Cruella movie commentary reaction
Cruella is a fun alternate look at a classic character and well worth making a movie commentary and reaction for. Aesthetic and slightly over the top it could easily have been a disaster but it ends up being a great ride!

I'm not sure if this is mentioned or not, Cruella's pet dog in this movie is played by Bobby, the same dog from Descendants. In Descendants the dog was the pet of Cruella's son played by the late Cameron Boyce. It's a very nice tribute.

Also fun fact: the costume designer said that the 'Garbage Gown' Cruella wears to show up the Baroness is intended to be made of pieces from the Baroness's old collections stiched together. She's essentially telling her that 'you're trash and I'm taking you out.'. One hell of a power play!

I've said this ever since it came out. I don't get how people think that this is the same Cruella as in 101 Dalmatians. She even comes to somewhat like them in the end. Plus in this universe Pongo and Perdita are siblings so yeah. Also Anita is black. Not being racist but she was white in Dalmatians so it's definitely a reimagining not am origin story.

I'm so happy you guys enjoyed this one, Cruella was so much better than people give it for. Emma kills it, the costuming is absolutely beautiful, and idk man it's just a really fun movie and sometimes that's all I want. It's a reimagining in the purest sense of the word, and considering how many people complained that the Disney live actions were too similar to the originals you'd think people would like this one more. Like these characters are not supposed to be the same as their animated counterparts, and it's surprising how many people don't seem to understand that. I'm genuinely curious to see how they approach the sequel, and just realized that Disney casually making the Roger and Anita poc means we're going to get an interracial couple that doesn't feature a white person, and that's so cool as a black girl who doesn't see herself as the love interest very often. Also maybe it was just me but did anyone else ship Horace and Artie? They had really good chemistry, and the characters genuinely liked each other enough that I couldn't help to see it leading to something romantic

Looking forward to the possible shown romance between Anita and Roger~ And also: YES! I'm so glad there's more people liking Horace and Artie together. They don't have a lot of on-screen interactions, but what we got still showed a positive and fun dynamic between them and I think they could be very cute together.

@@bethyoshida6715 I think the general idea of "live action sympathetic trauma-filled backstory for intense villain character" is all something needs to check off that box for most people right now. I love almost everything about this movie. The cinematography and color palette from bright and whimsical like a ha ha, we’re still Disney and than just gradually making a darker one. Even with the dark tones, I love the different color splashes like the reds and blues to make a nice contrast to the darker tones which is mainly seen with the costumes. Next, the costumes. I know some feel that the punk style Cruella is inspired by is not suited for her character, but I think they miss one crucial point. She started out poor and an orphan after Katherine died. Being on the streets inspired her punk aesthetic and she grew up wanting more. While she yearned for something better, that child who lost her mother is still in there and her punk aesthetic merged with the better fabrics and designs. So it does make sense narratively. I know the controversy behind the “first gay character” is annoying, but I love Artie as a character. I like how being “gay” is not the biggest part of his character. I liked how he and Cruella had something in common and developed a friendship that lasts. He also is an essential part of the team which is awesome. The story telling and the character development is great. Horace and Jasper is not just the goofy henchman. They have minds of their own and personalities of their own. I like how Cruella is loyal to the people she cares about and gives them a place in Hell hall. She even takes care of the dogs. While the Baroness is a psychopath, Cruella is a sociopath, in my opinion. I do like how Cinema Therapy breaks her character down so watch their video. The costumes are chef’s kiss and each outfit is identifiable and iconic. And lastly, the soundtrack is amazing and fits each storyline well. Much thought has been put into this film.

Hello, a REALLY LATE reply but just now I've found this video. It's not possible that "Cruella" (2021) is a prequel to "101 Dalmatians" (whether it be 1961 or 1996 version) Both versions of "101 Dalmatians" happen in 1958, where "Cruella" is set in the 1970's However, I really like the theory that the "101 Dalmatians" Cruella is what she'd turn into if she was raised by the Baroness

Baroness is absolutely a narcissist. She is showing all signs of narcissism, and quite frankly, having grown up with a narcissist myself, I'd say the people who made the movie depicted narcissism perfectly. I wouldn't be surprised if they consulted with psychologists prior to this. This is why it's important people educate themselves about narcissism, 'cause most are not aware how cruel this people can be. It's not about just looking yourself in the mirror and thinking that you're great, it goes far beyond that - it's about manipulation, establishing power and control. Beware of narcissists. 🙅‍♂🙅‍♂
@yikesmydude5641
@yikesmydude5641 Жыл бұрын
I’m sorry but this is kind of offensive to me as a person with npd. I’ve been traumatized by people with narcissism as well, and the baroness does absolutely seem to possess those traits, but it’s the person that you should beware of, not the disorder. If anyone is curious why I say this, it’s a lot because of how npd is caused, which is primarily child abuse in the forms of overprotection which leads to under socialization and thus results in an inability to properly assess the motives of others, making people think everyone hates or is trying to be cruel to them and feeling they are better than those types of people. There’s also the type of abuse I personally suffered, neglect. Often children who aren’t loved enough in a certain aspect will develop npd as the brains way of trying to supply necessary support to a person who is not otherwise receiving it. Malignant narcissists are real and horrible and absolutely cause terrible harm, but please understand not all of us are like this. Please listen to us when we say there is a definite link between narcissism and harmful behavior, but also recognize that we are not incapable of change - or even that our disorder is inherently harmful to others. I am willing to answer any questions anyone has, as long as we are all being civil. I understand that narcissism is not a very nice thing to learn about, but it’s impossible for narcissism to ever be helped through if no one ever wants to try to help. Please understand I’m not trying to be aggressive or antagonistic, merely sharing my experiences and point of view.

this is really ableist in the sense that you're essentially demonizing people with NPD. there are many many good people who just happen to have NPD, her being an asshole has nothing to do with that. just say she's selfish and an asshole, there's no need to bring in a term that's directly related to a disorder especially when you can't control whether or not you have the disorder. however, you *can* control whether or not you're a selfish asshole, and you can be a selfish asshole even if you don't have NPD.

