe, etc. So all of the creatures in the Moors are Faerie or Fae creatures but they're different kinds. So the three godmothers are faeries but are specifically pixies and the little dude who took his mushroom headpiece off to bow is most likely a Redcap. Maleficent is a bit undefined but she seems to be a type of dark fae from the Disney reimagining of the Unseelie Court (Scottish lore) which is basically a more malevolent realm of Faerie. (As opposed to the Seelie Court which is the more benevolent but still dangerous realm.) Thus why her name is Maleficent, which has a darker meaning, to match her classification as a fairy. Side note, I love the way this movie plays around with lore both within the Disney Sleeping Beauty mythology and with Celtic Fae mythology. It's my second favorite part of this franchise behind Angelina Jolie's incredibly engaging performance, of course.

I was just about to make a comment about this to explain the umbrella term and differences between as when she says some do have wings and some don't. Same for the fact that her horns and feather-like wings are just among many variations a Fae can have. I also loved the movie for the fact that they kept in the knowledge that iron burns Fae.

Stephen violating Maleficent was definitely worse than killing her because at least in dying, she wouldn't have to live with the knowledge that someone she trusted had betrayed her. as always, you guys have the best takes and taste in films. Maleficent has always been one of my favorite Disney villains and I love how this movie expanded on her character. Angelina absolutely killed it in this role! ❤️

That beating Aurora' s head took when she collapsed just *screams* concussion, and when someone is recently concussed, the first rule is *don't let them fall asleep!* If a person is concussed, and they fall asleep, there's a strong possibility that they will slip into a coma and die.

The whole thing with why she didn't turn him into a dragon to get to the castle in my opinion is that the guards would see a giant dragon aproching the castle and then they would get caught.

I like to imagine this movie is like, a woman keeping the baby after being violated. She had to care for the baby of the man who hurt her. At first she hated the baby, saw it as part of him and wanted to punish it. But she felt compelled to care for it, seeing that the child she cursed for being born was innocent. She learned to love the baby, see that the baby loved her despite all of her trauma. Maleficent allowed the baby to change her, to make her feel vulnerable, and to let go of her hate to give the girl the life she should have. This is just my reading on it tho

Angelina works as an ambassador for the UN and on one of her trips to visit refugees one of the children was really scared of her and no one had any idea why. He called her a witch and tried to hide from her and then she realised he’d seen her as Maleficant so he got very scared

I remember back when this movie was released I liked it but didn’t care much afterwards. Now with hindsight of all the Disney movie remakes, I wonder how they started so good and lost sight with this trend shortly after. It is a shame as there was a lot of potential with this idea of remakes giving them a different perspective or focusing on different characters to expand the story and worldbuildong.

The curse is based off of just seeing the spindle wheel in the corner of the from and literally the fact that Stephan drugged her. “Sleep like death”. Also at 16 because of what he told her when she was 16 and they kissed.basically aurora was cursed with the exact reality her father did to maleficent except she wouldn’t wake up and realize what hapened

Honestly I'm pretty sure that the reason why many classic Disney heroes all have dead parents is to a. give them childhood trauma that will make them more interesting characters (because otherwise their characters are pretty flat) and/or b. to explain why their parents aren't actively involved in their lives and talking them out of doing the stupid shit they tend to get up to without having to go down the whole abandonment/neglect route

Your comments about how long birds live made me curious, so I looked it up. Ravens tend to live for 10-20 years in the wild, but the record for a captive raven is 69 years, and there are rumours of ravens living up to 80! Presuming Diaval IS a raven. Crows don't live nearly as long!

It wasn't strictly an accident, but to be fair, Aurora, even though you're hearing about it now, when it's almost upon you, the betrayal came *way* before the befriending. She was actually trying to revoke the curse herself, but got tied up with the red tape of her own "exact wording" issues. She really could have used a good lawyer to look over the curse prior to casting it, to catch any problematic wording and/or loopholes.

I like that movie very much. Stefan is one of the scarier villains cause he is a human. When he took the wings of maleficent it made my skin crawl. I would love your take on the hunchback of Notre Dame as I think they have the scariest villain (Frollo). He is just pure evil.

I think the reason she chooses not to kill the king is because it would be mercy. Better than what she could do to him a live. I saw it as a retaliation for him stripping her of her wings, but not killing her. Making him have to live in terror and regret for what he did to her, like how she must of felt about people after he violated and mutilated her
