Hayter are a disgrace for passing these on to loyal customers who trust in their name and reputation in the lawnmower industry as being premium manufacturers of great standing. If they don’t get the finger out then they are going to ruin decades of hard earned reputation and status. Great video Big Fella.👍

When I started fixing mowers, I fell in love with the side shaft engine Hayter models. The 496 series wasn't as good, but it is better than the new 479 series, which are easier to work on because they constantly need working on as it seems the new philosophy is that if its easy to fit the parts, they can wear out quicker and we gets parts sales from it. No consideration for the person who has to spend £200+ every few years (if worked hard as professional stuff is supposed to) to get it fixed, and the downtime while it's being repaired. Customers wish they had kept their 496 series mower and got it repaired instead of getting a new 479 model for £1600+.

Hi Mick. When you described this mower to me, you didn't do it justice on how bad it was. After watching this video, to wear out that metal chain cover means it has done some serious miles, and I suspect that the plastic axle bearings have worn so much that also caused the excess play in the rollers, on top of the end caps moving in as worn badly. I use motor bike chain lube on chains as it's good for miles on my bikes. Who ever worked on that previously, needed videos like ours to know how to repair it correctly. Plastic wears out faster, so it means parts sales 🤫 And thanks for the shout out 😁

Hayter actually recommend a marine grade grease for these rear rollers when your rebuild them.

I wonder why they haven't upgraded the roller to a thicker steel for the replacement parts? Seems like a good aftermarket upgrade would be a steel sleeve slid over the rollers as a sacrificial "tire" for the roller. If fact having said tire... maybe some wide rubber bands stretched atound the roller would be a good idea!
@bentullett60686 ай бұрын
At least its easier than trying to remove the plastic chute guard on the previous generation Hayter Harrier. Been repairing one and the one bolt by the height adjuster is impossible to get anything to. With this rear roller repair Hayter do state that you need to apply marine grade grease to the components when re-assembling as it slows the corrosion that cause a lot of those failures to occur.

Good to see you wearing those goggles when grinding, we only get one pair of " mince pies ", i have a hayter 48 pro that i bought new in 2003, has been totally abused over the years and apart front some adjutsment to the drive cable and maybe one oil change, has never let me down in 21 years, good old kit compared to the new crap we get these days

Good job again there Mick, although those parts have clearly been poorly designed by Hayter. I had a mini nightmare doing my Hayter's diaphram and carb service this afternoon. I used a cheap copy diaphram and it just would not sit right and kept leaking fuel despite all surfaces being clean and following the correct tightening sequence. Had to use two gaskets in the end to seat the carb. The old primer bulb put up a hell of a fight coming out too but after two dozen swear words I got it out and a new one in. Hopefully that should last two seasons now as I don't use it much. Cheers matey
@themowerman6 ай бұрын
Yeah a genuine gasket set it's better.. the carbs bend so maybe time for a new genuine carb mate
@Brian-ne6pk6 ай бұрын
Need to make sure you pack the pins with waterproof grease. The bushes are plastic to stop wear on the metal shaft and are cheap and quick to replace. That looks like a machine that’s been abused and not cared for 😂 the chain has never seen grease by the look of it 😂. It’s actually a good design and has been upgraded with chain tensioner and bearing end caps to seal the grease in since that model . As an operator you have to care for your machines 👍🏻
@themowerman6 ай бұрын
I don't have a problem with the mower it's the roller itself.. it's too soft and gets down to the welds and that's fault.. ask a question how many rollers needed replacement on the old gray pros.. having a plastic end cap is just poor.. hey... At least we now have a video on how to repair it outside of warranty..

Depends on the models. Currently finding quite a few of the 1990's Harrier 56 models are becoming a struggle to obtain parts for now like the cable assembly (has throttle, drive and engine brake cable on them). Engine parts on these mowers are also becoming difficult to obtain as Briggs and Stratton stopped production of this engine ages ago and don't supply important internal parts for the side shaft engines

They have bolt on roller sprockets now, and a update roller and shaft kit is available. Hey Mick. I too have this Hayter 48 pro with drive problems. Tried the V belt did not solve the problem . Mower has only been used domestically so no real wear. Was great when new 4 years back. Then one day it went okay for about 5 minutes and then almost completely lost the drive, I thought that this video was my solution but on stripping the rear roller everything seems to be just fine, No wear at all. If I let it cool for about half an hour the drive returns but again for just about 3 runs of the length of the lawn. Any ideas anyone? Plus I found that this mower does not have those two batman end plates covering the plastic bush. This is my second and last Hayter. Have given up on it and got me a Honda 536.
