I lived nearby for many years and passed by this house on Broadway almost daily. I knew nothing about it at the time, but could see that it was certainly of historic value, a very handsome building that was probably originally a family home. It was home to a advertising agency (I think) at the time. There is an employee parking lot behind the building.

We rented this home for our office, Colehour's Insurance Agency, for 4 years when after this family business my grandfather, Frank Colehour started in 1890's had to move from the old Brown Building due to Illinois National Bank needing more room for the bank. We moved our office and staff to this cobble Stone home and it was so charming and quaint. I loved the old home so much. I lived in my grandfather's home for 6 years at 302 Royal Avenue corner of Royal Ave and W. Jefferson Street, this home was formerly a surgeons home when My grandfather bought it about 1896. Even the attic had polished oak flooring. What beautiful workmanship went into these old homes. So sad some are in crime areas and not kept up ! On the next corner from Royal avenue, Miriam avenue is or was a beautiful brick home owned. Dr Eugene and Catherine Stafford, another beautiful home

Another great story. Thanks for sharing it. My Mother worked for Illinois National Bank & Trust Company, as a bank teller, in the 1970s. Thanks for watching and have yourself a very nice day.

My wife is related to the Herricks by way of her mom (maiden name was Herrick). The family has roots going back to colonial times in both Virginia and Salem, Ma (the Herricks actually had something to do with the Salem Witch Trials). The ancestors from England were entwined with royalty and the arts, as there was Sir William Herrick whom helped jewel the crown, press gold coins, etc and his nephew was famous poet Robert Herrick. Both of these fellows circa late 1500s to mid 1600s.

I like how this old home looks and it sticks out like an sore thumb by the way it does not match the neighborhood. My eyes are always drawn to it even when I ride the bus past it.

The crazy thing about this house was that it was in the middle of the Prarie on a wagon trail. No other structures were around it.
