A while back I discovered an easy way to cut an Octagon block on a table saw, which I thought was pretty cool. I wanted to give it a try myself, so I grabbed some scrap wood and cut a block 2 1/2 "x 2 1/2"x 15". It worked great! Looking at the octagon block I thought it would be fun to try to cut an eight ring Celtic knot from this. I've made a lot of 4 ring Celtic knots projects before but never an 8 ring. I set up my 30 degree sled and cut a slot and filled each cut with 1/8" thick inserts on all eight sides of the octagon. I threw it on the lathe just to see how well every thing lined up and it turned out beautifully. Now it was time to do it for real, so glued up some nice walnut and milled it to a 2 1/2"x 2 1/2"x 15" block. Then cut it into an octagon block. The whole time I'm thinking, "what would be cool to make from this 8 ring Celtic knot octagon" .....A Pepper Grinder would be perfect!! So I cut all eight sides and inserted 3 different types of wood, Cherry, Maple and Bubinga. ( Maple, Purple Heart and Jarrah for the second one I decided to make). I decided to make two 8 ring Celtic knot pepper grinders because I had two of the ‪@crushgrind-letscrushboring314‬ mechanisms on hand, so why knot? When I finished with all the cuts and inserts I let them dry really well over night before putting them on the lathe. The next day I threw them on the lathe and made a couple of pepper grinders and man did they turn out well! Applied some O.B. shine juice and the Celtic knots just POPPED!!! Epoxied the Crushgrinds in place and all finished.
This was a really fun project and the results are really satisfying. So take your time and give it a shot and please as always Be Safe.......

I'd never heard of the trick to make a near perfect octagon before. I'll definitely have to try that. I do wish that you'd given the order of the three woods were inserted into the cuts. Thanks for a great video. - Chris

The taller one is Maple, Cherry and Bubinga. The order I used was 1-M, 2-B, 3-M, 4-C, 5-M,6-C,7-M,8-B. The small was Maple, purple heart and Jarrah same pattern. That Octagon trick makes it easy to create the block. Thanks👍🏻👍🏻

nicely done! i've done lots of 4 loop, and lots of 6 loop in both peppermills and pens. with small items like a pen, i do the kerf cuts on my bandsaw with a similar jig, stopping the cut before going all the way. a six loop requires a hexagonal blank of course.

It is not clear regarding the order you added the inserts. We’re three species used- 1,3,5,7 for the first, 2,4, 6,8 for the second, and 3, 5,7 1??

You can do whatever you want, I just try to keep the same species separated. Draw an octagon label where each species will go so you can keep track. Have fun. 👍👍

Still not clear regarding what you did in this video. So, 8 inserts - one on each side of the octagon. Is this the order? White, orange, brown/white, orange, brown/ white, orange?? Sorry for being so dense.

I believe I may have used four different types of wood. But if you have 3 I would go and going clockwise on the octagon 12321323 if you have 4 types go 12341234.