Really fine stuff. It's also special to me because I saw it in theatres when I finally got my lisence after a good number of tries. Was not expecting that day to go or end as well as it did. Plus, I know some people have issues with Estella's instant turnaround into Cruella, and I won't deny that it is kinda one of the more sketchier parts of the script, but I have the theory that the reason for her being so mean was because it's closer to her true nature. She hasn't tempered it yet, and her whole life her true nature has been repressed and moulded so that she fits in. So when she unleashes that part of herself, it comes out with a vengeance - something it's also fuelled by. There's a lot of The Baroness in her that she doesn't quite realise, giving you a sort of mirror image reflection for both characters. And when she almost loses Horace and Jasper & learns the truth about herself, that's when she becomes a bit more humbled. She realises on some level who she had turned into and what she could have lost. At that point, she knows who she is now. She embraces that part of her personality and marries it with the caring part of herself (her relationship with Horace and Jasper, her true family). Unlike The Barkness who can't love anyone but herself and holds emotional connection as weakness, Cruella knows better. She needs her family instead of pushing them around/away like she started off doing. She was no better than The Baroness at that stage. Even her mock-funeral could be interpreted as her burying the repressed part of herself to some degree. Or maybe I'm just reading way too deep into it because I love the film so much. From the characters, the music and the aesthetic, this film is a real masterpiece for me. And I'm so glad you guys liked it too!

If the events of Cruella are canon, 101 Dalmatians runs into a bit of a problem...Perdy and Pongo (the dalmatians' parents) are brother and sister.

Of the recent live action remakes and retellings of classic Disney animated films, Cruella was/is probably the best one of them all to have been released. In regards to the "making the puppy murderer sympathetic" thing, It's not something I was begging for or anything, but I was honestly hoping for something like the Joker where the character starts off sympathetic, but ends up becoming an irredeemable monster that no one would even dare root for. While I like a lot of aspects of this reimagining, I was kind of hoping the film would go this route. I think having her ending up an anti-hero doesn't really work all that we'll for me. I don't hate it, but I much prefer she became someone I root against by the very end of the film. I honestly hope the sequel takes a darker turn down this route by having her go from an anti-hero to a full on villain. But then again I understand with the way the story was told, it makes it harder to have that darker turn. I think I just wanted the character to be a bit more sinister and as it stands, her growth is compelling but IMO it would've been even more compelling had she be more sinister to the point where we start to find it uneasy and disturbing. Disney probably won't go that route, but with all the dark stuff they've done in their movies before, I wouldn't put it past them to go even further.

The psychology of this movie is fantastic in the way it reveals what the dalmatian spots mean to her. The blots in the book mean disapproval and compartmentalisation, then they also take on connotations of childhood trauma as they are used to kill her mother. Then she gains power over those feelings by stealing the dogs as an adult and uses them for her own ends, Culminating in a pattern that will bring her ultimate success in the medium that she has always used to express herself...fashion. Stunning.

Interesting thing: In the original book, the character Cruella was created when the author's friend at the time made a joke about how a dog's fur would make a great coat. It was kind of cool that they did that nod in the movie, imo.

I loved Cruella. Much better than any of the sympathetic backstory movies like Joker or Maleficent. The music and the fashion sold it for me. Apparently there's supposed to be a sequel. I can see why this movie won 2 Oscars.

Both of you mentioned wanting to watch Once Upon a Time. I know you only do movies but that might be cool to do a series breakdown maybe just go over the amount of episodes that last as long as your average movie every other week or so then have a movie in between or something like that. I think Once Upon a Time would be a great series to start with :) love your content budz keep it up

I was talking to a friend after seeing this movie. I liked the way they addressed Cruella's issues and made her a more likeable character. However, we were debating whether it would be more interesting to leave the question open about whether she made the coat with the dogs or not. To leave a hook for the sequel, and kind of force people to watch to know the answer. Regardless, I liked the end of the film where Cruella herself presents Anitta and Roger with the Dalmatians. Why she did it? This Cruella likes to do things the complicated way if it means it will be fun and not boring. It was genius of the movie to make Cruella like dogs. For us, the fact that the dogs played a role in her mother's death unconsciously planted in her a seed of hatred towards the Dalmatian race in particular. I'm fine with her trying to make the coat in the second movie, as long as she doesn't succeed in the end. That could be a good theme for the sequel, whether or not she looks like her biological mother. This could torment her, and be the character's dilemma. Bring the Baroness back. She was a great villain. There could be a scene between the two with Cruella visiting her in prison. Perhaps it could be the Baroness who came up with the idea of making the fur coat and she would be torn between doing it or not. It would be a good plot, how far she would be willing to go to immortalize herself in the fashion world. Jasper could be her moral compass and this would also help develop their relationship.

Dalmatians are very nervous dogs who are fairly apathetic towards others, but guard their owners. It's not surprising they went after a smaller dog and child they especially perceived as Not There With An Invite Of The Owner. Also, one of the guys does not look like he did as a child...
