Daylight DC1 First Look: Out Of The Darkness

We still need computers; we just need them to be calmer. So goes the pitch from a new company called Daylight, whose DC1 promises a “new kind of computer, designed for deep focus and wellbeing.”
To tech geeks, it might come off as a shameless cash grab; to Ashwagandha-eating earth biscuits, the perfect way to fight screen addiction. To me, it’s an opportunity to spend an intentional afternoon away from my other screens on Governor’s Island. No press junket; no sponsored travel - just a three-minute boat ride from my South Brooklyn apartment with two pre-production samples and one question on my mind: does this so-called “Kindle on crack” really change the way I compute?
[ABOUT MRMOBILE'S DAYLIGHT DC1 FIRST LOOK]
MrMobile's Daylight DC1 First-Look/Hands-On was produced following one week with two pre-production DC1 review samples provided by Daylight.
MrMobile does not offer manufacturers the opportunity to preview, edit or approve content before publication. Neither Daylight nor any other manufacturer provided compensation in exchange for this coverage.

This isn't e-ink!! It's a reflective LCD screen (meaning it has no backlight but instead uses the light around you to illuminate the screen), the same kind of screen that was on the gameboy advance 20+ years ago. It's important to distinguish because e-ink has many advantages (amazing battery life and paper-like eye feel probably being the bigger ones) that this device does not have. This device is a compromise between e-ink and regular lcd displays, trying to achieve a similar look to e-ink while not having the downside of slow refresh rate.

When I first saw the announcement, I had a feeling that it might be a reflective LCD. While using that tech itself isn't revolutionary, making it at such a high pixel density while maintaining contrast is impressive. The kindle-like frontlight layer is also a hell of a lot better than the one on my old Palm m515, where I first fell in love with the tech.
@mrgw98
@mrgw98 10 күн бұрын
I was thinking GameBoy and GameBoy Color, but PDAs are a great example too. It felt kind of weird for it to be touted as a new invention when it really is more of a refinement of a screen technology that has existed for decades now.
@ziginox
@ziginox 10 күн бұрын
@@mrgw98 oh yeah, same tech as the GBC, thankfully it seems more reflective than the original GBA! I still hold the m515 in high regard. In an era before the Kindle, I read many books on that device. The color was a bit washed out for sure, but it was at least sunlight-readable in an era where backlights were lacking.

Yeah. Reflective LCD is pretty nice, and while I personally much prefer e-ink (Mostly, because it feels more comfy to *me*, and low refresh rate is a non-issue), its always nice for other methods... of achieving such things, to be developed, and put out on the market. More choice, always nice.

Your alliteration will forever be legendary! I think you're one of the only KZbinrs that really puts thought, passion, and energy into their scripts. As a writer myself, I really think it's time to (if you haven't already) start putting together a book that chronicles your journey through tech over the last two decades and how it has impacted u not just technologically, but also socially, physically, mentally, and emotionally - that last one being an important point to highlight given your love for nostalgia in tech. It may start off as a passion project, but may very well become a bestseller!

LCDs used to refract sunlight. From a $7 Walmart watch to the Gameboy advance. There's no reason they can't keep doing that, and I'm really interested in seeing this technology appreciated enough to continue development.

To be fair, the game boy advance was fairly bad at reflecting light all things considered...
@m4t7eo
@m4t7eo 10 күн бұрын
Devices of old, with passive matrix displays did reflect light (that's why all the old Nokias had an always on display, showing time and notifications) but they had real bad contrast under passive light. Modern passive LCDs (like the one here, the ones in the Garmin Instinct series, some sport GShocks, the old Pebble, the Playdate) are in a whole other ballpark. As far as clarity and contrast go, I'd say they look like an eink from a few generations back.

Why does Michael Fisher only have 1.25 Million subscribers? He really should have WAY more, given he has the BEST written videos of any KZbinr on the planet. His like one of those introspective writers of television programs that are like documentaries. But done in such a way as to not be monotone like a lot of crappy documentaries, instead being a joy to watch and listen to. Just the right amount of passion and joy imbued to keep you awake and at the same time relaxed.

It's missing the LTE modem so much! The best use case for it is reading the web. Current e-ink tech doesn't do scrolling well, and no website is optimized for paged use. I read on my commute, be it blogs, news, books, or even reddit, and eink ebooks only do the book part well. Ofc, some color capability for the web wouldn't hurt. This could be *the* reading device.

As somene who lives in a sunny country but likes working outdoors, i do like this idea quite a lot. It doesnt match my personal use case, but i can easily see how it'll could be very useful to some

I'd love one for sketching. Regular sketchbooks are inconvenient for my current workflow, but, something slim and simple I can always pull out to draw, that can send instantly to my desktop is amazing Really need to try the pen myself though

Thank you for the mention of Onyx Boox tablets. Yes it's e-paper, so you don't get the smooth scrolling. But at least there's a history with Onyx as a company to know you'll get software support. I'd be shocked if Daylight lasts a full year. Assuming they actually ship.

I want this display on a low cost android tablet. Period. 60Hz in a 10" screen without eye strain is exactly what I need for reading PDFs and this technology delivers it.

The TCL mix paper does seem to be a solution given that it's relatively low cost and you can get it on phone

Yea the amber is beautiful, and on the price, definitely. It's fully custom display hardware and that is not even close to cheap so it's perfectly understandable.

Honestly this product does look quite appealing and that lightphone also looks fascinating. But I do agree that sometimes, unplugging from the endless online feeds is way harder to do than it is to say. While I don’t think I need a device like the DC-1 to help me achieve that, it’s a helpful reminder that we can control what we take in. Also I hope that beginning isn’t a foreshadowing to the future of the channel. Think I need to do another Mr. Mobile binge session🤔 in all seriousness, best to you, your kitties, and everything going on around you. I’d be sad to see you have to give up all of this.

Nothing better to combat the over reliance on gadgets of all sorts than to acquire a new expensive gadget, eh?

Huh. This turned out to be far deeper than a tablet review, and I agree with, well, everything you said. Keep taking care of yourself and your family Michael, best wishes to you all!

ooh. this sounds awesome. I love my Samsung Note tablets, especially for drawing, but this sounds great. I'd love to see this screen tech on a phone or smartwatch, too!

That screen is incredible and is exactly what I would want on a tablet device. Here's to hoping they can iron out the bugs and drop the price a bit.
